About Expanse Wilderness

WinGate Wilderness Therapy is a behavioral health program based in Kanab, Utah. WinGate's program helps clients learn to cope with their mental health and behavioral issues by combining outdoor adventure therapy and traditional talk therapy. They serve teen and adolescent clients. WinGate follows the Actual Wilderness Experience model, where clients are separated from the distractions of their daily lives so they can better focus on recovery and developing coping skills. Clients participate in outdoor living and therapy under the guidance of a team of professionals, including medical staff and professional wilderness guides. Services offered include:

Clients reside at the facility under the watch of staff during the treatment program. Clients do not return home during this time, and their connections with the outside world are limited to minimize distractions. As a nature based program, clients spend much of their time in campsites outdoors.

Daily life in the WinGate program follows a regular schedule, which includes hiking, group meetings, and therapeutic assignments. Clients are given personal time to focus on self-reflection or therapeutic assignments. Clients are responsible for establishing and cleaning up their own campsites.

In addition to the coping and life skills typically learned in therapy, clients develop a strong sense of self, cultivate emotional resilience, and build on their social skills to support long term recovery.

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from your body under the care of medical professionals. In an inpatient environment, you'll be monitored 24/7 by doctors, nurses, and clinical experts, who will help keep you as safe and comfortable as possible and administer medication if needed to treat any withdrawal symptoms. The process may take up to a week or longer depending on your needs, and is often at least partially covered by insurance.

book iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

When you enter a drug rehab in Utah, the process usually involves four stages: treatment initiation, early abstinence, maintaining abstinence, and advanced recovery. Treatment methods can rely on medications, counseling, or both, in either an outpatient or inpatient setting.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Family Therapy

One of the distinctive features of WinGate Wilderness Therapy program is the level of family involvement related to the overall treatment. We treat troubled teens and young adults AS WELL AS their families. While the troubled teen or young adult is the one in the wilderness, their therapists make a point to involve the entire family in the therapy process. From assessment to transition, the family participates in the treatment process.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

You have to be willing to take some time and look at places that offer what you need. Our son was so full of anger because of a loss that he needed help through it all. We are not professionals so we made sure he had what he needed here. He s home now and doing so much better. It was the right decision for us.
