About Pace Recovery Center

Pace Recovery Center in Costa Mesa, California, is an organization that has provided addiction treatment for men since 2012. Clients have access to mental health services that help them recognize the root cause of their substance abuse. They apply evidence based therapies to treat mental health conditions that contribute to addiction, such as trauma, anxiety and bipolar disorder. The staff members also educate their clients on life skills and achieving educational and vocational goals. Pace Recovery Center strives to create an environment that’s safe and supportive to allow men to create their own identities. Along with evidence based treatments, the organization also utilizes holistic therapies to help with recovery.

I like that this organization offers treatment for a wide range of substances, including alcohol, opiates, club drugs and amphetamines. They also have expertise in treating individuals dealing with dual diagnosis. Clients will receive their treatment from certified drug and alcohol counselors as well as doctoral and master’s level therapists. The types of therapeutic approaches used include cognitive behavioral therapy, attachment based therapy and eye movement desensitization and reprocessing.

The facility has patients participate in group meetings and one on one therapy sessions, and they also try to involve families in the recovery process. Clients will gain knowledge of symptom management techniques and relapse prevention tools. Additionally, clients will learn solutions for common relationship problems and social issues.

Pace Recovery Center also offers an intensive outpatient program (IOP) where clients attend nightly group therapy sessions and weekly one on one sessions. It’s an ideal treatment option for patients who’ve already detoxed and have achieved mental and physical stability.

I am an alumni of PACE from back in 2015. I have since opened my own center in Austin, TX - Heartwood Recovery. PACE is truly the first place where I experienced fun in recovery. Though I wasn t quite ready and had a slip after my time there before getting and staying sober, I learned many valuable lessons at PACE. Lenny is a fantastic individual and has created a model that works. Key staff who I learned from and who are still there are Will, Dr. Jeanie, Sean, Brian, Chris, etc. All fantastic individuals. Can t say enough good things, highly recommend! - Frank Schmitt

Location

Accepted Insurance

Pace Recovery Center works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Our son enrolled at PACE in 2023 with severe mental health and addiction issues. While the process was very difficult for all of us, our son graduated from the program after 90 days, a different person. He's now back at school and transitioning well. Thoroughout the entire process, the PACE team was communicative and supportive. We can't begin to thank the entire team for helping our son!

I recently had an extremely disappointing experience at Pace Recovery Center, and I feel compelled to share my negative review. It is evident that this facility prioritizes money over genuinely helping patients recover from their addictions. From the moment I stepped foot into Pace Recovery Center, I noticed a disturbing trend. The staff seemed more focused on billing and financial matters than providing the necessary care and support for individuals struggling with addiction. It became apparent that their primary concern was maximizing profits rather than ensuring patients' well-being.Throughout my stay, it became increasingly clear that the staff lacked genuine empathy and compassion for the patients. Instead of fostering a supportive environment conducive to recovery, the staff members seemed disinterested and detached. Their lack of investment in the patients' well-being was evident in their rushed interactions and minimal effort to provide personalized care.Furthermore, the treatment plans at Pace Recovery Center appeared to be cookie-cutter approaches, designed to keep patients in the program for as long as possible. It seemed as though the main goal was to prolong treatment, in turn maximizing revenue for the facility. Each session felt like a mere checkbox exercise, with little emphasis on addressing individual needs or tailoring treatment plans accordingly. Moreover, the facility's focus on profits was evident in their highly inflated prices. The exorbitant fees charged for the services provided were simply unjustifiable. It felt as though patients were being taken advantage of during a vulnerable time in their lives, with the primary motivation being financial gain rather than genuine care and support.Overall, my experience at Pace Recovery Center was disheartening and discouraging. It is clear that the facility's priorities lie in monetary gain rather than helping patients recover from their addictions. The lack of genuine care, empathy, and personalized treatment plans only further solidify this observation. I would strongly advise anyone seeking addiction treatment to explore alternative options that prioritize the well-being of their patients rather than their own financial interests. Also while at pace, mike Tsao was the the lead residence manager of my house, however he constantly abused the power he had over the essentially powerless clients he was supposed to be caring for . During my time there, the most striking example was when I was in the privacy of my own room. I was completely nude as I had just got out of the shower and had the door completely closed. But pace removed all locks to every door. I heard Mr. Tsao knock at the door, I immediately screamed for him to not enter. However, Mr. Tsao was not phased, and entered regardless. He had realized my nude state and instead of leaving the room he stared at me for over 5 very long seconds. I yelled countless times for him to leave but only after the fourth or fifth time he left the room. I had never felt so violated in my life. I was overcome with anger and disgust. After contemplating what had just transpired, I confronted Mr. Tsao. Instead of apologizing profusely, he laughed it off as he knew the power he held over my and there was nothing I could do about it. I was in disbelief and was disturbed beyond belief. I seriously considered calling the police but was petrified of what pace would ve done to me. I felt there was nothing I could do. Mike tsao violated me in ways I have never experienced in my life. I have no idea how many patients experienced mr. Tsao s disgusting violations of privacy but feel I am not alone. I hope future people in need realize how powerless pace makes their clients feel and that they could take advantage of them of them at anytime. I really hope Mr. Tsao will be held responsible but I doubt it. All I can do now is share my story and hope more people never experience what I did.

PACE has been very helpful and offers great programs for mental health & substance abuse/addiction recovery. Everyone who works there is very kind and is committed to helping you out with your needs. Cameron D., the outpatient case manager, has been amazing to work with he goes above and beyond for all of his clients and makes sure that they re getting everything they need to succeed. He has definitely been the highlight of my experience, and I could not be more appreciative of all the work that he does. Overall, PACE has been a great experience, and I would recommend it to others.

My son has been at PACE since February 2023 and I am completely amazed by the recovery and growth I have seen in him. The culture that the team creates is so supportive. There are many staff that have helped contribute to his growth, but wanted to give a special shoutout to the following staff: Outpatient case manager, Cameron Danna - thank you for helping my son get a job, life skills, back working with a sponsor and acceptance into college!! Rita Yacoub, his lead therapist has made great strides helping my son work through past traumas and working on life and coping skills. Alexi Farmer was his inpatient case manager and was so caring in his guidance when my son was going through some of his darkest hours, and helping him to be able to be independent in an outpatient sober living home. I will forever be grateful to the quality of care my son has received.

I contacted PACE about a year ago when my son was going through some serious struggles. We had been through a number of facilities with him without a lot of improvement in his functioning. PACE was perfect for us because they have an all encompassing approach to treat mental health treatment as well as addiction issues with equal expertise. From the moment we called, we were treated with kindness and professionalism. Now, it is a year later and our son is celebrating his recovery anniversary. In addition, his mental heath is no longer a struggle for him and he is settling in to the life he always wanted. A huge thank you to clinical director Will and his team for their continued support.

My son spent 60 days at PACE and the experience was life changing. The staff, especially his case manager, Cameron D, truly cares about the patients and take special interest in their success. Cameron D contacted me weekly to give me updates on my son and worked closely with him in defining and achieving his goals. Cameron D has a passion for recovery that is infectious and we are thankful God put him in our life. Cameron's care for my son went above and beyond anything we could have ever asked for.I would also like to thank Joseph G who also worked closely with my son and further impacted our lives for the better.

3 years ago, I had zero hope for a better future and had completely given up on my life, passions, and dreams. Depression and addiction controlled my life for the entire decade prior to going to Pace in 2020. I'd been to many treatment centers beforehand to no availl. Pace is the only program that gave me long-term success in my recovery. Unlike other treatment centers where you are in and out within 30 to 90 days, Pace takes a long term and steady approach with a community that's unmatched. I received hands-on help from my case managers, therapists, and psychiatrists whenever I needed it. I could tell that these people actually cared. I spent 3 months in Pace's inpatient program, and another 9 months in Pace's outpatient program. Upon leaving Pace, the team helped me build a sustainable recovery plan that I still go by to this day. By sticking to this plan, and doing as directed while in the program, I have gained my life back. I'm passionate about so many things now including work, school, surfing and more. I no longer struggle with depression, and I have a community of people I can call on if I ever need help. I can't thank Pace, Lenny, Brian G, and Alexi enough for believing in me and giving me my life back. Without them, I'm unsure that I would be here typing this today. Thanks guys!

I have been actively involved in the addiction and mental health field for the past nine years, diligently working and referring clients to Pace throughout this time. When it comes to programs specifically designed for young adult men, Pace is one of my top choices. The sense of community they have cultivated at Pace is truly unparalleled. I have yet to witness such a supportive and uplifting environment elsewhere. Their clinical staff, without fail, have always exhibited a high level of professionalism and genuine care towards their clients. Even in cases that seemed utterly hopeless, I have witnessed remarkable transformations when individuals were admitted to Pace. The program's ability to build a strong, nurturing community around these individuals has proven to be instrumental in their journey towards recovery and personal growth. Such is my confidence in the quality of care provided by Pace that I wholeheartedly recommend this facility to my own family and close friends. It is a testament to their unwavering commitment to excellence in helping individuals overcome addiction and mental health challenges.
