BACS Townhouse is truly a Godsend. My wife and I were homeless as of August 2022. The Staff was nothing short of sweet and pleasant. The only drawback, is occasionally we would get some nut jobs in there that would get a little violent because they re having a mental episode. As a matter of fact, I almost got into a fight with a couple of them. If you re really serious about your business, and getting out of homelessness, this is the place for you. And my wife and I had a laser focus. Another advantage we had was the fact that we own a vehicle that we slept in while we were homeless. BACS hooked us up with a special kind of homeless shelter, that allowed us to park our car in the special kind of parking lot on 8th Street in West Oakland. There they would provide a table full of plastic bags full of survival food. Like potted meat, Vienna, sausage, and all sorts of assortment of chips. It was really a great set up. During the night they provided a porta potty at a place to wash your hands after you use it. Once a week, a truck would come in to the lot and provide both free showers and laundry world is a homeless people in the lot. They even provided service for your car in some cases. By September 2022, we were blessed to be hooked up with Holland house on W. Grand Ave. in West Oakland. And that magical day finally came in January 1, 2023 when we would move into our new apartment. And we ve been here ever since. I think got a boat for Bay Area community services, where I write this review from our beautiful little apartment here in Oakland.

its interesting the way BACS does things you cant work/look for job while also trying to get shelter. Information seems to not be solid and process is etremely messy. they should be on point and one should be able to search for job but one has to come like at 730am in the morning and it can take who knows how LONG IF they are doing assessments that day which you wont know till you spend the money adn get ALL the way here to perhap be turned away oh and if you deal with disabilities your screwed this place is not disability friendly._____________________________________________________Got to love the struggle of getting here being homeless show up to stand in line for assessments and then be told they aren't doing assessments and I love that after I was offered meth from a patron outside. This is the problem no one chooses to go through this so even if you want and need services you can't really get them but you can get meth lol. So easier to get meth at BACS townhouse from a dude named Toni then actual services. I see now why things are the way they are in Alameda county. Congrats BACS. Staff literally stated no assessments day I arrive at 830am as it also states on whiteboard they put out and told my community worker first come first serve for assessments which start at 9. NO ONE stated assessments 12-3 so they aren't even giving consistent reliable information to people

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I was referred to this place because I was homeless coming from another state. My case manager told me that she wasn't a case worker. Then never helped me with housing or my homelessness. All she kept saying was I can get a case manager from a Doctor. So, if you don't need help for drugs or addiction then you must help yourself. I had to find a place to stay and find my own place. They help with application fee but they try their hardest not to. I realize that if you don't do for self this place is worthless. They don't help with holding fees, but holding fees are connected with application fees. They don't help with trying to unlink that or nothing. O had to figure that out and it took me a whole month to do. I'm very dissatisfied. Holding fees are apart of the deposit that they claim to help with. I'm a domestic violence victim twice, homeless etc. And I got no help.

Towne House in Oakland, CA has been a lifeline during an incredibly challenging period in my life. I can t express enough gratitude to the amazing team at Towne House, particularly to Paige Iverson, Chrissy Cavasinni, and Jeanice. Their unwavering kindness and support have made an immeasurable difference in my life. When I found myself in a desperate situation, Paige, Chrissy, and Jeanice stepped in with compassion and practical assistance. They provided me with a place to stay in a motel for two weeks, along with essential items like water and socks. Their generosity and care made me feel truly valued and gave me a sense of hope during a difficult time. The drop-in center at Towne House is a haven of comfort and solace. It s a welcoming space where I could watch movies, enjoy hot meals, and even play with the adorable resident dog. These simple joys were instrumental in helping me find a sense of peace and normalcy. The dedication of Paige, Chrissy, Jeanice, and the entire Towne House team to improving the lives of individuals in need is nothing short of remarkable. However, it s important to note that the staff at Towne House could use more support and funding to continue their vital work.I strongly urge anyone reading this review to consider supporting Towne House in any way they can. The assistance and care provided here are invaluable, and it s crucial that the dedicated staff receive the resources they need to continue their mission. Towne House deserves all the help it can get to make a positive impact on more lives.Thank you, Paige, Chrissy, Jeanice, and the entire Towne House team, for being the pillars of hope and support during my challenging times. Your work is truly transformative, and I hope this review encourages others to join in supporting your mission.

Helpful staff. They fees you while you wait(for hours) including breakfast and lunch. They are limited on placement availability but they try. They have more clients than other cities which requires them to rush unlike the Berkeley site. They gave us food for there and food to go including a tent, blankets, and toiletry items. I think the Oakland site should have access to those items for clients like the Berkeley site. It made all the difference for me and my family.

I am not sure where even to start. I had to fight for several years for a therapist; I still don't have a functional psychiatrist. They placed me next to one of their other patients who almost immediately started harassing everyone on the floor, especially me. Not only did they not do anything, they pretended they were but behind the scenes they were doing everything in their power to thwart me doing anything about the situation. Their case management is a joke and they will tell you as much if they are honest. Lots of inappropriate relationships with patients, whether that be sexual, drugs, or gaslighting. They don't care, they operate like a gang and their allegiance is to BACS not BACS clients. They make tons of promises they can't or won't keep, I have been waiting for several specialist consults for well over a year and... nothing. Staff is often condescending and HELLA play favorites. It's just all bad. The government really needs to look into the HEAT program.
