About Wheeler Health – Plainville Family Health & Wellness Center

The Wheeler Clinic in Plainville, Connecticut, offers medical care, mental health care, and substance use treatment. This clinic stands out because behavioral health services are available on a walk in basis. They offer an intensive outpatient program (IOP), regular outpatient care, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Treatment services include counseling, case management, peer support, dual diagnosis care, and MAT using Vivitrol, Brixadi, and buprenorphine. They also have LGBTQ+ responsive services and can connect clients to services at other Wheeler locations, such as autism services, after school support for children and adolescents, and an alternative school.

The Wheeler Clinic also looks out for clients’ wellness by providing financial support, access to fresh produce, and community health workers who connect clients to community resources.

Reviews for Wheeler Clinic are mixed, with many clients concerned that therapists don’t stay very long, so clients have to start over with new counselors often. However, many clients are very happy with their therapists and feel well cared for.

book iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

prescription iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Connecticut provides the professional support that is often necessary to break free from drug dependency. With proper treatment, individuals can make changes that restore balance and health to their lives and achieve long-term recovery.

head-side-medical iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

file-medical iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

prescription-bottle-pill iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

bed-front iconInpatient

house-medical iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) offer robust support for clients who are at an elevated risk of relapse, including those in early recovery and those in crisis. Clients in intensive outpatient treatment typically receive between nine and 20 hours of service per week, with the intensity and frequency of treatment decreasing as clients stabilize. The services provided in these programs vary, but generally include addiction counseling, recovery-focused life skills training, medication assisted treatment (MAT), and holistic therapies.

people-group iconIntervention Services

Intervention services can be crucial to successfully plan and complete a drug intervention in Connecticut. A professional interventionist can walk loved ones through the careful step-by-step process of carrying out an intervention. This process may be necessary if an individual is causing physical harm to themselves or others, when it is apparent that they aren't going to get help, or when they deny they have a problem at all.

truck-medical icon24-Hour Clinical Care

At times during the addiction treatment process, medical professionals must provide 24-hour clinical care in Connecticut. The processes are medically supervised due to the potential dangers of withdrawal symptoms. Staff often prescribe medications to manage these symptoms and curb cravings.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Typically seen as a first step in the recovery process, medically assisted detox generally takes place in an inpatient setting under the 24/7 supervision of licensed medical professionals. It is considered the safest way to remove addictive drugs from your body. The length of a medical detox program is individualized, but it often takes around 5-7 days.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing in Connecticut is a method of communication designed to stimulate motivation and commitment to change. It encourages clients to move toward goals by exploring their own motivations for change rather than coercing them to change through advice, warnings, or judgment.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapeutic technique that uses bilateral stimulation to help you integrate traumatic memories and reduce the symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder. It reduces the emotional impact of trauma and replaces negative beliefs and thinking with positive ones. This improves your overall emotional health.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life Skills

During rehab treatment, you and your therapist will identify any life skills that you need to develop. Your treatment will include methods to strengthen those skills so you can have a successful long term recovery. These skills include thinking skills, self awareness, and interpersonal skills.

They should hire more staff if they are going to accept that many people. Current staff puts hurtful judgment and comments to their patients. One time I waited for almost four hours for my appointment only to be told to come back tomorrow. My therapist says she "needs 24 hou ... Read More

I was told to come here for help and all i got from the walk in experience was a 2 hour wait for a zoom call. from there, went into crisis and was told to go by the doctor since i wasn't happy with the experience. if it wasn't for a friend that I immediately called you would have a dead guy with slashes at the wrist in your parking lot.
