About Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health

Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health is in Savannah, Georgia. It’s a behavioral care facility that offers substance use recovery services and care for psychiatric conditions for adults. Substance use recovery services that are available include inpatient (IP) and outpatient (OP) care. They’re accredited by The Joint Commission.

Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health will provide assessments to clients at no cost. The clinician reports the findings of the assessments to a psychiatrist to determine proper treatment, and the treatment recommendations are provided to the client. The facility generally starts patient treatment with medically supervised detox under the care of medical and nursing staff.

What stands out about this location is its various inpatient treatment services. Clients can receive educational group therapy, substance abuse education, and psycho educational groups. Group therapy is helpful to clients because they’re able to practice recovery strategies in a supportive environment. They can also gain knowledge of healthy coping skills from their peers.

The therapeutic approaches used on patients include dialectical and cognitive behavior therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help clients to dismiss insecurities that cause them to use substances, and self help tools to better manage their moods. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) can help patients address underlying trauma that may be causing addiction.

Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health also gives patients an opportunity to participate in various activities that can promote wellness. Participation is optional, but some of the activities available include animal assisted therapy, yoga, and weekend cookouts.

An additional service offered at this location is discharge planning. Discharge planning involves staff coming up with treatment options that will be continued and who will provide support to the patient. The goal of the plan is to help the client continue to maintain sobriety after recovery.

First off, I would like to thank the staff for all their effort in my treatment plans and helping me to get better. It was an eye opening experience. I was fortunate to also have made new friendships with some amazing folks who also has their own story. Just remember you are not alone. This place can really help if you truly embrace the treatment plans. I realized the ones who gave this place a negative review are the ones who fought their treatment plans and demanded to go home before they were ready to be cured. That being said, I especially want to thank a few staff members that went above and beyond for me, Miss Lisa, you my girl thank you for ALWAYS looking out for me! Miss Erika, many blessings to you for sharing your story it was heartfelt, Miss Nicole I hope you had fun at your concert and keep smiling, and Miss Ashton you have been such a delight and very entertaining. Thank you Big Mike the cook for the yummy alternatives when we did not agree with main meals. You all saved my life.I can't thank you enough. And I hope you enjoyed the crossword books I donated to the transitions wing.Always,Sherrie

The best part of my time at Coastal has been the staff. Some names - not all who've afforded me compassion, respect, and dignity, but many of them, include: Nicholas B, nurses Val and Rebecca, Sebastian, the kind and gracious Nikki, the quiet and patient Ashton, Joe; these are only a few of the names who made my stay palatable and comfortable. The nurses, to whom all my respect and appreciation are due, always reciprocated my respect with patience and understanding. The floor techs, were always encouraging and never degrading or short with me. They encouraged my recovery in any ways that were permissible, including helping me get material to work on a fourth step, reading material for entertainment, and always put clients immediate needs ahead of any paperwork in front of them. They would listen if I needed a quick ear, and they understood that people have sick days, and days not so easily conquered through adversity. I can't say enough how respect was everything in my stay, and a big boost to my personal self esteem has been that for once truly, where I gave respect I perceptively received it. Nonetheless, even those who who suffered and needed to shout received warm responses and all the compassion one might ask for, and more than I could've offered in patience and understanding. The facilities are not perfect, but the cleanliness of the dorm and it's smooth operation has as much to due with a clients willingness to give back or even surrender to the treatment, as anything else. I went in lacerated and demoralized, and they quickly found me the treatment for not only my physical wounds, but a great number of the holes in my spiritual dilapidation. I haven't read anybody else's reviews. I can honestly say, from my perspective, this was any opportunity where I was offered treatment and consolation, and the more I gave, the more I received. I am forever grateful and, as an adult, I can see the humanity and patience in their efforts. The food was great, only one or two meals came cold due to difficulty in staff, but people are human. I have little to say of the psychiatric doctors, but not negatively, they are probably understaffed in that regard, but I'm only speculating. The nurses had gentle hands and kind eyes, warm smiles and helpful souls. I recommend this facility for anyone needing time away, or experiencing a crisis. The fifth star I reserve for perfection, and I've never given a five star reviews. Nevertheless, these four stars indicate the best mental health stay Ive ever had, and I've had a lot.

Terrible, terrible, terrible! If you weren t depressed before going you will be when inside. They have it setup to cause you to be the most uncomfortable possible, it s already uncomfortable that you have to go through a place like this. The floors were never cleaned while I was here making then sticky and gross. I requested my shared shower be cleaned and that never happened. At intake they took most of my clothes from me and a rubber wedding ring I wear in place of my real one. Yet others were wearing there actual rings and clothes that were worse than mine were. Some of the staff are very friendly and truly concerned about the wellbeing of everyone.I would like to acknowledge Taylor the evening lead tech & Garret one of the floating techs that came to our wing & The daytime Charge nurse that worked the weekend. (I hate that I can t remember her name). Anyway all three of them showed compassion, listening, and understanding. I truly appreciate that hence even a star rating. This place was unbearable and gave off a facade to family members checking in at the front desk. The kitchen/cafeteria were disgusting, the tables and floor were so sticky and dirty it made you not want to eat. But if you didn t eat they keep you longer. I did all I could to get out of this place ASAP. The only coping skill taught was when Garret went through a 4,7,5 breathing method. They tried to discuss sleep being important but wouldn t give us enough sleep. We would be woken up throughout the night and not able to go in our rooms til 11pm often then to be woken abruptly at 5 am just to sit in the common area for hours waiting on med pass. Oh lord, don t let them change your meds or they keep you longer.

Accepted Insurance

Coastal Harbor Behavioral Health works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
The adult psychiatric inpatient program provides intensive 24-hour support in a secure setting for patients 18 and older with ongoing psychiatric and substance abuse problems. After resolving the immediate crisis after admission, their experienced team of psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists develop a highly individualized treatment plan while taking care to insure the safety of the patient within the hospital setting.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a half-day program incorporating the same treatment components as PHP for individuals that need more assistance than weekly counseling sessions can provide but do not require the intensity or structure of a full-day program. For patients with chronic psychiatric conditions and/or substance abuse, the IOP format is ideal.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Their outpatient services are designed to offer help to those seeking solutions to their psychiatric or emotional issues as well as to those living with substance abuse problems. Each program provides a comprehensive array of therapeutic activities for those individuals that need more intervention that weekly outpatient sessions can provide but that are not in need of hospitalization.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Designed for individuals who don't require round-the-clock care, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a form of outpatient care with a higher level of support. PHP treatment can be an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down option. With daily sessions lasting 6 to 8 hours, up to 5 days a week, a partial hospitalization program may offer medication management, relapse prevention techniques, and behavioral therapy interventions. PHP treatment can be fully or partially covered by insurance.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

A quality drug rehab in Georgia can help you overcome addiction. This environment is designed to help you address the complex issues contributing to drug dependence. The goal of treatment is to give you the tools you need to make a full recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Open Beds
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Animal therapy (aka pet therapy or animal-assisted therapy) can be very healing, as it allows patients to bond with animals, who give unconditional love. This is particularly useful for those who suffered trauma by the hands of people, who may be able to trust and form closer attachments to animals than humans at certain stages of rehabilitation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

By incorporating recreational therapy into an addiction treatment program in Georgia, you learn to discover new interests and develop health and healthy coping mechanisms. Activities could include painting, group sports, or yoga. These encourage social interaction and support your physical fitness, which are vital factors in a successful recovery journey.

Only giving 2 stars bc there was SOME staff that did actually care about my well-being there. There was some ppl that thrived off our triggers. They told me 72hours held me for 10 days gave me no information on how and when discharge would go. Honestly would never go again. I think thr only reason why it helped was for some of the other residents and very few staff like the MHTs Carol Tate Hannah where honestly the 3 main ppl that where awesome there where more but these 3 where hands down the best.

Costal harbor is the worse, the kids could grow and adults if the staff was better, I ve seen some staff talk so ugly to patient and project their feelings on a patient all because she had some issues at home, a lot of the staff also shows favoritism. It sucks don t bring your children here if you want them to get better. The reviews are real if you see good ones it s because 1/100 of the staff probably was nice and your family got lucky.

I see all of these comments and 100% agree. I got admitted July 19, 2022. I didn t get out for another week and they said it was only gonna be 72 hours. Also, i was really upset because i couldn t see my family and i was BAWLING my eyes out and NOBODY comforted me or told me it was gonna be ok, they just told us to go to sleep. And they also let this girl sleep walk and she was pulling peoples hair and scaring everybody and they did nothing about it. (not the girls fault that she does that i m talking about the staff that didn t help her) and i had to lie my way out of there like others have said and all we did was play games and watch disney channel. Please do not send your loved ones here.

I am reading the reviews and I must say I agree with the fact that they hold people longer than needed due to insurance! I have a sibling in this facility as we speak who has been held for over a week! (They have really good insurance) retired veteran from the military. Our calls go unanswered, we have been hung up on, I have made multiple calls, I feel helpless and disregarded! I live in a whole different state! Please do not send your loved ones to this facility!!! We want answers, we care about our loved one and will not rest until they are home with children.

I ve enjoyed the service I ve received and continue to receive at this facility. I ve had my fare share of circumstances as well as mental and physical setbacks however, Coastal Harbor has been most helpful in my experience. The process is never easy but it s always comforting to know there is a wonderfully structured, kind, accessible space to be yourself while receiving assistance on being the best person you can be. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers that make this possible.
