About Unison Health

Unison Health is a comprehensive behavioral health and substance abuse treatment facility in Toledo, Ohio, with four other locations throughout the state. Unison Health strives to deliver care to clients regardless of background or financial standing and has programs for underinsured or uninsured clients. They serve adults, teens, and child clients. Unison Health provides clients with individualized treatment plans that stabilize and treat underlying conditions and support ongoing recovery following program completion. Services offered include:

This is a form of outpatient detox ideal for those with mild symptoms. Visit the facility daily to undergo detox with additional support from medical staff. Detox may be required before moving on to another level of care.

During this program, clients reside on campus, a secure environment constantly monitored by staff. Clients have their basic needs met during their stay while participating in a structured therapeutic and recovery activities schedule. Following completion of inpatient treatment, clients may transition into a lower level of care.

During outpatient treatment, clients regularly visit the treatment center while continuing to live at home. This lower level of care is best for those who have previously compelled a higher level of care or are otherwise stable.

MAT is the use of approved prescription medication to help clients cope with withdrawal symptoms and cravings. If an assessment determines that MAT is appropriate, receiving clients will be closely monitored to ensure safety.

Ok, I will NOT leave a review of ONE experience here. I have had GOOD and VERY BAD experiences here at Unison. I had some of the BEST THERAPY in my lifetime with Unison, including some therapists such as Ludmil Grorgiev (RIP... whom I will forever miss), and Nurse Carol Krieger, who is a GODSEND (SHE gets and whom I PRAY they never replace). And then there are trash therapists who work there as well and who have made shadetree diagnoses of me based on my narcissistic ex wife physically and emotionally abusing me, and then turning to these people and lying, and these therapists turning her diagnoses around on me... (I was beaten and abused by my ex wife, she cheated on me, and the therapist told my wife it was ok to do it to me because I WAS A NARCISSIST, and i have it recorded, she also told her to stay with me and claim she had dependent personality disorder just to keep me from leaving her)... I won't mention their names here for professionalism... Le Ann.......) but they do have dangerous therapists here as well... so do NOT get couple's therapy at Unison... they will blame the man for EVERYTHING no matter what. (My THANKFULLY EX NOW) wife ended up in counseling for domestic violence, and they STILL blamed me at Unison. She ADMITTED cheating, and they STILL blamed me...There are also family therapists who like to play games against fathers in the same way.NOW, make sure you are careful.who you get, and be very careful to ask questions, do research, and if it doesn't feel right, USE THE COMPLAINTS PROCESS AND ASK FOR SOMEONE ELSE!!! BUT a cautionary tale with that, when my therapist did pass away, I was put in hold for almost a year, and wasn't given a new one. When they finally did give me one, we were not compatible. I asked to be switched off, and unison delayed me for so long (more than 6 months), that I ended up leaving Unison Behavioral and going to a Mercy practice, where I found another therapist. I still use Carol Krieger for medical therapy, but I won't come back for behavioral health anymore because of the issues I dealt with, but not all of my experiences were bad. Just field them out, and if they stall, move on to Harbor...Do NOT go to Zepf, as they are 100,000 times worse...

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients who have just completed detox or who are at an increased risk of relapse, such as those experiencing a life crisis, typically enroll in an inpatient rehab. There, they receive housing, meals, and intensive clinical supervision. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive individual, group, and family therapy. Clients may also participate in life skills training to support their long-term sobriety. Integrative rehab centers offer a variety of evidence-based holistic therapies, such as meditation or equine therapy.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are designed to ensure clients receive continuing care while in the maintenance phase of recovery. Some clients may be in outpatient treatment, which is generally considered to be an element of drug rehab aftercare. The specific services provided in these programs are often determined by the client's case manager and care team in consultation with the client. Common services include peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
Designed for individuals with moderate to severe addictions, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides a more intensive form of outpatient therapy. PHP treatment can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option after being discharged from a hospital or residential program. A partial hospitalization program typically requires a minimum of 20 hours weekly for an average of 90 days. Depending on your care plan, PHPs can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Ohio provides comprehensive treatment to address the physical and psychological needs of those struggling with substance use disorders. This may involve inpatient and/or outpatient care.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Cognitive behavioral therapy in Ohio may occur in individual, group, or family sessions. It involves focusing on specific thought and behavior problems. Participants learn coping techniques and are asked to practice them as homework between sessions.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy helps with detox and drug rehab treatment in Ohio. This treatment gives you the skills you need to develop healthy eating habits, which help you recover more quickly and maintain long term sobriety.

Recreational therapy supports recovery from drug and alcohol addiction by providing you with enjoyable activities that improve your physical and mental health. When you engage in sports, creative arts, and nature excursions, it helps reduce your cravings and stress levels while building a supportive community of peers who can help promote your long term sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I have been coming to Unison for 10 years, when I first came here I was a complete mess, if it wasn t for my team Carol Krieger, Kim Growing, and I have to include my favorite receptionist Sara her smile and her care has got me through the door, if it wasn t for them I wouldn t of made it this far so thank you Unisons for giving me a great team.

I would not bother going here. The psychiatrist I had, Seth Colvin, was god awful to me. All my words were ignored when I said the meds do nothing but make me worse and his response every time was to just up the dose regardless till it works. There's no care for the patients here. You're just a number to them. They're all just there to get your money, especially Seth. And calling the place gets you literally nowhere, whether it be in or out of office hours I was just lead to leave a voicemail eventually and never received a call back. Its actually a joke and seems borderline illegal.
