About UPMC Mercy

UPMC Mercy -- Pittsburgh is a Catholic hospital providing mental health and substance abuse treatment programs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a short distance from the Monongahela River. This location offers several primary and specialty care services in addition to its addiction and behavioral health programs. They serve adult clients. UPMC Mercy has an 18 bed unit for medically monitored detoxification. They also maintain a team of peer support specialists to help clients navigate treatment and explore post treatment options. Services offered include:

Medically monitored detox is the safest way for clients to withdraw from drugs and alcohol and is often the first step in treating addiction. Detox takes place at the hospital so staff can help clients manage their withdrawal symptoms and prepare them for the next step in their treatment plan.

UPMC Mercy uses MAT to treat opioid addiction. Following an assessment, clients are prescribed an FDA approved medication to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms. MAT is combined with outpatient counseling services and is not provided independently.

Clients in crisis can visit (or be referred to) UPMC Mercy for stabilization. During this time, they will undergo assessment and receive therapeutic support services. Once stable, clients will be referred to an outpatient program or other support service. This service is also available over the telephone.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs specialize in providing comprehensive care for clients who choose to remain in their homes and communities during treatment. Their services may include transitional support for clients stepping down from intensive inpatient programming. Ambulatory medical detox may be provided for clients at low risk for withdrawal complications. Many programs include evening, night, and weekend services to accommodate clients who are working professionals or caregivers. Addiction counseling and life skills training are common treatment modalities.

inpatient iconInpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab provides clients with an opportunity to focus solely on their sobriety away from the stressors of the home and workplace. Clients receive housing, food, and intensive clinical supervision. They also typically engage in multiple addiction counseling sessions each week, including daily individual, group, and/or family sessions. Most programs also prioritize recovery-focused life skills training, including courses in relapse prevention. Many facilities offer evidence-based holistic therapies, such as yoga and meditation.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

With a partial hospitalization program (PHP), you can participate in intensive rehabilitation treatment with the ability to return home at the end of the day. For a weekly minimum of 20 hours, a partial hospitalization program can take place up to 5 days a week for an average of 90 days. During PHP treatment, you can receive relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group therapy, and other behavioral therapy interventions.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

Because the severity of withdrawal symptoms can fluctuate, constant monitoring under 24-hour clinical care in Pennsylvania is recommended for early recovery. As you undergo detox, medical staff will supervise your health and ensure severe symptoms do not develop or threaten your life. Professional counselors will also be available to treat mental and emotional health needs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

I will start by saying it was a holiday weekend. Only a select staff members truly cares for my father on the stroke floor. Often we had to remind staff about taking blood sugar or even request simple things like more water. If you ever happen to get Charlotte D (NURSE) and/or LINDA(PCT) from 10E you and family member that needs care ,will be truly blessed. They are true angels and will always ensure your loved ones are care for. They get are 5 stars and the only reason I gave stars in the first place

I'm sitting mercy hospital for chest pains. The nurse and the doctor were very rude. Because I've been waiting for them to answer the call button. It took them exactly an hour to help me. When I said why did it take so long for someone to answer the call button. He said if you don't like it leave. Very disrespectful it's7.pm. And they still are just standing around talking. Some are eating some are texting on their phones. What a complete mocking of professional behavior . I'm never coming back to this rude place.

This is the absolute most horrendous hospital I ve ever seen. My fianc was initially here on a Wednesday after being involved in an explosion, he got sent in to the er and transferred to the burn unit. Once released from the burn unit they told him to go back to the er, when he returned down to the er they said he needs to check back in and wait even thought he was never discharged in the first place so we left. We had to return 3 days later and this time they said he was never discharged previously and they have been looking for him for 3 DAYS! How you lose a patient for 3 days is beyond me. Not to mention when we got to the er the second time the receptionist was sleeping and I had to yell excuse me 3 times to get her to wake up and the floor was covered in garbage and urine absolutely ridiculous!

UPDATE: It has been a week and no one has contacted me from Mercy about my experience after I reached out via their feedback page at their request. I love how UPMC just pastes the same tired response on every negative review, only to ignore you when you actually take the time to provide them feedback. SMH.I m not one to resort to leaving negative reviews online for a business, but my experience with Mercy has been so bad that they have left me no choice. If I could give them ZERO stars, I would. I visited the ENT office at Mercy for an ear issue that I had been experiencing for months. After spending about 20 min. with the doctor, they were not able to diagnose the issue. I was combating the issue with a combination of Flonase and Claritin, so the doctor s recommendation was to just keep doing what you are doing . Afterwards, I got billed over $1100 for the visit! I m incredibly frustrated as there was no resolution, next steps, or anything of value provided during my appointment and now I m stuck with a massive bill and the same lingering issues that I was experiencing before the appointment. The whole point of the visit was to try and get to the root cause of the problem so that I could STOP taking the Claritin and Flonase every single day.I spoke with Billing, Patient Care, and the ENT office directly and I didn t feel that any of them actually cared about me as a patient. All they wanted to do was continually justify the cost of the visit. They also recommended coming in for a re-evaluation ..for another $1100. This experience just tells me that UPMC cares more about the money and quantity of patients over actually helping those that choose them as a provider. It s incredibly sad given their presence in the Pittsburgh area. Regardless, I will be avoiding UPMC moving forward and recommending others do the same. There is a vast difference in the quality of care received at an AHN facility versus a UPMC facility. I gave UPMC a shot and they completely let me down.

ER is absolutely horrendous. They didn t even properly clean out the wounds. They didn t give any antibiotics for anything, only Tylenol. The family friend had a couple broken ribs but since she could walk they discharged her immediately. She also had more issues but too many for me to remember, but the ER didn t even treat her properly due to her insurance.

My father stay there and was released yesterday. He has fallen and fractured his hip and 3 ribs he is 80 and also has dementia. The nurses and staff on his floor were awful. Except for Tony he was awesome and amazing. We would walk in to find my dad's room fithy. Floors were sticky with crumbs everywhere. Dirty wash clothes and garbage left on the floor. Because of the pain meds my father needed help eating. No one helped him. Had to ask to have the water pitcher refilled after the lady delivery them walked right by his room, and saw up. He spilled water on himself and had dropped most of his food in his bed. They just left it my sister's and I were cleaning him up. Pressed the call button for a nurse to change him. Took almost 45 minutes for anyone to respond. Also left him sitting in a chair with his head bent completely sideways for 3 1/2 hours. Call buttons are going off and the nurses ignore them and continue on talking. Horrible 11th floor. Except for Tony he was awesome. The nurses on the 12 floor were amazing also from his stay before this one.
