About Glen Burnie VA Outpatient Clinic – VA Maryland Health Care System

Glen Burnie VA Outpatient Clinic is part of the VA Maryland Health Care System. The clinic provides primary care and general outpatient (OP) or specialty services. This includes mental healthcare and women’s health services. You’ll find ‘em located in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

They also offer preventive health and education services, medical screenings and referrals to specialized and inpatient care. The aspect of their services I especially find remarkably beneficial and helpful is their social work. Social workers can connect you to community resources like housing, employment support and financial aid. This can make for impressive recovery support after receiving treatment from the facility.

Another great thing is that you can potentially access care without enrolling in the VA health care. They offer same day appointments, telehealth visits or walk-in express care for urgent medical issues.

They offer outpatient mental health programs to help veterans tackle common psychiatric conditions like depression, anxiety and PTSD. This program also addresses substance use disorders and co-occurring conditions. The latter is when someone is dealing with both addictive behavior and mental issues.

The program is led by caring and experienced professionals who specialize in individualized treatment. These experts are committed to helping you address these behavioral issues and lead a healthy lifestyle.

The core services involve consultation, evaluation/assessment and individual and group therapy. Group therapy is one of the most potent recipes to tackle negative emotions that fuel behavioral challenges. It teaches you to manage stress and emotions better, communicate effectively, and build healthy relationships. These essential life skills promote sound coping and relapse prevention mechanisms necessary for lasting recovery.

Aftercare services may involve connections to VA community resources to support your recovery, such as housing and employment.

The best part is that their services are affordable and have flexible payment options. They accept Medicare, Medicaid and TRICARE. You can also fund your treatment through VA financial hardship assistance if you’re uninsured and having financial difficulties. You may even get help with transportation to and from your appointment if eligible.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Once a person has become addicted to a substance, drug rehab in Maryland is often necessary to overcome that addiction. These programs provide the tools individuals need to manage the physical, mental, and emotional issues involved and begin a successful recovery journey.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating Disorder Treatment

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Over the past two years, I ve been to this clinic several times and I have not had ANY issues. Not one. Dr. Fischer is my primary care physician and she is very knowledgeable, responsive, and great bedside manner. I was also seen by a Nurse Practitioner, can t remember her name but great service. Everyone is very nice and pleasant. A breath of fresh air, especially compared to the main VA.

This is the worst location I ve been to. If you can go to the VA Hostpital in Baltimore, then go. The intake staff are more patient and nicer than this location. I ve been trying to make an appointment at this location for months. Every time I called I m number 30 in line. Unfortunately I can t sit on hold for hours only to be hung up on, everyday. Please do better bc people have earned and need these resources.

I was just told by a GB front desk representative that they "don't answer the phones anymore" as a rule. "We don't do that" and "call the general VA appointment line, someone there will probably answer". But, ummm, when the general appointment representative answers you tell them that you need to talk to someone from your care team, GB Outpatient doesn't answer for them either. Sooooo....truly not a place to go if you are looking for healthcare.

Response from the owner1 year ago

My primary care is going downhill fast !Through secure messaging begining 09/28, I have asked my primary care doctor of pact team 4 at the GB Clinic to call my Giant pharmacy to renew my blood pressure meds. It's been almost 2 weeks, 4 secure messages, 2 replies from nurses and I've not had meds for almost a week!!!There is no way to contact by voice... Phones aren't answered and can't leave message for Pacteam.Called customer advocate line last week.. no return call!!!!People at VA GB clinic apparently don't give a hoot about Vets !

On site care is stellar, contacting the clinic by phone is an absolute failure at all times. Most of the phone options send you to the Baltimore campus. The "speak to a primary team member" option goes dead, with no voice mail after 12 rings. The "speak to a nurse" option goes to a voicemail that is not set up, thus no messages are taken.

Response from the owner2 years ago
Mr. Woryk, We are glad that you are happy with the care you are receiving at the Glen Burnie VA Outpatient Clinic, but we apologize for any delays you have experience in reaching a member of your health care team. Our goal is to provide exceptional customer service to all Veterans and their family members. We encourage you to use Secure Messaging via MyHealtheVet to connect with your primary care team. To enroll for MyHealtheVet, please visit www.myhealth.va.gov. The VA system is terrible. If you're sick and want to be seen you have to go to the ER and wait there because a scheduled appointment is 30-90 days out from the day you called. SMDH

Response from the owner2 years ago
Mr. Pettigrew, We apologize if you had a delay in receiving a scheduled clinic appointment at the Glen Burnie VA Outpatient Clinic, but we are currently down several primary care providers. We are in the process of recruiting and onboarding new primary care providers, which will resolve this issue. If you are ever not able to schedule a primary care appointment within 20 days, you are eligible to receive a primary care appointment in the community at VA expense. Additionally, VA has an Urgent Care Benefit that allows you to visit an in-network urgent care provider in your community without any prior authorization. For more information about VA's Community Care benefit, please visit https://www.va.gov/COMMUNITYCARE/programs/veterans/index.asp. Thank you. VA Maryland Health Care System
