About Center for Discovery Plano

Located in Plano, Texas, the Center for Discovery Plano provides eating disorder treatment to individuals between the ages of 9 and 18. Their residential treatment center is LGBTQ-inclusive. It is important to note that this location is not an alcohol and drug rehab center.

The residential program is for individuals who need 24/7 supervision. Evidence-based treatment interventions, life skills training, nutritional support, mindful movement, yoga, individual therapy, group therapy, and psychoeducational classes are provided. Individuals will learn how to identify their triggers, build self-confidence, and learn effective ways to communicate their needs.

Upon completion of the residential program, individuals may choose to continue treatment to more effectively manage their mental health. This commonly takes the form of ongoing counseling, participation in alumni groups, and participation in community self-help groups.

Center for Discovery Plano accepts most insurance plans, including Amerigroup, Optum, Cigna, Tricare, Anthem, Brightstar Health, United Healthcare, and more. Out-of-network benefits may vary, so verifying coverage with the provider before starting treatment is important.

I am sorry it has taken me this long to write a review. I wanted to make sure that I had the time to really write in detail how well my son did with the program at Center for Discovery and how much he connected not only with the other kids there but with the staff. It has made a huge impact on him and us. Sometimes, I felt like we were spoiled. :)This has been a long journey and especially for my son since we didn't know till much later. When the decision was made that he needed to go to a residential, I was terrified and nervous. They worked super hard with our insurance to get him in and because CFD is 3.5 hours away from us, I was very reluctant, but we knew we had to do what we had to do for the health and healing journey for our child. It was a struggle trying to find a place that accepted adolescent males. I thank God every day that CFD accepted boys. We were so scared that were not going to be able to find anything for him in the state.Thankfully, we were able with the help of CFD speaking with the insurance back and forth, he was in. At this point he and the family just wanted to get started with this program. We were all so exhausted and I was emotionally drained. When we came for his admission, the whole staff greeted us with kind hearts and smiles. Just the knowing how scared and anxious families are they knew exactly how to read the room.Everyone was so very help for the first few weeks when I would ask a bazillion questions. I was scared about the medications, scared about everything. The whole fear of the unknown. And let me tell you, Marisol, Mallory and so many more were so patient and kind with me and my fears. It is like they know what they are doing or something lol!! But seriously. I don't know what I would have done without them talking me off the ledge sometimes because of my son being far and not being able to see him but once a week, that was tough for me. And everyone has their own battles, that one was mine.My son made some friends along the way and still is in contact with them once in a while and feel that is needed during this time of healing and recovery with teens. They need a good support system. The kids there were so supportive of him like they were family and felt great knowing he had that there and I was able to sleep just a little better at night knowing that.Once he finally broke out of his shell and began to really dive deep into what he needed to do to start this process, he did amazing. CFD was there for him and us every step of the way.He came out like a champ, and I am so proud of him and everyone at CFD for doing the hard work you do. It must be so rewarding and hard at the same time, with your heart strings being pulled every which way. YOU ALL ARE HEROS!Thank you so much for everything and if anyone ever needs a residential go to Center for Discovery.Much Love!

I was here January through March, 2024. Any reviews before May 2023 are from old, irresponsible management, and under Casey (Site Manager) and Kaitlyn (Lead Therapist/Clinical Manager) everything has run much better, and patients are treated with care and individual respect. From all the other residentials I have heard of from others, this is the place to be. This eating disorder residential is like no other that I've seen or heard of. I flew in from NC, so I can't say much for other Texas residentials, but I can say that two months here was one of the most beneficial experiences I have ever had. There are eating disorder and diet technicians, who are very well trained and prepare nutritious meals by the individualized diet orders of each patient, and genuinely care about the experience and healing of the patients they are working with. The staff was one of the best parts of my stay here. They keep a watchful eye on patients, yet don't make them feel as if they are in prison. CFD Plano is definitely a home setting. Here, myself and other patients are not only medically watched and stabilized, but also learn how to plan, cook, and understand meals ourselves. I came out of CFD with a much better knowledge and mindset about eating, with the careful patience of my entire care team.Primary care teams consist of a trained therapist, psychiatrist, dietitian, and pediatrician (only adolescents at this center). Patients are also cared for by on-site nurses, day and overnight staff, and occasional external doctor visits with guardian consent, if necessary. This treatment center was my first, and I gained a well-rounded understanding of all the processes and routines. The staff is very well informing.I felt safe here.Visiting hours are every evening, and after the patient moves up in their treatment, passes to take time with family may be granted. The treatment center cares for patients 9-18, and though those who come here for care are mostly teenagers, I have personally seen how well the team responds to caring for younger children. 10/10 recommend. In my time here, I had Stephanie as my therapist and Helen Mary as my dietitian. They were the most amazing clinicians I have had to this day. Both were very patient and understanding with me, having worked in this field for years, yet pushed me at the perfect pace to make sure I was recovering at the right pace for me. There are hard times in treatment, and I felt supported in my struggle in recovery. Stephanie worked with me on my other issues, such as communication, familial relationships, and self image, as well as my eating disorder. She made me feel understood and talked to me about what she was doing and why, along with my parents. Stephanie played one of the most crucial roles in my time here, and prepared me for leaving and being on my own from day one. Defiantely my favorite therapist out of the five that I have had in treatment. My dietitian, Helen Mary (Katool) played another crucial role in my recovery. She individualizes meal sizes and food exposures to each patient, and pushed me to broaden my tolerance of food in a way that I have seen no other dietitian master. Ms. Katool showed me a different way of viewing food, and intertwined therapeutic methods and exposures into how she teaches and treats clients with nutrition. I have also seen her work well with young children. In the first few days of treatment, patients will get ten minutes of phone time every night, and will move up in allotted times throughout treatment. Phone numbers will have to be approved by guardians to call.CFD does not tube patients, and will closely monitor their health. If nutritional deficiency are low to the concern of the patient's team, the patient will be admitted to the nearest hospital.CFDP treats multiple eating disorders. My review comes from my point of anorexia nervosa, but I was also alongside those and informed of those with bulimia, BED, and ARFID, who also got individualized treatment and groups pertaining to their needs.I will add the rest in the Q&A.

My child had an excellent experience here. We sent our kiddo five states away to be in this program after extensively interviewing other programs on the east half of the nation. They did wonders for our kid. Do not hesitate to send your child here. The therapy was tremendous and nutritional education and learning to plate and make decisions about food really helped. My kid still misses and talks about res. I think that says a lot! Thank you CFD!

Heather, we are so glad that your kiddo is using the skills they learned with us at CFD! We are grateful to have been a part of their recovery journey.

Accepted Insurance

Center for Discovery Plano works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
After completing some form of inpatient care, many clients transition or step down to an outpatient rehab, while some choose to transition from detox directly into outpatient care. High-intensity outpatient programming, including partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) is widely available for clients in early recovery, those leaving detox, and those at an elevated relapse risk. Clients in outpatient care generally engage in robust addiction counseling and recovery education, and some also receive medication assisted treatment (MAT).
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
24-hour clinical care in Texas provides a safe environment for medical detox. This setting is crucial to provide medical care during withdrawal. Certain withdrawal symptoms can cause life-threatening conditions, but patients in a supervised clinical setting have treatment readily available to address any symptoms before they become severe. Treatment can also be provided for co-occurring physical and mental health issues.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Peer support is an important aspect of group therapy sessions for drug and alcohol addiction. As you and your peers share stories and encourage each other, it fosters a sense of community and belonging that helps you process your feelings and reduces the sense of isolation that is associated with addiction.

Individual therapy offers you a confidential space to address the complexities of your drug or alcohol addiction. Your therapist guides these personalized sessions to help develop self awareness and manage stress. This promotes sustained sobriety and overall well being.

Together with an experienced trauma therapist, you work on healing emotional wounds from traumatic experiences within a trauma therapy environment. Your therapist will help you process the experience of the trauma, which promotes emotional healing and improves your overall mental health.

Couples therapy helps couples learn to control emotions, trust each other, and communicate more effectively. It can be useful for short term intervention for a specific issue or for working on the relationship long term.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

The purpose of family therapy is to create a supportive and understanding family dynamic within the family unit. Therapists help individual members to identify and change harmful behavior patterns and improve communication. This provides a stable foundation for the family and their loved one's recovery.

THANKFUL & GRATEFUL!!! We let the journey begin with the CFD in Plano with much hesitation, after reading reviews online. We are so thankful to Casey and her team, she asked me to give her a chance and I am so glad that we did! Memo is so happy and on target for her restoration and we have the team in Plano to be thankful for. God lead me and we followed. The team at CFD in Plano helped to uproot seeds in Memo that we thought were buried and gone. It's so good to see her laughing and happy again. The friends that she made will forever be in our thoughts and prayers. CFD in PLANO ROCKS!!!!

I ask all parents to please read this from a parent whose son just spent 4 weeks at the Plano house. Please read this and do not ignore all the bad reviews, as I did. Do not make the same mistake our family did in entrusting this program with our child. Our 14 year old son arrived at Center for Discovery in February 2024. We live in Arizona and traveled to Texas, as they had a spot for him ready. Immediately I was concerned about the co-ed living arrangements. I was assured that the staff was on top of everyone maintaining their distance and that many of the patients were on 24/7 watch. The first week was fine. My son's therapist was Monica, who we very much appreciated and enjoyed. We were confident he was in good hands. Two weeks into his stay we learned that our son and 14 year old girl had kissed. We wanted answers as to HOW they had the opportunity and what was being done to ensure these kids could focus on treatment and not their hormones. We were told that the techs and night team weren't able to facilitate a close enough eye on everyone and there would inevitably going to be times when they would be left alone together. But that they would try their best. Because we were so desperate for our son to recieve treatment and were happy with his progress with his therapist, we decided to keep him there and trust that CFD would keep him safe. Fast forward to March 18th, I received a phone call from my son's therapist stating that she was informed that him and another patient were rough housing with bubble wrap (when they should have been sleeping) and that the bubble wrap ended up covering the face of the other patient (who has a fear of choking). I was told that they were just playing and it harmless. I was told that they had to inform the parent of the other patient what had happened and they had an extreme concern (due to previous interactions with this parent) that this parent would get in his car, drive to the house, and potentially cause harm to my son. She asked me if I could have my friend who lives there locally could come get him immediately, as I am in Arizona. His therapist told me he was doing so well but that the house was toxic and she didn't feel like my son was safe there any longer. I asked her point blank, "Are you telling me I need to get my child from you because he's in harm's way?" She gave a resounding YES. My husband then took the phone for clarity, and after 20 minutes of him speaking with our sons therapist, it was revealed that he was being given an administrative discharge. Instead of removing the threat against my son (which seemingly is also a threat for all the other patients), they decided to discharge my son because they are fearful of the threat? It makes no sense. My friend picked my son up immediately and tool him to her house, where we had to arrange his transition home. I never received a single follow up after that. No one has called me to clarify the situation, no one has called to give us information on what follow up care they believe he needs, nothing. They failed my child. They robbed him of an opportunity to make a full recovery in that time in space.I wish I would have gone with my gut when I saw the other reviews, as I am here to state very sincerely are all also in-line with our experience. I don't doubt that CFD may have locations and teams that do an excellent job. But the Plano Corinthian house is severely lacking. I couldn't assure you that your child is safe here. I couldn't encourage anyone to put their child here. If you're looking for treatment for your son or daughter, keep looking! You'll only find set-backs here.

If I could I would ve given this place 0 stars. I was there from November 2020 to February 2021. This place was a horrible experience and I wouldn t wish this on my worst enemy, most of the staff where terrible, we were treated like inmates, and there was definitely some kind of abuse of power. I would always comply no matter what just so I could get out in just a few weeks but they kept me longer because of my insurance. If you have Tricare, do not go here they will keep you there longer no matter how well you have been doing. This place doesn t prepare you for dealing with eating outside the facility and I ended up relapsing a few months after getting out. I am lactose intolerant and they would always force me to eat dairy products and take a lactaid pill afterwards (it doesn t do anything). There was multiple people on the staff that treated us like we were inmates and didn t see us as individuals. They were always suspicious of us no matter what we were doing and would abuse the power they had over us and treat us terribly. I was almost always accused of making myself vomit even though I can t handle it and you would know if I did. I am also autistic and I would constantly defend myself when it would come to the textures of different foods and would express this to my therapist and the dietitian. I have many horror stories but this has already gone on long enough.

If I could give 0 stars I would. This place is traumatic, I have had nightmares for over 2 years now. Don't ever send your kid here. I was here in 2022 and I struggle from arfid, take note this is an anxiety related food disorder and not a self image related one. This place treats patients like literal prisoners! Checks, clothes checks, privileges taken. Like we did something illegal in life and we were serving time! The therapists were HORRIBLE. I struggle from a hair pulling disorder which is just a complusive disorder, the therapist took away every right I had such as; using the bathroom by myself, going on walks, and moving. They only care about your money. I moved pretty quickly with progress and they kept me till my parents insurance stopped paying, like they did with every other kid. The therapist had a whole meeting with my parents to take away my phone because they thought it was detrimental to my ed, it wasn't. It was a waste of time for my stay to have a meeting on this topic. This place gives you a whole bottle of supplements just for one small piece of food left. I got to the point where I threw up and felt sick multiple times due to the overfeeding. Kids are supposed to move! One little girl who was in there with me was yelled at constantly and kept in a wheelchair, like I get it if your health is low but kids still need some form of activity! DONT SEND ANYONE HERE!

We can't thank this Center enough for the work they did for our daughter. They did intensive rehabilitation which resulted in our daughter gaining weight and completely changing the way she looked and felt about herself! The doctor is great, he knows what blood work can say about the nourishment your body needs and what it's been missing! Stephanie is highly trained in her line of work and I'm so glad she was who my daughter was being cared for by, she was assertive and that's what our daughter needed. Thank you all for the care & excellent work yall did to help us heal our child!

Would NOT recommend this facility for many reasons. First there's a constant turnover of staff. We were told before admission that we were waiting on a bed/room to become available and was delayed 2 weeks only to find out the delay was not a bed/room opening up, it was to hire a new therapist. No problem withe the therapist but wish we would have been told the truth. The location is in a beautiful high-end neighborhood in Plano but the house is in deplorable condition and is definitely the worst looking house in the subdivision. There's a shattered window in the front, the exterior and the landscape looks like it has not been maintained since the beginning of time. The house itself is filthy inside....I know a number of people occupy the house but there's no reason for it to be in the shape it was always in...dirty. There was also a funky smell in the house each time we visited. The swimming pool in the back yard was HIDEOUS .. green and black and dirty as heck. We were told repeatedly by the manager that the pump was broken but it never got repaired. It was truly disgusting. Lastly, my granddaughter left behind some personal belongings that were locked up when she left, and it took us 7 weeks to get the manager to return them to us and that only happened after I called corporate. My repeated phone calls and emails went unanswered by the manager (Casey) but suddenly when corporate was on the phone (or email) with her my package was miraculously mailed that evening. This may sound petty but it is anything but petty to me. Overall, I would NOT recommend this facility to anyone for any reason. There are other nicer facilities that are ran much better than this one. I couldn't wait to get my granddaughter out of there. This place was recommended by our medical team in Houston but obviously they have not seen the place in person or they would likely not be so eager to recommend them. Please save yourself the headache and heartache, do your homework and find a better managed, cleaner facility for your child. If we would have visited beforehand we likely would have NEVER put our granddaughter there.

Run more like a correctional facility than a treatment center.Although the majority of the staff has resigned since my admission, it still does not excuse what this program has done to me.During my first month, I had done a full 180: I was feeling more confident in my recovery and genuinely felt like I could live a life free from my eating disorder. Then, they made me stay another month. I was punished if I ever opened up about my struggles or said anything about wanting to go home. I slipped into a deep depression and my therapist would constantly tell me that anything I tried to talk about was "unhelpful". The schedule is rigid and repetitive with little time outdoors. The staff is all college-age and seem to only work there to stay triggered. There are no re-introductory portions to food and they feed you a normal amount, forcing you to supplement when you don't finish. This made me incredibly sick, as well as many of the other residents.Throughout my stay, I felt as if the only person that listened and helped me was the doctor that would come in weekly, Dr. S. Bonman. Without her, I doubt I would've made it through the program. She would actively advocate for us, for the staff did not take any of us residents with validity.Additionally, it is worth mentioning that they will keep you longer than necessary based on your insurance: DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU HAVE TRICARE!I am hoping this long-winded review will give insight to a parent or patient considering treatment here- I came in hopeful, left 10 weeks later, and relapsed immediately. I was set up for failure, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone else seeking to overcome their eating disorder.

I live every day in fear of being sent back here. It s run by teenagers. They don t have psychiatric experience. If we were upset, or completely having a panic attack, we would be dismissed and told to journal our feelings. My friend had to swallow back down her own vomit in order to not be demoted down a level. I was put on anti-psychotics without my parents being aware of it. Fabi (a tech there) once took spaghetti off of my plate saying I had too much. She also once said that cookie butter was unhealthy for us. I complied. I ate every meal. I never had to take supplements. Still, I spent as much time as all the other girls there. This was in 2021, during covid time, and it was so hard to see my family. The DAY BEFORE I was supposed to be released, I expressed to my therapist that I was nervous, but ready. Right after that, she said because of my response, I would need to be held for another week. Luckily my parents took me out. Not every staff was bad, they were just trying to do their job. But this did not help me recover a single bit. I had to start EMDR therapy for the mental trauma I endured here. I came out of this facility with an even stronger desire to lose all the weight I gained. I m happy to say that after joining a sport and getting into therapy, I'm much better now. My life has never been the same since I came here. And I just want to let go.

Do not receive treatment here if you have any medical struggles. One time I was having heart palpitations, so I sat down on the couch. I tried to stand up and passed out on the floor. The nurse apparently took her time coming into the milliu, and someone got me into a wheelchair where I was taken into the nurses office. I sat there for hours partially unconscious for hours. The nurse was calling the staff who was on call (Jessie, my "therapist") but she refused to come so nobody took me to the hospital. The nurse could have, but there was supposed to be a certain amount of staff in the house at a time so she stayed. I I felt terrible for almost two days after. I went to the phone to call my mom, asking for her to come. I felt unsafe, uncared for, and needing medical treatment. An ED tech came over to end my call and report me. I got level dropped for calling my mom. It's been about a year since I was admitted into this residential facility and I am still recovering from, working through and processing the treatment trauma I now have. This place overworks you and overshoots what they want you to achieve to the point that you relapse. And then they get disappointed when it happens and you feel like a failure. rather than supporting what you achieved and helping you through your struggles, I felt very alone. My therapist, Jessie, did not know how to handle the topics I needed to talk about, and multiple times I left our sessions feeling degraded and belittled. I did not progress at all with her, and our family sessions went terribly and were not guided at all by her, my parents can attest to this. The staff here treats patients as if they ARE their eating disorders, which is the opposite of what should be happening. When something very wrong would happen in the facility that should be prohibited, the group would try to talk to the head of the place (Nick), and we would be brushed off and told we are making excuses for not recovering. There was at least one or two staff members with active eating disorders, and one of them would outright talk about their behaviors they have used/wanted to use and used very disordered language. She was obviously very unhealthy and it was not helpful to be around her, but we were never listened to about our concerns. They care more about weight gain than true recovery. Although weight gain is important, you could be physically stable, eating enough and significantly recovered and they will make you stay if you haven't reached 98-100% weight restoration, which can make you literally go crazy because you are kept there for way too long. I was there for two months. Once I started to eat less to go to the hospital just so I could get out and have my parents take me home. (It didn't work). This place feels literally like jail. I left ONE time during my two month stay. The rest of the time I spent in the living room of the house, and when I tried to leave to sit by the window under the stairs because I needed alone time when the group got too loud, I got in trouble. You lose all sense of self here. There is so much more I could say, but to keep this from turning into an essay, I recommend you not come here if you are a more severe case, especially if you have any level of medical struggles (even vitals). If you are a parent reading this, I recommend you check out Clementine maybe, I've heard good things about their residential program.Treatment trauma is real.
