About American Fork Family Clinic | Wasatch Behavioral Health

Wasatch Mental Health Center - Outpatient is one of several locations across Utah within the Wasatch Behavioral Health network. This American Fork Family Clinic in American Fork, Utah, is an outpatient clinic for behavioral health and mental health issues. These issues can include challenges from addiction to trauma to depression.

The treatment here is personalized to you and what you need rather than being a structured and predeveloped treatment program. You’ll have one on one therapy to work with your therapist on developing the skills and the healing you need for recovery while also working through issues that affect your addiction. There’s group therapy, too, based around specific topics and behavioral health challenges like anger management and parenting skills. Along with this, you’ll also develop the skills to manage your behavioral health and maintain your recovery, such as coping skills and relapse prevention strategies.

As noted, this is an outpatient therapy office rather than a structured addiction treatment program. If you prefer a program like that they do have this at their clinics in Provo and Heber. The outpatient clinic offers more of an individualized approach with the addition of peer support as needed. They have family therapy here, too, and case management to help you coordinate your care throughout your recovery.

I'm sad at how complicated it is to have intake or first visits to get help . Sometimes people come here in crisis because they can't handle the psych ward. I can't imagine how many people are no longer with us because of the hoops and loops this place has for patients . I'm really disappointed. It should be way easier to see somebody and get help asap instead of specific dates and times . It makes zero sense .

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Addiction treatment at an inpatient rehab center is significantly more intensive than outpatient and community-based care. Clients remain at the facility for the duration of their program, though many centers offer supervised group excursions. Inpatient treatment typically consists of extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling. Many programs also prioritize addiction education and recovery-focused life skills training. Holistic therapies, such as yoga, art therapy, EMDR, and meditation, are commonly available as well.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving services in a rehab aftercare program have generally been stable and sober for a period of weeks and months and no longer require high intensity treatment. Many have stepped down from inpatient rehab to outpatient treatment. Others have been discharged from formal treatment but need support in maintaining their sobriety. Clients typically work with their case manager and care team to develop a long-term care plan that aligns with their unique needs and goals.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers intensive treatment to those with moderate to severe addictions while allowing them to return home. It is often an alternative to inpatient hospitalization and a "step-down" option from residential programs. PHP treatment is tailored to your needs and lasts an average of 90 days. Weekly sessions are up to 8 hours for 5 days a week and can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services. The cost of PHP treatment varies but is often fully or partially covered by providers.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Medical detox is the safest way to remove addictive substances from your body under the care of medical professionals. In an inpatient environment, you'll be monitored 24/7 by doctors, nurses, and clinical experts, who will help keep you as safe and comfortable as possible and administer medication if needed to treat any withdrawal symptoms. The process may take up to a week or longer depending on your needs, and is often at least partially covered by insurance.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

They were really amazing, my therapist was so in tune with all my necessities, he really knew what I was feeling when I didn't know yet how to express it. This has been the greatest place to work with, they are very understanding.

EDIT: I've had a few bad experiences here. The worst was when I was recommended to see someone who specialized in trauma only to hear from them that religious trauma is a "buzzword" and that trauma is something only sexual assault victims and veterans experience. From the person I was recommended to see for my religious trauma. They've done some construction and now the lobby is very nice with lots of space. I've been receiving amazing care from my therapist here. Would definitely recommend.

I saw Lanice Hollingsworth and she was terrible. My prior therapist here was great. She really helped me and I always felt positive after our appointments. In general my experience with WBH has been pretty good for the most part. My experience with Lanice was horrible however. I was refered to her to work on my trauma through EMDR. Our first appointment she started to push going to church on me even though I am not religious and have had traumatic experiences with the LDS church. She frequently made hurtful comments and seemed to be judging things I said, which made me feel uncomfortable opening up to her. On one occasion she said I functioned like a 5 year old. If I brought up a traumatic experience she would instantly jump to pushing me to do emdr during that appointment without first making sure I was mentally prepared for it, or teaching me any coping skills to help me regulate my anxiety. Our final appointment was terrible. I hadn't seen her in a few months due to scheduling conflicts on both our parts. When I came in for our appointment she had her foot resting on the couch next to me, and asked how my recent vacation was. I told her it was good but brought up something that was bothering me. Again she jumped right into trying to do emdr and I told her I was uncomfortable with that. I could tell that made her angry and she told me if I wasn't going to do EMDR then she couldn't see me as a client anymore. I was fine with that and told her I didn't think EMDR was the right kind of therapy for me and that I didn't want to waste either of our time, and that I thought I needed ERP therapy for my OCD instead. She then went into a rant about how "great" of a therapist she was, and that she had just came back from Alaska where she did some training or conference and had done training with the Alpine School district. She also told me not to "waste my money" on another therapist. She then referred me to do DBT group therapy in provo, knowing I was unable to go all the way to provo due to not having a baby sitter at that time which I told her. I left that appointment in tears. Her final email to me reads as follows. "You are more than welcome to return to individual therapy at anytime. When you feel you are ready to take part and participate, let me know. I would be happy to make arrangements for you - with me or with someone else."This after telling me not to waste my money on another therapist. I was reluctant to leave this review but the fact I'm still thinking about it 2 years later shows how awful and traumatic my experience with her was. I personally not recommend her specifically.

I was very hesitant to come here based on the reviews but it was the only place my insurance would cover, and I needed help so I gave it shot. I was honestly surprised how well I was treated and how kind and patient the staff are. I ve worked with two of the therapists so far and both of them have been amazing. Things are very confusing at first due to the intake process, but they really try their best to make things go as smoothly as possible. I personally recommend this place and I ve been very pleased with my experience.

This place has been terrible to work with. They make appointments and then close your file so you have to redo the intake. Then when you call and complain, they backstep and tell you it was a misunderstanding. The only thing reliable is they're inconvenient inconsistent difficult way of doing things. Its disrespectful to their clients and hurts people. What's worse, they promise help is there and it's not. Find someplace else. It may save your life.
