About Virginia Beach Department of Human Services

The Virginia Beach Department of Human Services is located just off of Hwy 58 and Jersey Avenue on Witchduck Rd. in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This facility offers a combination of behavioral health, developmental, financial and social services to members of the local community who are struggling with mental health issues, substance use or intellectual disorders.

Their core values indicate appreciation for community feedback, consumer choice, continuous improvement and family and youth opportunities. They work to increase public awareness of the issues and needs of the disabled and focus their resources on programs and services not offered by other organizations. What stands out to be about their services is that professional and ethical practices have been put in place to ensure all residents of Virginia Beach have equal access to the benefits provided.

They offer multiple services to address various aspects of behavioral health. These include adult correctional services, wellness and prevention services and child and youth behavioral services. They also provide crisis response, community corrections and pretrial services. Their State Opioid Response (SOR) program provides unique interventions for opioid related addiction.

Their developmental services include case management to develop person centered treatment. Their early intervention program helps children with speech, physical or occupational therapy. A SkillQuest Day Support program assists those 21 or older to achieve goals such as socialization, communication and independent living skills. An SLP (Supportive Living Program) is also available.

All aspects of their services are licensed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. I find this reassuring to know their programs must meet the standards to achieve this status.

This facility seems to offer a comprehensive and successful array of services to support members of the Virginia Beach community. You’ll find support for your mental health, sobriety and community integration.

Hello Mrs Turner Hamlin,It's me Wanda C. Mrs Turner Hamlin, At first I didn't understand why my assistance was cut off. But after getting in touch with your agency, I didn't know that I was about to be challenged, so that my insurance could be reinstated. The ongoing need for MORE information, started to affect me mentally, and physically. I had no CNA, no transportation to my doctor's appointments, No medication therefore left me totally and completely spiraling out of control. I spiraled so hard that I became incoherent to friend and family. . Nothing was making sense to me, but I was in a unstable mind, due to lack of medication. This had to be solved!!! I'd even reached out to my workers supervisor , but never heard back from Mr Gillum. Lack of my Medicaid reinstated, I struggled a unbelievable close to death experience, that don't ever want to visit AGAIN. After countless phone calls, Mrs Hamlin, was able to reinstate my coverage, I was completely overwhelmed, and want to Thank her, for working and not jeopardizingjob, which I appreciate. Thank you Mrs Turner Hamlin, for working on my reinstatement!!!! I appreciate the staff at the Department of Social services. And a special shout-out to Mrs Turner Hamlin for making it happen.P.S. Thanks again for helping me! I can't say it enough, how truly GREATFUL I am.

Accepted Insurance

Virginia Beach Department of Human Services works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you enroll in drug rehab in Virginia, a treatment plan is designed by professional staff in order to help you overcome drug addiction and modify addictive behaviors. This may include evidence-based treatments, group and individual therapy, and relapse prevention.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

This place is an insult to their name. They really don t care about anyone except themselves. They dodge calls, lie over the phone when you get them, never return calls and sometimes all they have to do it click one button on a mouse and can t even do that for almost 6 months. You will lose your snap, your insurance will lapse and your patience will expire if you have to rely on this office for anything.Go to the headquarters and over their heads if you need answers. We contacted our congress person and state delegate about this office and encourage everyone with a legitimate issue to do the same. Going through the proper channels does nothing so don t be afraid to jump over heads.

I have a case worker that has never once answered the phone in three years. Also been calling consistently for months and still no answer. Doesn't even answer the emergency line.I hope M.King sees this.

Miss Haigler is my case worker. And to be honest she is a complete ray of sunshine and is a God send. She has been working all day on my SNAP renewal. After countess computer errors, clerical issues, and phone and email tag, she is still pushing through with the upmost positivity and encouragement. I have 4 children, so this extra money for food is so critical. she is such a blessing to me, and she should be noticed and praised for her continual hard work. Thank you, as well, to her Supervisor, Miss Brown. You both make a great team! God bless you both

I have nothing good at all to say about them. Ms. L White is a bold face liar. My wife and I are classified as below poverty as I am sure a lot of us are... When had a baby boy little over a year ago. She was assigned to our case. WHAT A MISTAKE THAT WAS. She doesn't care at all about what you have to say. She hangs up on you and refuses to keep her promises. I have made countless reports against her and yet her supervisor has her back every time. After just finishing our renewal and being able to continue our benefits this lady sends me a letter telling me that she is cutting us off of our benefits. When I asked why her reply was I'm not going to assist you. When I stated the fact that she is being prejudiced and that just because I am not a minority doesn't give her the right to do what she did. When I called her out for unprofessional she told me that she doesn't care that my family is now going to lose everything she simply said oh well not my problem and I can be prejudiced against you because I don't know anything about you. I replied you have been my case worker for a year you sign off on my paperwork and you don't know anything. Your looking at my case now. Hate them so much they are useless unless you are a minority and that is a proven fact.
