About Rivendell Behavioral Health Services of Kentucky

Located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Rivendell Behavioral Health Hospital treats substance use and co-occurring mental health disorders. They offer inpatient and outpatient programs for children, adolescents and adults. The children’s programs are for mental health only while the adolescent and adult programs focus on substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorders. The facility accepts most commercial insurance including TRICARE. They also accept Medicaid and Medicare.

The adolescent inpatient program is a psychiatric program for teens in crisis. This includes suicidal thoughts, inappropriate sexual behavior, depression, runaway behavior, thoughts of hurting other people, mood swings and substance use. After a psychiatric assessment, therapists work with your teen to identify the underlying issues leading to the problematic behavior.

Therapists use dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), individual and group therapy to teach teens the coping skills they need to avoid negative behaviors. Teens work with a nurse, psychiatrist, dietician, and other health professionals while in the program.

The facility offers inpatient, medical detox for adults 18 and up. You’ll have a private room for detox with a nurse monitoring you around the clock. You’ll have medication to assist you through the most uncomfortable symptoms of withdrawal.

When you’re through detox, you’ll see a psychiatrist to determine if a co-occurring mental health disorder is contributing to your substance use. Co-occurring disorders can include depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. If necessary, the psychiatrist will prescribe medications to help stabilize your mental health. The length of the inpatient program varies depending on the individual. After your inpatient stay, you can move to the partial hospitalization program (PHP) for further support.

The PHP meets Monday through Friday with therapy beginning at 8:30 a.m. You’ll have lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and then meet for more therapy. Most people stay in the PHP for about a month but that varies based on individual needs.

There’s also an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adults with substance use disorder who don’t need inpatient treatment but need more than regular counseling. The IOP is a Monday through Friday program. You’ll have therapy from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Clients typically stay in this program for six to eight weeks.

NEVER GO HERE! This is an awful place. My best friend went here twice and both times she went the staff just made her want to kill herself more, they treated her like a prisoner and didn't even provide her with the necessities for good hygiene and the other patients in there were awful and rude. She hasn't been there in a few years but she still has bad mental health and won't talk to her parents about it because she's afraid she will have to go back here. PLEASE never send anyone you care about here if you want them to get better.

Accepted Insurance

Rivendell Behavioral Health Services of Kentucky works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
Participants in 12 step programs attend regular group meetings, which are free, anonymous, and open to the public. Most communities offer multiple meetings daily, with specialized formats, including programs for seniors, teens, and families, widely available. 12 step recovery prioritizes participants' spiritual, emotional, and psychological growth and healing to support their sustained sobriety. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring from a self-selected sponsor as they work through the 12 steps of recovery.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Often beneficial for individuals who don't require 24-hour supervision, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) can be an alternative to inpatient rehab or a transitional option. PHP treatment typically involves 6 to 8 hours of treatment per day, up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. PHP treatment often includes relapse prevention strategies, medication management, and other behavioral therapy interventions. While the cost of a partial hospitalization program can vary, it is often covered by insurance.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medical detox is the process of weaning your body off addictive substances in a medically supervised environment. An on-site medical team may include physicians, nurses, therapists, and other clinical staff whose job it is to monitor your vitals and provide medications if necessary to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Their goal is to keep you as safe and comfortable as possible throughout the process.. Medically assisted detox programs are individualized to meet your specific needs and can vary in length, but they tend to last 5-7 days.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Kentucky often starts with detox, then includes inpatient or outpatient treatment, and continues with aftercare support. Specific methods used during each of these phases varies, but often include individual and group counseling, medication, and recreational therapies.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Went here back in october 2022 and wholeheartedly don t recommend this place. They were too strict, didn t have privacy at all, kinda terrible when doing blood work, and honestly miserable. There was only a curtain over the bathroom entrance. You was only ever allowed to be by yourself when you was in the bathroom because one, you all had to follow the same routine everyday which was mostly in the same room, while, two, they d constantly shine flashlights at you and your roommate when sleeping which wasn t very pleasing also considering the fact the bed was as hard as a rock, the pillow was flat and the blanket felt like a thin towel while it being cold. Not much accessibility (small comb and hygeine- and i understand that- but jesus, not very good female hygiene products, etc.)They attempted to draw my blood multiple times and never could until the day right before i left. The woman that was actually able to get my blood told me she didn t like the other side of the building doing it because they aren t good at it.You was only allowed to call a family member for five minutes every night at a certain time and they was only allowed to visit one day.and etc prob

They treat patients like prisoners, put ankle bracelets on them to track their every move. Took my grand daughter over a week to get medication she was prescribed for a rash that she broke out with while there. Told her it was something else then what it really was. Had it almost 4 weeks. Staff members are rude to the patients. They would tell her she isn t in rehab she is in a mental facility. They told my grand daughter she is under weight but they never weighed her except when she got there. That s the thing, she has always maintained the weight she went in with. Boys and girls are allowed to mingle . This place isn t about helping patients, it s about money. My insurance denied her stay because she didn t need to be there so between cps and a doctor there, they got her on Medicaid to pay for it but still tried to bill my insurance. If you have insurance when you get there and you lose it then they put you out, if a rehab really cared about the patients and not the money, why would they not let them finish their treatment, that tells you something right now and I didn t have a choice in my grand daughter being there because that is the last place I would put her. She goes in not needing anything to sleep with now she feels she needs sleeping pills., has nightmares of being there. They shine flashlights in your face every 15 minutes when your sleeping. By looking at the reviews I don t see how they are open oh wait forgot it s all about money and politics. Not the people

When I first arrived, I wasn t for sure if I made the right decision, but after talking to the staff and seeing how proactive they were, I believe this was the right decision. Yes, they are strict but this is not a vacation. This is a place to help with coping skills, speak to therapists, regulate medication, and not do self harm to your self. If you keep an open mind and take in what they teach, then you will realize this is to help and understand why you are going down a path of destruction.

My first time at Rivendell , I couldn t fully see the help they were offering. I wasn t ready and left, going back out to face more pain. But after each return, I realized the problem wasn t with Rivendell it was with me not being ready. Each time I came back, I saw more clearly how much they cared and how they were trying to help me all along. The staff is supportive, and the experience improved as I opened my eyes to it. Now, after six visits and three years of sobriety, I can honestly say they played a huge role in saving my life.

Terrible terrible place. I admitted myself in order to detox off of a terrible alcohol binge mostly stemmed because of depression. They denied my medication which my PCP had prescribed that kept my seizures under control for years. Started giving me pills I had never taken after telling them I was susceptible to side effects. After 2 days I told them it wasn't a healthy place for me and I wanted to discharge. They wouldn't allow me to starting that the Dr would just put me on a 72 hour hold. Well..2 days later I had the worst seizure in years, fell, cracked my head open and taken to the ER. After being returned to the center they kept trying to give me the same pills starting that if I didn't take them they would put it in the report and the Dr would place a hold on me. I went in at my lowest and came out worse. Plus one of the "counselors' would literally tell and scream and threaten the patients because the kitchen had an ant infestation. Like really yell at the patients. Horrible horrible place. Terrible unhealthy place to be. Do not go there for help. They will harm you.
