My experience was a little more 50-50 than most on here, I was there for 8 days, and I found the techs and nurses to be actually pretty damn wonderful - I was on both 2a and 3a throughout my stay. Now as for the doctors? In 8 days i spent a grand total of maybe 6 minutes with my assigned psychiatrist (Dr Hirsch) who stripped me off of all of my medication and put me onto withdrawal medication (I was there for anxiety and have never had a drug problem, or used them for that matter) for 3 days before also taking me off that and leaving me on ineffective meds that I told him (daily during my 30 seconds of time with him) that were absolutely not working. The tech staff on both floors was awesome - the facility is OK for what it is and the food is actually pretty good at times. I thought the nurses were wonderful on both floors - although they need to fix their second elevator sometimes as a group getting to the cafeteria took forever in and of itself. All in all, get rid of the bum doctors who dont listen and dont care, find docs who care as much as the support staff do. I didnt hate my stay, but I hated my doctorOh my god and FFS get beds that dont destroy backs sweet mother of god

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Do not send a loved one here at all costs, and if any family member has had a loved one here and they have damage from a blood draw, seek medical attention. My godson told me after the first blood draw from an elderly man who he said wasn't American but didn't know the nationality, which that doesn't make a difference, just trying to describe the man, drew blood he felt an electric shock like feeling and refused to let him take blood anymore, now has nerve damage to his arm. He had been complaining since August of pain in his right arm but never showed me the knots nor that he was having trouble grasping things without tremendous pain. I took him to his PCP after a blood draw where the phlebotomist felt the knots and told me he needed to see his doctor, they were even unable to get blood from that arm. His PCP stated she believes he has severe nerve damage and has referred him to see a neurologist. My godson told me this man did this to many, many others while he was there. I was called and told he was refusing his blood draws, I told them no, he was refusing for the same man to draw his blood, he would gladly let someone else. He has great veins as documented by his medical providers so how this happened is beyond me. I told him to let staff know his arm was hurting, which he did, but no one bothered to check him out or do anything. This is completely unacceptable!! How many others have had this done to them, I'm sure quite a few. He sees his neurologist Monday. I'm praying for the best Shame on this place for the poor treatment of the people who are there for help!! There were many more issues such as a nurse bullying him telling him his mom should have suffocated him when he was born because he was tired of freezing everyday, it is on camera with this nurse being in his face, is this how this facility believes is acceptable saying things like this is going to actually help someone in a crisis? All of that stuff I just brushed off but this damage to his arm from someone who clearly should retire is something he is going to have to deal with for a long time, if not for the rest of his life! I spoke with Shari and told her these bad reviews are spot on, she stated that no one would want to give a good review at a psych facility, seriously? I see a few here and I've read reviews from a local facility that has over 4 stars with excellent reviews. He already has a lot to deal with and now another issue caused by an incompetent phlebotomist, I assume he was qualified, truly don't know but my godson has had many, many blood draws and has not once had any issues until being at this place!

I was sent to this hospital from the emergency room in Bolingbrook with no option to go here. I have a severe gluten and nut allergy and the facility could not handle my food allergies. Every meal I was given boiled chicken and nothing else with it (sometimes I was lucky and I got a potato with it). They were serving peanut butter and jelly sandwiches as snacks on the unit without cleaning anything and did not care that I had such a sever allergy to nuts. They just told me to stay in my room and not come out to the common area as a solution. The doctor did not care that I was getting mistreated with my food allergies. He also kept me there for 19 days and took me off all of my medication rather than just adjust it all. Eventually with enough people calling and complaining about my food situation they bought me chipotle to make it right for one meal. While I was on the unit my roommate was having sex in the room, there were many fights going on, and the staff did not care about anything except the times we were forced to be in our rooms throughout the day. I would never suggest this hospital as it just makes things worse. If I could I'd give it zero stars.

After leaving this place I wanted to kill myself more than when I got there. I have multiple physical pain conditions with my spine and nerves and they kept threatening me that if I didn't get up and do my activities then I wouldn't get discharged. I tried to tell them over and over again that my nerve condition flares up and I have to rest at times after too much sitting and movement but they kept threatening me that I wouldn't get discharged. The nurse that gives out the medicine was shouting at patients just for trying to talk to her. After being in there almost 6 total days my social worker told me I that I would be going home in a couple days. Then the next day a different social worker brings me into a room and tells me that I'm not going home for at least a few more days and starts asking me about drug hallucinations among other things. I told her I have no idea what she is talking about. I got mad after I left the room and found my original social worker who then went and talked to the other social worker. They admitted that I was the wrong patient they brought into the room. The social worker was talking to me for 10 to 15 minutes with someone else's files and when I told her that the stuff she is saying to me must be about someone else she didn't listen and kept talking about the other person's file to me. Then the social worker didn't even apologize and ignored me after that. I was in there from having suicidal ideation due to severe pain and they kept telling me I had to work on my attitude while the staff treated the patients like prisoners. I'm not sure if they understand what the word projection means. The culture there is the last place someone should be around when they have suicidal ideation. Do not send your loved ones with psychiatric issues here either because from what I saw I don't think it can be good for them.

I wish I could give this place negative stars. No one deserves to be sent here. I was inpatient a few weeks ago, and so many of my rights were violated and we contacted the patient advocate and still nothing was done about this. Examples: the nurses do not give proper or any info when dispensing medication, I got a shot of medication dispensed in my thigh when the med guide literally has graphics of the shot administration only in the deltoid or gluteus, the staff is incredibly beyond rude and does not care at all, the food is horrible I didn t eat multiple days because I was vegetarian and there wouldn t be food that I could eat, the doctors barely come to see you, the phone time isn t even guaranteed and very short to talk to your loved ones. Lake Behavioral is quite literally like prison. Even the outdoor appearance of it is poor. I feel bad for any patient who goes here because I know the treatment is horrible. DO BETTER. MENTALLY ILL PEOPLE DO NOT DESERVE THIS KIND OF TREATMENT.

Things that happened while I was at LBH- I was not given medications for 4 days despite experiencing discontinuation symptoms- I was put into a drug unit (4A) despite never having tried drugs. They had me transfer to Lake from Northwestern because northwestern didn t have room in their general unit. Well, neither did Lake.- I was forced to take someone else s medications for withdrawals, even though I have never tried drugs.- they did not allow any visitors. They kept saying I would meet with a social worker and could arrange visits then, but the social worker would shut it down and change the subject- I did not meet a psychiatrist once while I was there- there is no 1 on 1 therapy- the groups are run by techs that are clearly not qualified- the patient advocate wrote down that I was given someone else s medications and then never followed up- the phone time is more limited than any hospital I ve ever been to, and is also not even guaranteed- they lost my list of phone numbers so I could not contact anyone for 2 days- they don t have paper scrubs, so if no one brings you clothes you are left with a sh*tty hospital gown- they do not allow people to discharge AMA, and also force people to stay 7-10 days whereas most inpatient facilities are anywhere from 3-7 days- when I finally got transferred to residential, it was by Uber, and they tracked me the entire way there. They didn t let me eat before a 1.5 hour drive and didn t let me order the Uber myself so I could stop somewhere and eat.- shoutout to Teresa the tech tho for buying the general unit snacks after I got transferred down there. Her groups were a lil unhinged but she was the only worker that seemed to give a crap about the patients.

This place sucked the treatment was horrible the office service sucked they didn't even call my parent for discharge and the intake process was horrible in terms of questioning this place is genuinely horrible and I do not recommend going here whatsoever even as a last resort take my information to heart if your planning on sending your loved one here they will most likely harm themselves more and most likely kill themselves after multiple stays.

While there are many negative reviews for this facility; I would like to provide quite the opposite. When a loved one is in need of psychiatric care, you want to feel comfortable with where they will be. I feel like in these particular instances, there is always one person who goes above and beyond your expectations. This person for me is named Carie Pasenelli. Carie is by far one of the most efficient, effective, and resourceful human being that I have encountered in the medical field. Hands down, from our initial convo, she transparently shared her suggested best alternatives. She provided exceptional follow up on my family s inquiries regarding our loved one and it was so reassuring as a patient advocate to experience this level of care. Lastly, what really set Carie apart is the fact that she extended her time and resources to us after my loved one was transferred out of her facility. That is rare to experience and exactly why she is not only an asset to Lake Behavioral but great reflection of a facility that appears to be lackluster. Lake Behavioral is far from that and we appreciate the care they provided.
