About Abilene VA Clinic

West Texas VA Health Care System – Abilene CBOC provides multiple services in Abilene, Texas. Their outpatient rehab offers addiction and mental health care for Veterans and their families. You’ll benefit from tailored care from professionals who understand the unique experiences of military personnel.

Their program allows you to complete treatment without stepping away from your other responsibilities. You’ll have access to proven therapeutic interventions to help you overcome the battles of addiction and gain coping skills. Individual, group, and family counseling, along with medication assisted treatment, are available.

What stands out most to me are their therapy options. Along with motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral therapy, they offer motivational enhancement therapy. They use this approach to pinpoint why you desire to change and how it can be beneficial. I think the focus on integral motivation and self empowerment can resonate with many veterans’ experiences and values.

I also appreciate their variety of medication options to help you manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings. They account for the fact that what works for one person in recovery, may not work for another. You’ll have a truly personalized experience, knowing that there are many ways to reach recovery.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

bed-front iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

house-medical iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

hospital iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers intensive addiction treatment while allowing you to return home each day. It can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option. Depending on your needs, PHP treatment typically averages 90 days with a weekly requirement of 6-8 hours a day. PHP treatment offers a variety of therapeutic interventions such as individual counseling, group therapy, and psychoeducation. Oftentimes PHP treatment can be fully covered by insurance.

book-medical icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

house-medical iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

There are 2 components to their program: the administrative side, which prepares and serves meals and the clinical side, which provides nutrition therapy. They strive to combine the two in an effective way that will provide the greatest benefit to their patients. Monthly staff meetings, patient satisfaction surveys and meal rounds foster communication. The clinical dietitian and diet technician are the liaisons between the patients and the administrative portion of the service.

Creative Arts Therapy

Creative arts therapy focuses on creative processes. You may engage in sculpting, dancing, improv, painting, or sketching. These creative outlets provide an opportunity to explore and express difficult emotions.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Recreational Therapy

Addiction recovery treatment in Texas will offer recreational therapy in a holistic approach to treatment. Therapy incorporates enjoyable activities that support your physical and mental health, such as team sports, creative arts, or individual sports. This activity gives you an emotional outlet, reduces your stress, and improves your mood, each of which promotes long term sobriety.

Not your typical VA. Actually positive and openly communicate and keep to their word. They do actually care at this facility

The way I was raised was to never be so proud to admit when Im wrong and to always say Im sorry at least. Ive probably said it a million times. However, like many places these days, the VA has a big problem with that. Why ? I wrote a 28 page letter describing repeated harassment, threats, lies, discrimination, Labeling me, talking to me worst than trash andVerbal and physical abuse and more !!!After a long time, I received a really nice letter, kindly asking me not to raiseMy voice* !!! Not a single mention or validation of any complaints or just a simple IM SORRY FOR THE THINGSYOU HAVE UNJUSTLY BEEN THROUGH.I think this is very wrong!!! How can anyone. Including disabled veteransget any closure when not a single employee admits to that disabled veteran that they were wrong and a Simple IM SORRY !!! In closing, I want to say that there are a lot ofAbsolutely great employees at theAbilene VA Clinic, but there are quite a few employees, in my opinion that SHOULD NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH VETERANS AND SHOULD BE FIRED AND NEVER EVER ALLOWED BACK.IM VERY SORRY to any VA employee for anything I may had said or done wrong. I AM VERY VERY SORRY !!!

I cant imagine worse mental health care than I have received here. My service connected PTSD (100% disability rating) has been more triggered by their psychiatrists than 2 years homeless in the street. I dont think they have ever had an answer for any question Ive ever asked regarding my mental health or medical care. Its like pulling teeth to get documentation from Drs that are needed for disability. Care is not consistent between providers. Providers do not communicate. For medical care, Ive received much better medical care at urgent care. I would rather have no care than what they provide. I feel bad for the veterans who have to pay for this clinic. Its sad that Ill probably go back to being homeless for a chance at better mental health providers.

I generally do not have issues with the Abilene CBOC. If you actively participate and keep on top of your referrals, communicate what it is that you have tried and what you want, and keep track of what has and has not worked, your PCMs typically work with you. Ive had some hick-ups, but when my life has been on the line, the CBOC has jumped through hoops to make sure I was taken care of and taken care of by the best specialists available.I have had some complaints, but when Ive had them... they have been addressed. They arent perfect, but hey... its called medical practice for a reason.

Best VA clinic I have been to. The staff is friendly and caring.

If youre facing mental health problems dont waste your time with this place. Honestly, all of the offices here are sketchy and a review needs to be done to close this excuse for a facility down. Good luck getting anyone to call you back for an appointment. Instead they just close your appointment request, no phone calls or reasoning.

Most of the time, the staff does their best. The rest of the time, they really drop the ball. I have grown used to the hand holding. The facility does the staff zero favors. It is too small, underequipped, and theres too few staff compared to the number of veterans in this area. This is glaringly evident in the sheer number of community referrals they have to issue so you can get basic care. They can do VERY little here and appointments take hours. Changes are desperately needed.
