About Waukesha Department of Health and Human Services

Waukesha Department of Health and Human Services is in Waukesha, Wisconsin. The department offers a myriad of services, including outpatient mental health and substance use disorder treatment. To use any of the services, you’ll need to be a resident of Waukesha County. The State of Wisconsin certifies all of the programs.

They accept Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurance for mental health services. Depending on your ability to pay, they may compute the cost of some of the services based on the state’s guidelines for ability to pay. Even if you’re uninsured, you won’t be turned away.

You can get a regularly scheduled appointment Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You can also go to the walk-in clinic Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Appointments at the walk-in clinic aren’t pre-scheduled, so you may have to wait.

The substance use treatment includes individual and group therapy. If you have a co-occurring disorder such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or other mental health issue, you can also get medication assisted treatment. There’s an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for substance use treatment. An IOP consists of individual and group therapy. You’ll meet for a specific time throughout the week for therapy, substance use education, and aftercare planning.

There’s a special program for women called the Women’s Health and Recovery Project (WHARP). WHARP is for women with substance use whose needs are complex. Women often have obstacles that men don’t face when seeking help for substance use. You’ll have a peer specialist who works with you one on one. You don’t have to be involved in other Waukesha County services and there’s no cost.

The women’s program addresses behavioral health, education, employment, and employment preparation. A care coordinator can help with housing, childcare, transportation, and medical and dental needs. The programs are sensitive to gender, culture, and trauma. They work with you to overcome difficult and unexpected life events. You’ll learn how to build social skills and get connected to recovery services and resources in the community.

State agencies are not going to be ideal, but at least here the clinicians seem to really care and were helpful when I asked for alternative options when I needed help. The secretaries are always polite too!

Apparently 2 beers a day at the end of the day is enough to recommend treatment to my probation officer. When searching criteria for substance use disorder online it's very obvious I do not meet the criteria. In my opinion the lady who did my evaluation was not listening to everything I said and only cherrypicked what suited her agenda.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients' long-term recovery through highly customized wraparound care aligned with clients' evolving needs. Most have been sober for a period of weeks or longer and have completed intensive inpatient rehab but may be receiving outpatient care. Many clients also receive services after being discharged from formal treatment. Long-term care plans are typically developed in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team and may include peer coaching, relapse prevention, and related services.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers short-term intensive care for drug and alcohol addiction. Often part of a step-down service, PHP treatment allows you to attend treatment on-site during the day, then return home during non-treatment hours. Plans of care typically include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services. Depending on your progress, the duration of a PHP can average 90 days with daily sessions running 4-8 hours per week. Most insurance providers fully or partially cover PHP treatment.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

The goal of drug rehab in Wisconsin is to address drug addiction as a complex issue that involves physical, mental, and relational aspects. During rehab, treatment focuses on each of these areas and gives you the tools you need to achieve and maintain sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

As a form of substance use treatment, cognitive behavioral therapy in Wisconsin offers several advantages. The duration of this talk therapy is typically 20 sessions or less, so it can be more affordable, with quicker results. It's also offered in multiple formats, so it can be tailored to meet individual needs.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

When conducting motivational interviewing in Wisconsin, therapists engage with their clients as equal partners. They don't provide unsolicited advice or confront clients. Instead, they ask questions and listen, with the goal of empowering clients to recognize any need for change and their ability to make those changes.

Trauma therapy gives you the opportunity to understand and manage the emotional and physical responses that often follow witnessing or experiencing a traumatic event. Working with an experienced and trained therapist, you can process the events of the trauma and develop healthier coping strategies to reduce your symptoms.

During couples therapy, you will engage in activities that promote forgiveness, healthy communication, and understanding. You'll receive "homework" to practice these skills during the week between sessions. Couples therapy typically lasts around 12 weeks.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Addiction treatment in Wisconsin emphasizes life skills training to help you relearn critical capabilities for day to day life. This training helps you build healthy, positive strategies for everything from self care, to career, to interpersonal relationships.

A lot of bad reviews about this place but personally I've had good experiences there over the years. There was maybe one person over the more than a decade that I've been involed with that wasn't so great but everyone else was pretty nice~

Dr Christen is a completely incompetent and under qualified psychiatrist. If he actually listened to his patients instead of himself he would be fine, but all he does is listen to himself talk. I m extremely surprised he s gotten anywhere in his career , and it doesn t surprise me that he s forced to work at a county ran facility. He is completely useless in the fact of dealing with addiction, or mental health. His recommendations were based completely on his own beliefs, and not at all on that of his patients. Hopefully WHHS realizes their mistake in his hire (a few months ago) and fires him, however doubtful because their program is completely flawed without his inexperience. If you re looking for a place to get help, THIS IS NOT IT. Hope this helps someone.

They treat people with illnesses like animals. No respect. It's like living in a jail cell. You are a nobody to these people. You don't get the help you need. No matter how hard you try to work with the staff they still treat you like lowlife. You are stripped of your human dignity. Please Do not send your loved one to this place. There are better facilities in the metro area to send your loved one or get treated at around the milwaukee metro area. It's all about the money for these places. Even though it's funded by the county. Its hell on earth at thus faculty.
