About Whole Life Recovery

Whole Life Recovery is a drug and alcohol rehab facility for adults and young adults in San Juan Capistrano, California. This facility provides intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) and general outpatient care as well as intervention services, offering gender-specific care for men and women.

For families and friends who have a loved one suffering from substance use disorder, Whole Life Recovery offers intervention services to encourage the person to proceed with treatment and to facilitate a smooth transition to treatment.

The intensive outpatient program or IOP at Whole Life Recovery is a comprehensive drug rehab program that uses evidence-based and holistic treatment methods such as individual, group, and family therapy, addiction education, life-skills training, and relapse prevention. Approaches may include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based methods.

Whole Life Recovery’s general outpatient program is a step down from the IOP, allowing clients to integrate ongoing treatment into their lives while working full-time or going to school full-time and living off-site. Clients receive continued therapy sessions as well as education about drug and alcohol addiction and relapse prevention planning.

Whole Life Recovery may accept some insurance plans from providers such as Kaiser Permanente, HCSC, Ambetter, Anthem, Beacon, Humana, Cigna, and Bright Health. Because insurance plans vary, be sure to verify coverage information and out of network details with the insurer.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Levels of Care

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I do not recommend Whole Life. Here are some of my thoughts and experiences. My therapist was terrific. Some of the groups were really educational and/or therapeutic. They did take us to the beach once a week, and they did provide food. Their sober living facilities are not at all what they say, but they are adequate. Some of the staff members are really good, some really not.Staff communication is almost non-existent, which leads to a lot of general confusion. There seems to be a lot of ^fluff^ programming.... it was borderline insulting,, to build a structure with marshmallows and drier spaghetti. At the top level, there is Melody Stone, Clinical Director. I personally don't like her, and she has stated publicly that she doesn't like me.When I left, Whole Life wanted me to sign a form stating they had returned all my personal items. Since I was still waiting for a prescription (Lyrica) they had insisted on filling on my behalf and I needed, I said I would happily sign the form once I had the prescription, which I knew was waiting at a pharmacy about a mile away. A lot of drama ensued, they refused to get the prescription, so I refused to sign the form.Melody's response was to direct my referral not to pay for a ride for me to the AIRPORT the next day. I had no funds for Uber or a taxi. Staff at Whole Life knew this, Melody Stone knew it, and my referral Tyson knew it.I HITCH-HIKED to the airport from my treatment at Whole Life. Way to care for a client, Whole Life. Thanks, Melody. Very slimy work, Tyson. Shame on you. Some of the groups were questionable, like the one where we were supposed to do this breathing technique till we felt the "high."Others, like the weekly Psyco Drama, were, in my experience, downright dangerous. I had stated my objections to the group to numerous staff members, and in writing. The person leading the group had no control, so from what little I saw, the whole thing was a circus. Still, I was urged by my therapist, not just to participate, but to really jump in there, take a chance, be vulnerable. It was my last day there, so I said okay, I would use the opportunity for feedback on how to talk with my husband. I gave an example of what I thought would be good. You are supposed to do this in dialogue with another person who, in this case, would respond as my "husband." And... I'm not sure how, but it basically turned into a free for all, lash into Maria session. The whole group jumped in. Some of these people I had thought were my friends, some I barely knew, but they all seemed to agree that I am a controlling, selfish, generally unlikable person, and they would make damn sure I knew it. This went on for about 40 minutes, and it worked, I was completely demolished. I left at the end of the session in tears, and cried in the bathroom through the 15 minutes allocated for my encouraging, positive "coin out" ceremony.I am crying as I write this. Now that I think of it, I never even got the damn coin. Thanks, Melody Stone, Clinical Director, for insisting on this portion of my treatment. You are lucky I didn't go out and kill myself. Also, they kept me in "detox" for 28 days, before I was even allowed to start treatment. That was for insurance money. There are good treatment centers. Do your own research. Keep looking. But do go!!

I can't say enough bad things about this place. We sent our son here with the understanding that the insurance would cover the cost. After he left, he received a bill. These people are scam artists and there is active drug use in the sober home living per my son. Whole Life told us our insurance wouldn't cover our son's care for his third month. Our insurance company told us we could appeal the decision. All we needed was for the counselors at Whole Life Recovery to submit information to the health insurance company. Multiple people at Whole Life gave us the run around for a week and refused to call us back. We called his counselor, the case manager, the program director, etc. No one would give us answers or talk to the insurance company. They were pressuring us to pay for his care instead of working with the insurance company. We had no problem with paying for the care if the insurance company wouldn't pay for it, but they refused to appeal with the insurance company. I believe they wanted us to pay more for the care than the insurance was willing to pay. We decided at that time that he probably wasn't getting the care he needed there if these people were so immoral and dishonest. They never even had an exit plan for him. I ended up rushing around trying to get him into another program and none of those programs had anything good to say about Whole Life Recovery. They refused to recommend Whole Life when their programs were filled. One man said they were known for their "bad business practices."

My son was a recent client at Whole Life Recovery. He had been to several facilities in the last year and has not had an easy time of it. However, somehow he started to show great signs of improvement here and I came to realize what an amazing staff and program he was experiencing and that was what made all the difference. Unfortunately due to the end of the year and for insurance reasons he could not continue his stay here. Instead of just releasing him, he was kept on for more than two weeks without any monies being paid and his caseworker Lorin Bice worked tirelessly to get him into another program and was so supportive. He was not discharged until she was positive that a plan was in place. Being 3000 miles away, this was quite a relief to me. I have come to learn that a lot of rehabs are in it for the wrong reasons but I can honestly say the people at Whole Life are in it for the right reasons and I am truly grateful to them for the compassionate way my son was treated. I would highly recommend their program for anyone struggling with substance abuse or mental health issues.

Whole life recovery has literally changed my life. I have been in treatment in the past and unfortunately had a relapse. Relapse didn t define me as I now understand it s a lifelong journey and with the right tools and caring therapists that allow and encourage honesty, neuron feedback and group therapy that makes sense has turned my life around. Thank you whole life.

I personally went through this program and graduated. I flew in from Dallas. All programs have their ups and downs. Looking back I wish I had really put my all into their program. Things would be a lot different now. I have been through several recovery centers in orange county. The thing is you only get out what you put in. Most if not all the staff genuinely care about you and our unique struggle with addiction. I would recommend them. In my opinion, the only downside is it's only 90 days. Most are. I had to do a six month live in program for the foundation to be lasting and solid. All around this is a good place. Better, way better than a few I've been through but won't mention. If you truly want help, positive change, peace and serenity along with sobriety. Definitely try them. Just be more willing and open than I was.

My experience with Whole life Recovery was really good. They took the time and listen to me and then helped guide my way though anything I was having trouble with. I would recommend my family and friends to this program if they needed help. I want to thank the people there for all the help. <3

Not recommended. Melody stone is an awful program director. They are completely clueless about treatment, especially for people with mental health issues. They will lie to you about treatment options they offer, do not believe them. You will be going to NA meetings for 11 hours a day. You will barely ever get to speak to a therapist. If you leave they will not give you meds, they will not let you speak to a doctor, and they will not give you a ride to the airport. They do not want to help you, they only want your money.
