About Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital

Cascade Behavioral Health Hospital was a mental health hospital in Tukwila, Washington, that has closed. When it was open, it had treatment programs for drug addiction and alcohol addiction. It was part of the Acadia Healthcare network, which has about 250 other locations in the US and Puerto Rico.

This hospital focused on giving every person the complete care they needed to get back on their feet and recover from their addiction. They had treatment for every step of recovery including acute medical detox so this hospital could be your first step when you are ready to get help. They would help you through detox and withdrawal and then guide you through therapy and other treatments for long term sobriety.

Cascade Behavioral Health really took a comprehensive approach to addiction recovery. They would work with patients in a culturally relevant way to make sure everyone’s care reflected what they needed. They took social wellness into account too to help patients build a support system for sobriety. Unfortunately, many clients did have frustrations with the hospital and said it wasn’t well organized and that the services they received weren’t very individualized.

The good news is that even though this hospital closed, there are still plenty of other rehabs in the area where you can get help.

(Updating my review from a year ago)After 9 months sober moved back to Seattle and life fell apart. Lost everything and was just barely holding on to my job. Sleeping at work/ bathhouses and riding the bus for hours. High and tweaking on the streets I called Cascade behavioral health. They got me in the same day and gave me a safe place to Detox. My insurance was not valid and they still helped me out and got me into a treatment facility in California. Today I have a 153 days sober, a good job at a hospital in Fountain Valley California and a roof over me head. Thank you Cascade and to my case manager/ social worker. I thank God for all the caring people at Cascade.

The absolute disrespect for people in a mental health crisis is appalling. My family member needed feminine products and was ignored. She asked for ibuprofen for cramps and was ignored. They "misplaced" her personal items. The 5+ hour wait for admission wasn't ideal, but I am understanding of that. They treat people there like animals, not human beings. For the love of God, DO NOT send your loved ones here. This place needs to be shut down.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Fitness therapy blends exercise with psychotherapy for a fun, inspiring, and effective way of treating addiction and other issues. By incorporating movement into counseling sessions, clients become more empowered, motivated, and goal-oriented, all while strengthening their bodies and becoming more flexible. Fitness Therapy is usually used to complement a course of treatment (inpatient or outpatient) to make it even more successful. Increasing the connection between a patient’s mind and body helps both with healing as well as in creating new, healthy habits.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

One star is being way to generous. Out of roughly 20 phone calls to check the status of our relative I was able to get someone to answer the phone twice. This was on the local line and the toll free line. Would get into the hold message twice before getting a message during the second hold stating "due to technical difficulties we were unable to complete your call" and it would simply hang up. You would think they would have staff to assist people checking in on their loved ones. Also our neice was assaulted by another patient and they simply moved him to another location and gave medical assistance two days later when she originally complained her wrist was hurting badly. No excuse for this place to be treating people with mental issues or anything else

Worst customer service experience I've ever had. Called 33 times. Hung up on 4 times and then no answers. The one "nurse" I was able to speak with was very rude and unhelpful. If I could give less stars, I would.

All one has to do is look at the number of 1-Star reviews to see how terrible this place is. If you are considering coming here, read their website, and then forget everything you read there. This place brings in close to $1500 per patient per day. They will do extreme things, including false court testimoney, to keep you there and the money coming. They say if you can leave when you want when you check in voluntarily, but it isn't true. They will confiscate bras and any clothing that has even a 3" string on it. There is no visitation allowed due to covid, they say, but never once in nearly 3 weeks did I receive a covid test. The only therapy is group therapy. Some of it it decent, but three to four hours of coloring and / or class but certainly isn't worth the cost they charge the insurance company or the county. There are no therapists, and you get between 3-10 min per day of time with a social worker and psychiatrist combined on average. They tell you to bring your own meds when you come, but they won't let you take them. They will supply you with their own meds you have prescribed unless they don't have it. In that case, you are SOL and won't get it. Proper dosages aren't always provided, and it is anxiety inducing babysitting the license medical providers. Not all the staff are terrible. There are plenty with a good heart, but they lack authority or control to fix things. I spent nearly 3 weeks, with not one moment of time outside for fresh air. You will literally be bored out of your mind. You can make calls, but you will be competing with perhaps a dozen or so other patients for the only working phone.Patient advocate didn't respond to calls, patient advocacy form was a waste of effort, and the Dept of Health refused calls for assistance. Do not trust your health with these people. There are better alternatives.I literally had to go to court twice to leave this place. Even after my release was ordered, they were defiant in my release.
