About Paradise Valley Hospital

Paradise Valley Hospital, located in National City, California, is a behavioral health care center that provides inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient treatment to adults seeking behavioral health care support. If a person is struggling with addiction, they may need to be referred to a drug rehab center depending on the severity of their condition.

The inpatient program provides 24/7 supervision and access to medical care. A mind, body, and spirit approach is taken to support individuals at the beginning stages of treatment. Individual therapy, group therapy, case management services, and psychoeducational classes on topics related to addiction and recovery are provided.

The partial hospitalization program meets Monday through Friday during the daytime hours, allowing individuals to return to their home environment during the evening. Relapse prevention, skill-building classes, and trauma-informed treatment are provided.

The intensive outpatient program meets three times a week for three hours at a time. Classes on life transitions, interpersonal communication, stress management, symptom control, the role of trauma in addiction, and traditional drug education are provided.

Paradise Valley Hospital accepts most major medical insurance plans, including Ambetter, Humana, Beacon, and more. Out-of-network benefits may vary from plan to plan.

Upon arriving to Paradise Valley hospital, I was received with very kind people. The gentleman who checked me in, the gentleman who took my insurance information the first nurse that asked me why I was there, and the doctor. They were all so kind and attentive. I just had a huge problem with one of the nurses. Christina, the RN. When I was taken to the room, I dozed off while waiting for someone to come in and see me. I waited for about 30 minutes before the nurse (Christina) arrived. She startled me and I began to cough. White eye and upset, she said, can you cover your mouth? I said, yes of course. she then asked me, has anybody taken a flu or a Covid test? to which I responded, no I don t have any of those. I just came here because I have an ear pain and most likely an ear infection. she said, I m gonna need to take a flu and Covid test. I said, no and only because my ears really hurts. Can you please check my ear? as she started walking off, she said, no. I m not a doctor! I waited for about an hour before I asked another nurse when I would see a doctor. As he was checking the computer, I saw his eyes get wide open and then he said, just a minute I ll see what s going on. Shortly after the doctor arrived, he checked my ear and said, yes you do have an ear infection. I m assuming it s pain painful would you like some medication? I said, yes please. About 30 minutes later, Cristina RN came back into the room. She demanded, you need to take your sweater off. I proceeded to remove my sweater and then she said, this is a Toradol shot. It s gonna go in your arm well done your shirt. I noticed that she didn t have anything but the injection. I asked her, aren t you going to clean it? she said, clean what? I said, my arm. You guys usually use a cotton swab with alcohol to clean the area. Christina rolled her eyes and walked out the room with the syringe wide open. I saw her go into another room and when she came back, she had a cotton swab. She proceeded to pull down my shirt and I said, wait. Why are you doing that? She said, I m going to give you your shot! I said, why are you treating me like this? What did I do to you? She said, I m not doing anything! I said, yes you are since I got here you ve been having a huge attitude with me and I don t understand why. Now you re trying to pull down my shirt without my consent and I can clearly tell you re upset, but I don t understand why. She then said, I m gonna get you another nurse . I said, yes please and also could you give me your name? She smiled and said, I m not gonna give you my name. I explained all of this to the charge nurse and the doctor. The charge nurse said that the Toradol shot was very painful.I now realize that Christina s lack of information was on purpose. I realize she was upset and just wanted to give me a painful shot without any prior notice. I was extremely disrespected and discriminated by her. She was mad at me for something I didn t even know I did. Was it because of my insurance type or maybe I m Mexican? Or was it because she was working night shift or on christmas? Her attitude made me uncomfortable. It concerns me that if I would ve not said anything, maybe her malpractice would ve caused other issues such as an undesired infection. I worry that she is treating others this way too. I hope something is done about this.

Accepted Insurance

Paradise Valley Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an outpatient rehab typically do not require hospitalization or intensive supervision and support. Outpatient addiction counseling and recovery education are often offered during the morning, evening, night, and weekend, allowing clients to tailor treatment to their own schedule. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) programs are the most time-intensive and are designed for clients who are at an increased relapse risk and/or who need more robust therapeutic support.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab provides intensive treatment for clients exiting detox, those in early recovery, and those at an elevated risk of relapse. Unlike outpatient drug rehab, clients receiving inpatient care reside at the facility for the duration of the program. The length of stay may range from two weeks to 18 months or more, depending on the client's needs and the program's design. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober living homes in California offers an intermediate sober environment that has less structure than inpatient rehab but more than typical home environments. This makes it a good option for those who have concerns about transitioning back to the "real world" after treatment. Residents can typically live at the halfway house as long as they want, if they are willing to follow house rules. These may include a curfew, chores, and maintaining a job.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

While participating in dialectical behavior therapy in California, you'll focus on four key areas of skill development: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance. Treatment includes weekly individual and group sessions.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

I had exceptional care from the ED visit, OR nurses, surgeon, anesthesiologist to the nurses on the unit. An ambulance took me to sharp grossmont first and I was ignored for 2 hours while laying on the ground in excruciating pain. I left AMA to go to Paradise Valley Hosptial.

Response from the owner3 weeks ago
We appreciate your thoughtful recognition. It is our honor to provide quality care.

This was the worse hospital by far I ve ever been in if you re not Filipino, the nurses could care less about you. They speak about you in Tagalog, but it ll do. They know some of us to understand it. They think they are better than everybody else because they are nurses they leave you following in your own filth and the housekeepers end up doing their job not a single doctor visits you and let you know what the plan is for your stay. This is by far the worst hospital in San Diego if I could give it a minus star I would, but especially all the nurses on the sixth floor should all resign and be ashamed of yourselves. There is two exceptions to the staff on the sixth floor being Maria Solorio, which was a housekeeper on the floor not even a Nurse on the floor that was more tentative to all the patients on the floor even if the room wasn t hers to clean, she was more tentative than the whole staff my hat off to this woman Who was one of the two women who were the only ones who were tentative to me the other one was a nurse at night I didn t catch your name. She was real young and also very tentative. I wish I knew her name so I can give her props on here. God bless you two and your families. The rest of you should be ashamed of yourself as you too could be in this position one day and I hope you get treated the same You treat your Patients Maybe your whole perspective or outlook on your job would change. I wonder if this hospital even does reviews on their nurses which they should because none of them should have their title.

Not good my wife made it out of there but we will never go backWe were traveling threw national city my wife had stomach issues end up calling 911 The ambulance driver recommended the hospital. They took her to Is paradise valley hospital Into the emergency I went in to sign in They told me they would let me in as soon as she had a room My wife struggles with communication , I told him that I told them I needed to be back there. They told me just a minute when she gets a room She got a room and they wouldn't let me back there The information that she gave him wasn't quite right So after they did let me in about an hour later I was able to clear up. Is keeping you from a loved one in the emergency Just.Doesn't seem right. The place is pretty old hospital. I would not recommended and the staff. We're not that friendly. However, my wife did get a good nurse.
