About VA Escondido Clinic

Located in Escondido, California, the Escondido VA Clinic provides substance abuse and mental health treatment to veterans suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. They offer outpatient care, which means you can return home each day at the end of your treatment.

Many times, addiction and mental health problems can combine to make a powerful force that is difficult to treat. This is called a dual diagnosis. For some veterans, conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD or schizophrenia can make it difficult to recover from addiction. These clinics are designed to support clients with these co-occurring conditions and can help them overcome all of the related issues that are impacting their quality of life.

At this clinic, they also offer medication assisted treatment, or MAT, for those who perhaps have more severe cases of addiction. They may require medications such as Suboxone or Vivitrol to reduce the chance of dangerous withdrawal symptoms and difficult cravings. They also treat individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community and offer health maintenance, community support and counseling services.

The counseling options at this outpatient facility aren’t too flashy but they are solid offerings that have been shown to help greatly in the recovery process. These include individual therapy, group therapy and marriage or relationship therapy.

While simple and straightforward, veterans can benefit from these services tremendously. These are all pillars in the addiction treatment community, giving people the tools to learn coping strategies, identify triggers that may be leading them back to drugs or alcohol, and learn how to deal with their traumas. They each have their individual benefits but come together to provide a full spectrum of care.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

This is the worst VA facility I have ever been to. Dr. Sharma is the most bare minimum doctor I have ever seen. The professionalism they carry is unsatisfactory, they do not care for their veteran patients at all and it shows by how many complaints this VA clinic receives. Please do yourself a favor and transfer to the La Jolla or Oceanside clinic, you ll at least get appropriate treatment and care there with people who actually care. It s a shame because they are contracted by the VA and are literally paid by the VA to care veteran patients and do not provide proper care.

It s like every time I visit I get a new doctor. The Navy Seal foundation put me through A very expensive recovery course. I had to pay out of pocket because no one at the VA would look at my paperwork or give me permission to go in that course. I lost 13 pounds and decreased a lot of my pain. I had to pay upwards of $500 out of pocket for a private Dr clearance because the nurse would not even look or listen.to me. The PA was so rude she hung up on me. I changed facilities. Sucks.

Military veterans beware of Dr. Sanjay M. Rajpara.I had a horrible experience with Dr. S. Rajpara. His treatment of military veterans is despicable. I came into the clinic to review my x-rays and to talk about further requests. He was very hostile, rude, and condescending to me. It s a shame that the Escondido VA clinic would hire somebody like this to take care of the military veterans. Military veterans have gone through enough in the military, they don t deserve to be berated when trying to obtain medical care. I never want to see and get care from Dr. Sanjay M. Rajpara ever again.Military veterans, I would advise you to seek another doctor instead of going through the harassment that I experienced with Dr. Sanjay M. Rajpara.

Everything you've ever heard about the VA is correct, and no, it still hasn't gotten any better.

I went in for blood work and the gentleman behind the counter just left me standing there. I finally said I think I'll just have a seat and he goes okay. He calls me in but he doesn't show me like where the door is or anything I had to figure it out myself. The rest of the visit he seemed to have a very sarcastic tone.

Awful! I can t believe the terrible service I got. I had an annual physical that only took 10 minutes to do. Although I m healthy thank goodness and my labs came back great, I felt like I wasn t a concern to them. I came in and the staff was doing their own thing, gossiping, no big deal I don t care, but not very professional. I sat down waited a few minutes. Then went to the back to get my blood pressure check etc. the nurse was nice and asked the right questions. Waited for the doctor, she came in a few minutes later. I had a hard time understanding her and her accent, but she was very nice. Although, I didn t get asked the questions I have been asked before on my physicals in Mission Valley. She did the same checks that I normally get which was fine. But I felt like it was lacking like in the past when they asked more in depth questions like do you feel safe do you have a place to call home etc. Once I was done I felt I bit confused. Do I need to make an appt. for women s health check up at the front desk? So I asked the front desk if I needed to make my Pap smear and mammogram appt. with her. Once I said that a woman in another chair turned and looked over to us very quickly. Not sure what that was all about but felt uncomfortable after. The woman in the front desk didn t know so she went to ask the nurse in the back when she came back she said she couldn t find her so I just said I would call later. That was all 10 minutes of my time. The Oceanside location is awesome. It s a bigger facility with great customer service and I feel so special when I go there every time, sound cheesy, but they make you feel like they care. Too bad because the Escondido location is so close but small and I feel like the people that work there seem over it, like they hate their job s, unfortunately that s not the patient s fault why do I feel like I m at fault? Shame on them.

Very friendly reception staff. clean waiting room. Steve in the lab is courteous and efficient at draining me. Inland North County veterans are fortunate to have such a clinic in the neighborhood.
