I delivered my first baby in March 2024. The first anesthesiologist administering epidural messed up and asked for a senior anesthesiologist to come confirm what he was supposed to do. My family and I were really upset about the situation until the second time when the senior anesthesiologist did her job well. This incident was followed up on by the department, which I appreciate. What s more, the labor and delivery nurse Kayla was the worst person I ve ever met in that hospital! She had me walking around for more than an hour with the epidural needle still in my back and I ve been dealing with a bad pinched nerve in that same site to this day! She even had the nerve to yell at my husband that we needed to leave our delivery room because someone else needs it. She kept repeating it without any regard to the fact that I myself just delivered my own baby and needed time to come to. I would never deliver at Magee again and recommend other women to research other facilities in Pittsburgh for person-centered care. What s more, visitors were able to come right up to my rooms; when I was being induced, while laboring in the delivery room and even during my recovery room! This scared me the most about Magee. I had a birth plan that each nurse of duty was aware of and yet it was not followed. Though vulnerable and in pain, I waited at the nursery window while my baby was given the newborn routine because I was so worried I would be the unlucky one to get her newborn taken because staff allowed anyone who just knew my name access to me and my baby while under their care.Kayla if you re reading this: you should ve been slapped for handling new parents the way you did. With your nasty personality, you should never be able to work around women or children.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

With the unfortunate circumstances of our miscarriage, I did however have a great experience as a patient under the care team of Magee hospital. I wish I could remember all the names of everyone from yesterday but each and everyone one of them was kind, empathetic, and genuinely listened to my concerns / worries. Each provider: nurse, aid, physician, patient coordinator and anesthesiologist were amazing. They communicated clearly and everything was on schedule. The space was also very clean and I felt comfortable in my room with a tv and plenty of staff checking in. I truly don t think I could have asked for a better care team to help assist my husband and I with our loss. Thank you Magee Hospital! The one name I do remember from very one was nurse Gabi! She was great!

i only went here because nobody would take me past a certain month in my pregnancy i am very aware of my conseption date, i know when my last period was, my due date and how far along i am in this pregnancy was wrong on every single medical form while they refused to listen to me and neglected my genuine concerns. if they had trusted me instead of measuring my baby and guessing, i would know my due date. no matter what, it was almost like spite, they would try to tell me that i was wrong. i am 40 weeks pregnant.they drew viles upon viles of blood in the emergency room and accused me of not taking care of myself and not taking my vitamins. i do take care of myself and my baby. the tests showed that i was anemic, when i went back about a week or two later i was blamed accused as if it was my fault because i didn t just stop being anemic immediately that day they also decided to refuse to let me leave the hospital without telling me i would have to wait all night for a social worker, told my mom it was because i was suicidal, blamed my visit to crisis being the reason they were concerned, and i couldn t leave until almost noon the day after. while taking those nine tubes of blood, i was stabbed for times, had a nurse dig around in my arm and fail, another nurse blew two veins and missed once, but thank her for taking the needle out and not shoving it in and out of my arm like the other one.if they try to measure your baby to tell you how far along you are and you know how far along you are, tell them not to put misinformation in your chart it took three different appointments before someone actually listened to me i am only 5ft and was 90-something pounds before pregnancy and they tried to convince me i was wrong because my baby was 5 lbs and not 11 also i was leaking, needing to wear pads and t while asking about what it meant while i was ignored to learn that i was approaching my real due date and not the one they got wrong stop measuring babies and pretending like that s accurate.

I have my fiance'e in the hospital for a week now, her care is hit or miss depends on if nurses are "Covid" nurses (online trained) or not. My main problem is with the employees. They are loud always just hanging out in patient areas it is ridiculous. We went to the cafeteria today for her first solid meal of the week, what are we greeted by loud employees yelling to each other across the room and actually laying down in the booths. If you want a better patient experience go somewhere else.

I had one of the most traumatic experiences of my life at Magee Women s Hospital in Pittsburgh on September 17, 2024. I went in for urgent medical attention after discovering a rapidly growing lump in my breast an issue the doctors themselves deemed severe due to INTERNAL BLEEDING and in need of an immediate CT scan and emergency surgery. Naturally, I expected quick action from the hospital. What I got instead was hours of neglect, confusion, and inaction. From the moment I arrived, I was subjected to pure negligence. Despite the visible worsening of my condition and my constant complaints that the pain medication was not working, the staff did little to address my growing pain and worsening condition. I was left on an empty stomach since I was being prepped for surgery while they dragged their feet without giving me any concrete answers. After hours of being ignored and worried about my life, I went live on Instagram to document what I was going through. As a Black woman, I was terrified that my concerns were being dismissed, and with the well-known risks Black women face in hospitals, I needed to make sure someone would hear me if things took a turn for the worst. However, instead of addressing my health, Magee Women s Hospital sent a mob of security guards into my room. They found my Instagram page, watched my livestream, and barged into my private hospital room, accusing me of violating their policies which I later learned I was not.The ER Unit Director, Cindy, entered my room and spoke to me in an extremely aggressive and hostile manner that no patient should ever have to endure. She yelled at me for bringing attention to their neglect, when in reality, it was my life they were putting at risk. Then the hospital staff demanded that I sign a waiver stating I would stop posting on social media, or else they would refuse me care. They even threatened to confiscate my phone! Let me be clear: I was coerced into signing under duress, which is unethical and potentially illegal. At no point did I receive a Patient Handbook explaining their policies only after I demanded it did they reluctantly provide it, and guess what? None of their claims were valid according to the handbook. And I DID NOT sign the waiver after pointing all of this out to them. After this, they tried to prevent my visitors from coming to my room, lied about available beds, and left me in a small, uncomfortable ER room for nearly 12 hours before transferring me to a proper room right before surgery. I didn t get moved to a better room until almost 11 p.m.!As a mother of four young children, every minute they delayed care put my life and my children s future in jeopardy. I was terrified I wouldn t make it home to them. No mother should ever have to fear for her life while sitting in a hospital that is supposed to be providing urgent care.On top of all this, this isn t the first time Magee Women s Hospital has exploited me. In 2020, during my triplet pregnancy, they used my story for media coverage across multiple platforms, exploiting me and my family s private story for their own publicity, without full respect for my consent.Magee Women s Hospital is an absolute disgrace. They failed me, they failed Black women, and they failed anyone who expects basic human decency and care. I will be pursuing legal action against them, and I strongly urge anyone especially Black women to think twice before seeking care at this hospital.

I was going to Magee infusion center for years but I had to quit all upmc outpatient clinics pretty much. In the beginning, everything was nice and a nice relationship with the nurses. But things turned sour when the nurses banded against me when a nurse Mary Ann pored through my patient file and called me slurs in my presence at the nurses station. On top of this, i was asked incredibly inappropriate questions way beyond the scope of an infusion nurse.I believe I've been blacklisted and retaliated against for complaining. She was complaining in front of me using charged statements, a slur and making generalizations. It is my belief that Mary Ann is the cause of this problem and the subsequent horrific treatment afterwards systemwide. I feel done dirty by them and the system. The problem ended up getting out of hand every appointment or ER visit. Even after taking the appropriate measures to resolve this problem with the hospital, ultimately they sided with her. So, im leaving all upmc facilities pretty much. Good luck upmcIn addition: I was treated in a defamatory way by the hospital system trying to ruin my peace and reputation. The correct terminology is gaslighting they usedI've never been so slighted, humiliated and mistreated by an entire hospital system in my entire life based on lies and false testimony of a miserable wretch of a nurse! I was hate crimed by her, using her official capacity to mine my patient info and tell lies and use hate speech on me AND going to make a bogus report on me to blacklist me.People, go with your family members to appointments to keep an eye on your family and the care they receive!!There's no human compassion anymore here. The nurses are waiting for a reason to go to their superior to complain. Do you really want your family to experience what I did? Really? I have ptsd now from the extremely subpar care. They don't care if your life is thrown away. Upmc doesnt hold themselves accountable for their mistakes! Go elsewhere! CONSUMER ADVISORY!

I went to an appointment today for a mammogram and an ultrasound. I had to take the day off from work and drive 30 minutes to the hospital. When I arrived, they told me they couldn t see me because the person who made the appointment made a mistake, and there was no doctor available to do the mammogram. I lost a day of work, money, and time, and they told me I had to reschedule. so angry.
