About Westcare Georgia Guidance Center
WestCare Georgia Guidance Center is a substance abuse facility that is FREE of charge for young men ages 18-26. We provide motivation along the way to grow in our program by rewarding good choices and behavior.
The therapeutic community approach to residential substance abuse treatment has been proven effective. In therapeutic residential community, residents reside together working for a common goal. The resident population at WestCare Georgia Guidance Center may often be described as the community, and residents may be referred to as community members. The program participants are responsible for the community and the staff oversee the community. In a TC residents need to demonstrate the skills they have learned and reflect the level of treatment they are in. The following are active participants in your treatment process.
Phase 1 is the learning phase of the program. The beginning of this process is intake/orientation which will include a tour; including showing you where the following items are located: emergency exits and/or shelters, fire suppression equipment and first aid kits. Staff will determine when resident has learned the client handbook. The focus of treatment will be on orientation to recovery, learning program rules and guidelines, overall program functions, daily expectations, and daily routines. During this phase a resident will be expected to identify problematic issues, develop an individual treatment plan.
The Accepting phase: after learning the basics of the program, you can move to Accepting. By Accepting, you have proven, through your words and actions, that you are beginning to understand your need for treatment and that you’re willing to put the work in. You should be able to “accept” feedback from staff and peers about your behavior and have become accountable for your behavior. You are beginning to consider causes for issues that have been a problem – as well as possible solutions. A Phase II resident should be demonstrating and role-modeling socially and programmatically acceptable behaviors. During this phase a resident will be expected to earn trust, build relationships, and progress on goals.
Upon entry into this Phase the expectations of Willing and Succeeding are your main focus. You lead with actions, not just words! Succeeding means you set a good example for other residents to follow. Maintaining your growth is one of the more difficult challenges you will face in treatment. Succeeding involves honesty, responsibility, accountability, and consistency in treatment over a significant period of time. Succeeding residents can identify and demonstrate appropriate coping skills on a consistent basis. Residents are expected to attend and participate in group therapy, individual counseling, case management, recovery coaching, and life skills groups. Succeeding residents will be expected to fill a leadership/mentor role within the community.
A client that is Phase 4 are consistently demonstrating and are living by the values and beliefs of a TC. A resident in Phase 4 has followed the rules of the program, have confronted negative peer behavior, as well as held peers accountable. This resident is living a program of recovery and is actively using a community-based support system, has a working knowledge of recovery and a recovery lifestyle, is actively working with a sponsor as well as being involved in the recovery community. Phase 4 clients are working full time, saving money and finalizing their discharge plans.
