About West Oakland Health Council

West Oakland Health Council is a community based clinic in Oakland, California. Adults can access outpatient care and medication assisted treatment for mental health conditions and substance abuse. Their outpatient programs are specifically for those with referrals from their medical provider.

You’ll have access to individual therapy to work through the barriers hindering your recovery. They give you the tools to face these challenges head on while building coping skills to sustain sobriety. Additionally, you’ll benefit from care coordination. These services connect you with community resources and support for your recovery journey.

They tailor their medication assisted treatment toward people with opioid use disorder. This program provides group and individual counseling coupled with daily medication. You could be prescribed medications, like Suboxone or methadone, to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings and promote long term sobriety.

One thing I like about them is their specialty mental health care services. They provide flexible options in the office, at home, in the community, and during school visits. They have different programs for adults, children, and adolescents with moderate to severe mental health conditions. I think this option is super helpful, especially if you find traveling to and from treatment challenging.

I used to love this place. My old doctor at the Watson center was amazing but unfortunately she passed away so I was sent back to the East Oakland health center. Everything was going well until they changed to Baywell. Since then the appointments are being pushed out three months. The medical assistants give you misinformation and nobody seems to know anything. It s so unfortunate because I ve been coming here for 20 years. Now I have to switch my providers. The community will be the one to ultimately suffer behind whatever merger or whoever bought it. Do better Baywell

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.

Clinical Services

Individual therapy for drug addiction includes a customized treatment plan that considers your history and life circumstances. During your therapy sessions, the therapist helps you uncover underlying issues and triggers for addictive behavior that support a holistic approach to recovery.

During group therapy, men and women learn to express their emotions openly in a non judgmental setting. This helps you process your feelings and reduces feelings of social isolation that are often associated with addiction.

Everytime I come here for a dental appointment, they schedule me for a time they're on break, making me wait around for at least 15 minutes before the door unlocks.

Goering Health Initiative is perfect for the camp I mean clinic.Modern day study in eugenicsThe system, from head to toe is ineffectually inefficient and designed with a void of efficacy or results. Designed to gring down, no heal,The rebranding doesn't represent the experience as an autistic Jewish woman it's goerRebranding with a new name isn't changing the outcome of the sadistic willingness to give worse care then just no care from anyone. It's a meat grinder akin to gas chambers with the regular & unchecked sadistic & insanely reminiscent of my grandmothers older sisters journals from the Holocaust same abnormally harmful substandard care followed up by nothing but having your bony malnourished corpse rolled into a mass grave and never thought of again....Nothing is in favor or based around the patients wellbeing or concerns. They've had no excuses when I blatantly state of your too busy or spread too thin to take on a complex case please let me know now . Nope I wish I knew how much she gets paid for manslaughterThe folks at the desk are very kind and friendly while showing a lot of admirable patience. The "medical care" is extremely low & their protocol is ineffective, traumatic and they gaslight and blame you for taking up their time when they are simply functioning under protocols that are abnormal for anywhere else in the world. They put less than zero thought into their patients best interest and openly show hostility if you aren't smiling, silent and agreeing with whatever they do or say regardless of who's best interest is at stake . Unprofessional, overworked & audibly hateful . They have caused more harm and wasted more time than is healthy compared to never going. They ignored me (and apparently multiple people in the waiting area including one poor teenage boy who was shot and they kept making appointments, he'd show up and then theyd tell him he got it wrong and it made me and an older lady cry watching because that's all any of us are getting and he was so desperate for the care he was promised and received callous remarks, excuses and he eventually snapped by raising his voice and he was fully in the right with being pushed to the limit over and over and having the clinic blow him off and show no interest or concern for him and we all heard they just thought he was mistaken and dismissed him until he lost it emotionally which caused them to make it an issue about him being a threat vs a poor boy trying his best and being treated like a liar then an animal. We, in the waiting area all have that experience to different degrees and it's just, care for him opposed to calling him a liar in soft tones while pushing him into a corner to show what a dangerous person he is when regardless of who he is, we all felt he was so desperate for help and followed up like he was told then retraumatized as is the clockwork pattern of that unreliable and abelist clinic. I hope he's getting support at home if he's not allowed to get his rights fulfilled by the callous remarks and disorganization that is a hallmark of the West Oakland clinic.Don't accept new patients if the current situation is so bleak and ineffective that patients become annoyances in a cattle line fighting and struggling not to be slaughtered.Another man in the waiting room was devastated over the death of his daughter and was describing the same experience with dehumanizing people to the point of ignoring symptoms and letting a girl die due to being blown off . He was crushed. It was a terrible thing to hear his voice and see his grief. No one was confident about what their fate would be considering how many of us were experiencing the same negligence and then having it turned on us after injustice after injustice with no acknowledgement of accountability or recourse for the majority. If you just have a cold or need to grab a bandaid, go on in. If you need anything beyond that to legitimately live, be prepared for them to direct you into madness and an early grave. Dead patients tell no tales. Except for when they do.
