About Volunteers of America Fresh Start Recovery Center – Indianapolis

Volunteers of America Fresh Start Recovery Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, is a faith based nonprofit organization helping people rebuild their lives and reach their potential. They work with veterans, families and individuals who need mental health and substance abuse recovery services. They also work with people experiencing homelessness and those reentering their communities after being incarcerated.

They help veterans with employment and housing and provide family services like counseling, transportation, help with daily needs and legal advice. They also help veterans with childcare needs, financial planning and suicide prevention.

Fresh Start also provides help with substance use disorder and mental health treatment. These services are centered around family focused recovery, outpatient treatment and a program for men in the criminal justice system. Their criminal justice reentry program offers case management services, substance abuse counseling, individual and group counseling, skill development, job training and referrals within the community.

One client and veteran said the recovery center helped them with necessities when they were about to be evicted. Another person said the place was a Godsend and gave them their life back.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Persons who require high-level support but who do not wish to leave their homes or communities may enroll in an intensive outpatient program (IOP). Clients typically commit to a minimum of nine treatment hours across three therapeutic sessions per week, but many programs offer up to 20 hours of care weekly. Most intensive outpatient rehabs provide a combination of psychotherapy, recovery education, and holistic care. Medication assisted treatment (MAT) is widely available for those in alcohol or opioid recovery.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program have completed inpatient care and may also be preparing to exit formal outpatient care. Outpatient services are typically categorized as rehab aftercare, but these services often continue beyond the cessation of formal treatment. Rehab aftercare services are designed to promote life-long recovery through comprehensive, wraparound care, which may include medical, mental health, and social services. These programs are usually created in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

When families plan a drug intervention in Indiana, the goal is to create self-awareness in their loved one, so they acknowledge the need for treatment and get help. A professional interventionist can work with the individual's family members to organize this intervention and provide direction for follow-up. During the intervention, loved ones share how the individual's substance abuse has affected them, and the interventionist adds a clinical perspective on how treatment can help the situation.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing aims to stimulate the client's personal motivation and commitment to change. Rather than receive advice and warnings from the therapist, the client is given the opportunity to share their concerns and reach their own conclusions.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills include cognitive skills, interpersonal skills, and personal skills that help you manage daily living. Cultivating these skills during rehab in Indiana is an important part of recovery. With these skills, you'll be able to navigate challenges and prevent relapse.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy integrates structured activities into a holistic treatment program to help promote your physical and mental health and well being. You might engage in sports, creative arts, or outdoor adventures as a positive outlet for your stress and emotions. This helps you develop new interests and build a supportive network that helps you maintain long term sobriety.

This industry has always been there for me and still here for me now. I am a veteran that was about to be evicted and had hard time getting the necessities until I called them. I talk to 5 other industries and they were the first to pickup their phone and helped me with all my issues the best to their ability. I don t regret calling them. They are the best that I know of. Thank you.

Being i stayed 74 days. The groups were helpful I learned alot ive been sober going on 6 months. It was after group when you are upstairs its dirty.. The staff were the most Unprofessional people I've ever met. Example: a supervisor was on the phone with a man while i had to take a drug test in the bathroom.. SO RUDE.. They would let women attend group while being high.. ATLEAST HAVE THEM GO TO THEIR ROOM.. The worse part was everyday there was a new rule.. The most unconsistentt place I've ever been. Sometimes the staff didnt even know what was going on because there was no Communication From the head lady who ran the place.. Needs alot of improvement.. And these place could be really amazing... GOOD LUCK TO WHO EVER IS GOING THERE.

This place is okay. We are suppose to have two groups a day in the fresh start program. Clinical group and parenting group. The clinical group is very helpful but we dont even do the parenting group half the time because they are understaffed. Theres very poor communication and they are very unorganized. Its helpful to get sober but thats about ir. They are suppose to help with housing but your better off doing all that on your own or you'll be here for months there are some things i like about it and alot of things i dont so im kind of in the middle with this place. I would reccomend going if you have an open dcs case. You can have up to 2 children with you under age 5 so thats pretty cool. Theres alot of small stuff you can get in trouble for right now because of Covid. Like not wearing a mask or eating in the dayroom so that cn screw up your program if you forget those things so I dont like that

My experience was VERY beneficial. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet some of these people. When I was in the darkest days of my addiction, I remember just wanting to be "normal again". I didn't know who I was anymore... VOA helped me, help myself (if that makes any sense?) Staff aren't there to cater to you, this place isn't going to be a vacation and you will be stepping outside of your comfort zone but I promise it'll all be 100% worth it in the end. I suggest you use your time wisely. The choices you make while at VOA should be in preparation for your life after you leave. They'll give you the tools to do so but be prepared to put in the work! Try to keep an open mind and be respectful. RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. However, as common as it may sound, IT ONLY WORKS IF YOU WORK IT. Never give up on yourself!
