About UAB Medical West Hospital

Located in Bessemer, Alabama is the UAB Medical West Hospital. This is a medical hospital that provides a continuum of healthcare services for children, adults, and families. Among the services they offer here is specialized addiction treatment. Their addiction program is rooted in evidence based practices and takes a skills-based approach to recovery.

The substance use program is also tailored to help you if you have a dual diagnosis, are a working professional, or are simply seeking specialized, individually tailored care.

Work with Addiction Recovery Experts

The UAB Medical West Hospital is recognized as one of the nation’s top medical facilities because they are part of a major academic medical system. One of the benefits of receiving treatment in a facility such as this is that you’ll get to work with a multidisciplinary team of professionals who have experience helping individuals and families impacted by substance use.

Though addiction is attacked from a clinical standpoint with evidence based therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy and medication support, there are holistic approaches applied too. This can include everything from spiritual support to trauma focused care to addressing coexisting mental health struggles.

Family Support Services

Their supportive care here extends beyond just your recovery needs. They also have programs here that work with your family members and other loved ones as well. Through workshops, family sessions, and support groups, your loved ones will learn how to best help you as you move through your treatment.

Recovery for Professionals

There are specialized programs here to address unique recovery needs that clients might have. For example, there is a recovery program for working professionals. Alongside discrete substance use treatment, this program also helps you tackle everyday stressors like work, finances, and general life challenges.

The night shift nurses in the UAB West emergency department are rude and insensitive. The experience was HORRIBLE and I'm being nice about it.

I took my brother here because he was sick. He was really cold and kept asking for a blanket. The initial nurse said that she had to get his information into the system before she could get him a blanket. PCT brought the blanket and he asked for another one, she said she'd see if they had anymore blankets. I've never been at any hospital and they didn't have a extremely large blanket warmer. He eventually received an extra blanket but we had to keep begging. It's really disheartening that a patient isn't treated kindly when they're sick. Nurses and PCT employees are supposed to be caring people. Totally disappointed in the facility.

My husband originally went to the freestanding UAB West hospital; but their ultrasound machine was down so we were transferred to the McCalla UAB West. While he did get an ultrasound done, no labs were done, and a doctor NEVER spoke to us. Only his nurse came in 2-3 times. She told us his ultrasound was negative and to treat his symptoms with Tylenol. We spent 4+ hours in the ER to never see or speak to a doctor. Nor for the doctor to examine him or for labs to be drawn. The new hospital clearly doesn t cover up the bad medical care. We will not be back!

Accepted Insurance

UAB Medical West Hospital works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have medical support available around the clock, and 24-hour clinical care in Alabama offers a safe environment in which you can begin your recovery journey. This feature offers constant supervision in situations like medical detox, where a team of professionals are on hand to ensure the withdrawal processs is performed safely and comfortably.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Proper nutrition increases comfort levels during detox and supports healing during drug rehab in Alabama. Nutrition therapy provides this crucial, balanced nourishment and helps you develop skills for long term health throughout recovery.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine replacement therapy in Alabama may be a good option for you if you're dependent on cigarettes or similar products. This therapy allows you to slowly lower your intake of nicotine so you don't suffer extreme withdrawal or cravings as you quit smoking.

They always have a problem treating you with any kind of decency. They are rude and have no respect for your time. And when you try calling they almost always don't bother to answer and when they do they don't tell you anything useful.

Wow, just wow! Today was my first visit at the new location. From the second I stepped inside the door, I was greeted by the sweetest, little lady. The building is beautiful! Every encounter I had was pleasant. I saw Dr. Raymond Workman for the first time. His staff is wonderful and I think he might be my favorite doctor- so kind and caring. Thank you for a great experience! I will be back next month to see Dr. Gill and I always have positive experiences with her staff. I am so grateful to have this state of the art hospital in my area. It is convenient, first class and a gift.

I went to the ED with symptoms of dizziness, left arm went numb and tingly from shoulder down, felt like someone put a weighted blanket over my body, suddenly I got extremely tired. I then started vomiting. I was put in a triage room for a while. The lady opened the door and said I forgot you were in here. Never got an ID bracelet. Was finally sent to the back where I sat for several hours listening to people walk by laughing having a good time. Nurse came in and asked had I seen a doctor. I stated no, that she was the first person we had seen. She left and another 45 minutes or so stitno one. I made the decision to leave and go home. I was genuinely scared. Unsure of what was happening. 10/10 do not recommend going here.

The receptionist I encountered on 4/9/25 at 10:30am at the UAB Medical West - Oncology Department was exceptionally rude and couldn’t have made things more difficult for not only my mother and I, but our insurance company as well. She was unwilling to properly communicate with either side and was beyond dismissive. Her behavior was disgusting, especially in an oncology setting. This individuals interpersonal skills are not conducive to a patient-facing role in the slightest.

My husband was on the 9th floor for a week. His condition got progressively worse. He's in UAB downtown Cardiac ICU now with a collapsed lung. The ICU at West was exceptional. The people on the 9th floor were terrible. Terrible Dr.s. $250 a day on top of insurance for substandard care, and we are not out of the woods yet. Im going to tell everyone I know not to use this hospital. Our healthcare system.is a mess.
