About Johnson Mental Health Center

Volunteer Behavioral Health’s Johnson Mental Health Center provides mental health and addiction recovery services for children, adolescents, and adults in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Their services include crisis stabilization, outpatient programs, as well as aftercare support. Specialized services are available for veterans and members of the military, clients involved in the criminal justice system, and clients with co-occurring conditions. Telehealth appointments are available.

Their outpatient services help clients better understand and work through the underlying, psychological aspects of their addictions. Typical services are more intensive in scope and frequent in duration than their general outpatient treatments. A team of multi-disciplinary providers works closely with each client to create a customized treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. Available services include individual, group, and family counseling, psychiatric medication management, psychological and psychosexual evaluations, and addiction-focused education.

They provide a complete continuum of care to ensure that you have access to the resources they need for long-term recovery success post-treatment. As needed, providers can connect you with community-based entities that offer services such as rental assistance, transitional housing, vocational training, and other forms of help.

They’re in-network with most forms of private insurance. Out of network benefits can vary so contact your individual provider to verify coverage. They’re also accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. Services include individual, couples, family and group therapy. Outpatient treatment services address mental health conditions, addiction and co-occurring disorders. These services are available at each location throughout VBHCS.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients in intensive outpatient programs (IOP) receive robust, personalized care to support their reintegration into their community. Clients stepping down from inpatient treatment frequently enroll in IOP before entering standard outpatient care or community-based recovery programs, such as AA. Intensive outpatient treatment generally involves between nine and 20 therapeutic hours weekly, with the frequency and duration of sessions decreasing as clients stabilize. IOP services commonly include counseling, recovery education, holistic therapies, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
To keep you safe and comfortable during the detoxification process, a medically assisted detox provides you with a team of medical professionals who can provide the necessary medications to treat any potential withdrawal symptoms. Suddenly stopping chronic abuse of substances like alcohol, benzodiazepines, or opioids can have uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Addiction Recovery Program provides recovery-oriented support for individuals with addiction or co-occurring disorders. Services include individual and group formats for relapse prevention and recovery skills development.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I'm so sorry to hear how negative some have felt about the environment here but I have had quite the opposite experience, of course everyone is not friendly and people get jods that they do not like, are rude etc, but I have been client here for maybe 10+ years and the overall experience has been a great one.. The staff are engaging treats me with dignity and respect as well as respects my privacy. Every experience may not be a good one but for the most part it's a positive one.

Do not go here for med provider.. They never listen to you, over medicate or put you on meds that makes you sleep all day. When you ask for a new med provider because the current one you see will not listen to you they refuse to give you new provider.. I ONLY recommend going there for counseling because the therapist are all very nice and they actually listen to you

Supposed to be able to have an in-house crisis unit where you can come and go when you please but the problem is on a Sunday they're supposed to be 24/7 if you call them during a crisis say say you want to kill yourself they tell you that you can call them on a Sunday but it's been two Sundays in a row that they let the phone ring and connect you just to the automated system and then you press the prices button and it just hangs up

Going here currently and here's my experience. Case managers don't return phone calls. They want to experiment with established medication regimens without any good explanation. Especially when asked directly . Giving contradictory information by RN who couldn't even be bothered to come into the office. All in all an unsatisfactory experience and I'm 42 years old with a lifetime of experience with mental health care. This is the worst facility I have ever been to in 30 years of treatment . Do not go here expecting results . Even if you get them it's more than likely it was a coincidence than any effort on their part. Apparently they don't even bother to get your previous medical records before they start attempting to diagnose and change your medical treatment . I write this today going through a serious case of mania and doing all I can to hold on to sanity. Thanks for absolutely nothing Johnson . Especially nurse Kelly .Update; they refused to change my nurse and the only thing they've done with a calendar month is make excuses to cover her mistakes on the first appointment. A full month later and they've only just now got my medical records from the last care provider even though that last care provider sent them some time ago . Now they're claiming I failed a drug test for fentanyl and I bought a home drug test and it says they're lying or at least their test made a mistake . Anyone who's ever been to a state care provider already knows what a slight fail on a drug test means . Most likely it's environmental or it's a mistake with the test but of course they're not going to do that second test because they're just worried about covering their butts. I did my own test and it says they're wrong / lying . They're upset because they've been called out publicly and now they're embarrassed. They refuse to switch the RN who is obviously discriminating for what reasons I can only guess . This would be the same nurse that only finished what she should have done on the 1st appointment on the second appointment a full month later. This place is extremely unprofessional and lackadaisical . They have no true concern for any patient in the facility. Like most people who claim they want to help people in our positions are they really want to do is get home Friday and get away from us. They don't really want to help and their actions prove it. If this job didn't come with the government paycheck they would have already been gone

I'm giving 3 stars only because I have a good therapist and a good NP (after having several others) now but I have to do my appointments by phone because I have severe OCD. The problem with that is that I had an appointment today at 9:30 and they called 22 minutes early! They've done this before and it's not good! Today I especially needed to talk to her but I missed the call, of course. I had set my alarm so I'll be ready (as I always do) for the call 15 minutes early just in case. My anxiety has been worse lately, the anxiety medicine isn't working so I really needed to talk to her! I called the office and they said she's already on another call! I said you called me 22 minutes early! She said yes, that patients need to be ready for the call an hour before the appointment until an hour after the appointment! So apparently they expect us to be next to our phones if your appointment is at 9:30, from 8:30 until possibly 10:30! Seriously?!!! Then why do you set a time? They also call from a different number every...single...time! So I don't even know if it's them.I guess they don't think we have things we have to do. I have several things I have to do every morning so I even tried to get it all done so I'd be ready for the call, things that can't wait!!! (and I was ready at 9:15!) So now my anxiety is even worse!!! And who knows when I'll get another appointment! Also I've actually had a former (asked for a new one)NP who actually insulted me! She said she'd get me on a medication that worked for me before but when I went back she hadn't talked to the administrators to see if they could let me get it like she said she would. When I started crying, she insulted me by saying "maybe it's your personality"! Then she caught herself and quickly looked at her computer and said maybe you have borderline personality! It's not her job to diagnose me, my therapist does that! When I went to see him next I asked him if she told him about her diagnosis and he said no! I absolutely had no doubt from the minute she said that that she was trying to cover her a$$ after she insulted me! If things don't get better there I'm going to have to go somewhere else. I should have a long time ago but I do like my therapist. I strongly suggest to anyone, however, that you should run if you have any problems with them. This is our mental health and we don't need any more abuse and being treated badly which is probably why many of us are there in the first place.

Diana's IOP class was amazing! She taught me manyforms of recovery techniques, from getting to the root of my using issues, meditation, tapping techniques - the list goes on as to how she's extremely educated in the field of recovery. I learned so much about myself and new coping mechanisms! Thank you Diana and Joe Johnson!!

Only go here if you want your mental health to plummet. I m discontinuing getting treatment Joe Johnson for a few reasons. 1. My medication is never filled at an adequate time frame at my pharmacy. The drs never even approve my refills half the time. 2. I started here to get treated for my adhd & it s been months still no records have been obtained from my previous doctor who prescribed them when I was an adolescent & no further talk of it has happened. 3. I feel like my needs are being neglected, I persistently asked for a different doctor other than the one I have now. They told me I was be getting said new doctor. It was the same one nothing changed. 4. The doctor that s treating me is not having all my prescriptions called into the pharmacy. She told she was going to prescribe me medication for my psychosis symptoms last appointment, never got the medication even reached out to the facility about it & it s been a month still nothing. These are just some of my concerns with them but I don t feel like Joe Johnson takes adequate care of their patients mental health & overall well-being.
