About Visions Teen Residential Treatment

Visions Adolescent Treatment Center is a teen addiction treatment facility that specializes in dual diagnosis care for adolescents with co-occurring addiction and mental illness. They’re located in Malibu, California and they provide residential care.

They offer ten beds at this location which makes for a low patient to staff ratio. I view this as a positive, because it means you’ll receive more attentive care than at a larger facility. They describe their campus as scenic, overlooking the beautiful hills of northern Malibu.

Through therapy, medication, and continued care, you can expect a lot from Visions and their team of medical professionals. Their location has a large garden that can help you feel calm and comforted while you pursue treatment and recovery. They have a holistic approach to therapy, and seek to achieve results through a combination of medication, therapy, and appropriate adjunct programs. The average length of stay is 45 to 90 days.

You’ll participate in experiential therapies and develop recovery focused life skills to teach you how to cope, make healthy decisions, and maintain your wellness and sobriety. Former clients have praised the program, with one person calling it a “sanctuary of healing.” Some complain though that the care wasn’t up to standard.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. Visions Outpatient Wellness Center provides services ranging from private practice therapy to intensive outpatient programming. The center provides a relationally based, clinical program to meet client objectives on an individual, group and family basis. This level of care is often the introduction to the therapy process or a continuing care option for adolescents and their families.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements. The structure at Visions Residential is a safe, supportive, intensive program filled with daily activities that help the resident come to terms with their problems and begin to make positive choices that will lead them to a healthy and productive life. Variations in length of stay determined by severity of symptom profile, psychosocial stressors, and global assessment of functioning upon intake and admission and during course of treatment. Visions residential treatment facilities embody a quiet and supportive environment. Tucked away in the hills of Malibu, their facilities sit on 25 acres of land nestled in the utmost privacy and comfort. Latigo, their Mediterranean Style home, creates a feeling of nurturance and growth. Mulholland, their original facility, is a comfortable home-like setting. Each facility offers residents a safe, rural surrounding with remote access to the public. Their staff is supportive and their landscape sets the tone for a healthy, rigorous atmosphere.

aftercare iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs offer clients in addiction recovery a robust continuum of care after clients have completed active treatment. These services address recovery as a life-long process and are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs. Clients may partner with their case managers and/or addiction recovery team to identify the rehab aftercare services that are right for them. They may receive career counseling, housing assistance, peer coaching, 12 step program induction, among many other services.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

During the first phase of recovery – detox – it is crucial to have 24-hour clinical care in California. This care provides constant monitoring in order to ensure your safely and comfort as you progress through the withdrawal process for drug or alcohol addiction. Licensed professionals prescribe medications to treat withdrawal symptoms and provide frequent monitoring to ensure your safely as addictive toxins leave your system.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

equine-therapy iconEquine Therapy

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

nutritional-therapy iconNutritional Therapy

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

The goal of nicotine replacement therapy in California is to mitigate the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. It cuts down on your cravings by supplying a small dose of nicotine without exposing your body to the toxins of cigarette smoke.

I was at Visions for over 100 days in 2022. While it carried challenges, as all programs and facilities do, I truly felt home there. Visions helped me beyond belief, and the staff (from therapists to techs to powers-that-be and more) were a crucial part in how I got to where I am now. I am endlessly thankful for Visions and everything they do.

I was sent voluntarily to Visions in January of 2021, I was 17 years old and incredibly vulnerable. During my first day I was left unattended in my room with no instructions so I decided to take a walk around the house and get a sense of where everything is, I was reprimanded for "attempting to run" and all of my shoes were confiscated. I wasn't allowed to see pictures of my family, nor write or draw in any of my journals until I reached "level one" despite writing and drawing being my only healthy coping mechanisms. I never reached level one. I very nearly made an attempt on my life while there, and when I went to the staff for help, they put me on "arms length" for nearly 24 hours until they finally took me to an emergency room. Once I was checked in, they left me alone in a hospital room, where I stayed for 24 hrs. Only contacting my parents by a phone at the nurses desk 13 hrs in, who seemed to have no idea I was there. I will never forget how I was treated during my time here, and my heart goes out to everyone else who survived this scam of a treatment center.

Our daughter is now four years out from her time at Visions in-patient treatment at the Mental Health House in Malibu. With immense gratitude and confidence I can say that Visions saved her life and changed our families trajectory. We are from Texas and were referred to Visions after our daughters stabilization at The Menninger Clinic in Houston. Looking back it still feels tender and very scary when I consider what led us to Visions. But without a doubt the process was as seamless, supportive, and filled with kindnesses as possible. Leaving our hurting and shattered child in the care of people we had only briefly met was not easy in any aspect. However, from our first phone call to drop off, John Lieberman was the epitome of professionalism. He provided compassion and helped my husband and I feel seen, supported and confident in our decision. As our daughter progressed through the program with ups, setbacks, downs and eventually steady progress, Ian Hogue, her primary therapist, was the key for her to be able to do the work she needed to do. Don't get me wrong, the wisdom of Visions leadership to pair Ian with our daughter was not initially clear. But after our first family weekend, the wisdom was quite clear. Ian's role now as a Parent Coach is definitely well lived and deserved. Visions helped us transition home to an IOP in our area that was just as thoughtful as it was excellent. After completing IOP and finishing her senior year in high school she went to college about an hour and a half away. She was able to and is still now seeing her original therapist. Please don't misunderstand, it hasn't been all rainbows and butterflies since her time at Visions four years ago. There have been ups, downs, pretty tough setbacks and even deeper growth for our daughter as well as for myself and my husband. And what is also a constant is how very thankful we are for our decision to take Menninger's recommendation to go to Visions Adolescent Treatment Center in Malibu. As a crazy side note, our daughter was at the house in Malibu for 5 days before the wildfires required evacuation. The team at Visions stayed in touch with us almost on an hourly basis. They had a contingency plan in place that allowed for uninterrupted treatment. Eventually there was a relocation to just as amazing a facility as the one in Topanga Canyon. Huge kudos for great planning and calm steady leadership during an unprecedented natural disaster.

The parent support group at Visions has been incredibly helpful and meaningful as my daughter has been in treatment. Visions supports not just the child in treatment but the whole family and continues the support even after the child leaves the treatment center. Amanda at visions is very resourceful, kind and available. And Amy H the therapist who moderates the parent support is a compassionate and understanding person who provides so much support for parents dealing with kids in various stages of recovery and sobriety. Visions is full of caring and supportive people.

I m sure this place has helped people that it s appropriate for, but this was not my case here.I was sent here for addiction I didn t have, and then knowing this, they kept me here for my rich parents money and ignored my needs. I came from an abusive family and told my therapist here many times that I was physically, emotionally, and sexually abused at home by my father, and they never mandatory reported to CPS, effectively breaking multiple laws. I came in for an alleged marijuana addiction, however my use was not daily and I did not exhibit most symptoms for addiction. Even though my correct diagnoses have been found to be unrelated to addiction and risky behaviors due to abuse at home, and my psychoanalysis and UA at Visions all would point to this, not to mention the constant cries for help at home pleading that I wasn t experiencing addiction, and that I was being abused by my father, they ignored all of these cries and proceeded to take me through exactly what my parents wanted me to do as a gaslighting tactic. It s perfect, you re not abused you re just crazy, and Visions went along with this concept for my parents money. I ended up suffering from Stockholm syndrome, and had to eventually believe I was an addict to go home, just to be sent to another treatment center to be abused at for another full year. I came out with so many more problems than what I came in with. This is the problem with the troubled teen industry. Not every person has an experience like I did, but enough to make these treatment centers an extreme issue and injustice in our medical system. What could you expect when there s the possibility of making tens of thousands of dollars per child? Money proves to be the root of all evil time and time again.I m sure if your child is actually suffering from addiction or if you understand what your child is going through well this place could help. But otherwise, stay away from this place by a 10 foot pole. And the worst part was thought I was genuinely better for 3 years after until I came to reality on the Stockholm-type state I was in. It s only now that I m 22 years old after coming here when I was 16 that I ve actually been able to understand the mindset and abuse I was manipulated into receiving here. This place needs to be sued.

This place completely took advantage of my family and I and put me on a plethora of medications it took me YEARS to get off of. I was constantly degraded and told I would end up dead or in prison by 21 (I m 23 now and living a more happy and blessed life then I could ever imagine) and also wrongfully diagnosed me with severe personality disorders. Don t let this place use their scare tactics on you and only further traumatize you and your family.

A few months ago, my husband and I realized that our older child E. was in trouble regarding her mental health. They were profoundly depressed, extremely anxious, and had begun abusing alcohol in order to medicate these difficult conditions. We contacted Visions Teen Residential Treatment and were greeted warmly, despite it being 11:00PM at night. The gentleman that took our call, John, was completely responsive to the panic and worry we were experiencing, and helped us navigate a thorough assessment on the spot!John's follow through was seamless, and our child was admitted in less than 24 hours from the time of our initial call. As seamless as the admission process was - the treatment itself was spectacular. Our child emerged approximately 3 months later without anxiety or depression, a newfound sense of self-esteem and self-worth, as well as a commitment to remain sober. As a family, we were provided weekly support and educational groups, as well as private family therapy, in order to teach us how to more effectively parent E.Ultimately, our child E felt so supported that they were also willing to continue in the Visions Outpatient Program long-term, to insure a sustainable recovery. Visions treated E. comprehensively - mental health, substance abuse, and eating disorder. We will all be forever grateful for the incredible team at Visions!
