About U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Domiciliary Care Program

Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans Program, located in Anchorage, Alaska, provides mental health and drug rehab programs for those who need support with mental illness, dual diagnosis, addiction, co-morbid medical conditions, and psychosocial defects.

Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans Program offers residential rehab services.

The residential treatment program at Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans is for those who need a high level of structure and support at the beginning phase of their recovery journey. This program is for Veterans only and is best suited for those who are dealing with mental health, addiction, or other issues causing normal functioning to become difficult. They emphasize clinical treatment, self care, and personal responsibility. The intensity of treatment is dependent on who is receiving the treatment, their personal needs and goals, their age, and the condition being treated.

Individual therapy creates the space to explore the psychological challenges associated with the addiction. With the help of a professional, individuals are given the space and direction to talk about and process their emotions. Often this includes unresolved trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, and the need for more control or autonomy in life.

Dual Diagnosis, often referred to as having co-occurring disorders, is when two or more mental health concerns present themselves simultaneously. It is very common for those who struggle with addiction to also have an underlying mental health concern such as anxiety, depression, or a diagnosable psychiatric disorder. Without proper treatment of the mental health issue at hand, getting and staying sober can be difficult. By treating both the substance use disorder and the mental health needs concurrently, a greater chance for long term sobriety is achieved.

Trauma is often a root cause of addiction, changing the brain and biochemistry. Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents through scientifically proven and evidence based treatment methods that help target the nervous system’s processing centers, which help to create balance mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery in a highly structured and supportive environment. Housing, meals, and recreational activities are provided. Inpatient treatment allows clients to engage in extensive addiction counseling and recovery education. The environment also provides clients with an opportunity to prepare for the transition to outpatient care or community-based recovery programs.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Levels of care like medical detox provide 24-hour clinical care in Alaska. During this time, you can access medical staff and personnel on a 24/7 basis to provide safe stabilization from alcohol or drugs. After detox is complete, you'll move on to the next phase of treatment, which may or may not require round the clock supervision.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

During drug rehab in Alaska, you'll receive a combination of medical and psychotherapeutic treatments that are designed to treat drug dependency. The goal of drug rehab is to break this dependency and help you develop the skills to maintain a drug-free life.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. I did my lab work and then I seen the dentist. It took some time of about 5 hours. But I'm glad to do it.

The VA Domiciliary is a place for veterans to recover from homelessness, mental health issues, and addictions. Typical stays in this residential rehabilitation program range from 28 days to 6 months, but may be longer based on an individual needs. This a place for healing. A wide range of staff are here to assist veterans...nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, addiction specialists, peer support, financial specialists, housing program specialists and recreational specialists. Classes are held daily to help veterans gain the skills to live and work independently while maintaining a sober lifestyle. Recovery is possible and this place provides you with the care needed to believe in yourself again.

Mediocrity comes to mind. Not the worst ever, but don't expect much from any place that has the VA emblem on it. I asked for help there and they made the supposition that it was court ordered.

I was there for 6 months, told to leave and forced to leave due to "insurance reasons" after a joint replacement on my right hand. I pleaded not to leave, staff not respectful, and bias, boarder line racists. If they like you you are fine if not then you have Nothing coming. I completed ALL courses, yet the DOM denied me a certificate of completion. Very disappointed with staff, and how they treated me and my family. They lied to me and continue to deny me, even being homeless, and needing mental health help, still denied.
