About The Kiloby Center for Recovery

The Kiloby Center for Recovery is now closed. While in operation, it was located in Rancho Mirage, California. They were a residential treatment center with typical lengths of stay ranging between 30 and 90 days.

Their approach to addiction treatment was based on using mindfulness and meditation to address spiritual elements of recovery. They billed themselves as a non 12 Step treatment facility. They believed that an advantage to the recovery strategy they offered was that it was based in unconditional acceptance.

The Kiloby Center for Recovery founders continue to teach their spiritual practices on a private basis.

Grandson was there from July 2024 to September 2024. He left because his grandfather passed away and everyone refused to take him to the airport. I had to spend 125.00 for an Uber because they had already caused him to miss his first 700.00 flight and was about to cause him to miss the second one. These are very cruel and cold hearted people, one person attacked him physically because he wouldn't leave them alone. So, I don't know why they say they are closed because they are still billing blue cross for his care. Sounds like body brokers to me.

I went to Kiloby for 6 months. the work they do at the center is very rewarding and changed my life. With that being said, it is a smaller treatment center with a small number of staff which results in a disorganized feeling to the program and a LOT of repeat groups which got very boring. Plus a lot of time is spent sitting around doing 'self support' because they don't have enough staff to run groups and do one on one sessions at the same time. And don't be fooled when you hear them say this is not a 12 step program; 12 step meetings are MANDATORY. and one last thing: I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THEIR SOBER LIVING... unless you like sleeping in very cheap bunk beds and tight quarters with upwards of 8-9 people at a time. I am not saying I don't think this is a good program, because it is and I got a lot out of it but I think there is a lot of room for improvement from Kiloby. Give it a try if you want to try something different that really gets to the core of your issues.Update, 5 years later: After re-reading my review, and the reviews of others who have left a rating, I truly think The Kiloby Center deserves at least a 4-4.5 Star rating. On reflection, the work I did here changed my life more than any of the other programs I've been to. The comments I made about the sober living seem so trivial now.. I can honestly say, for a smaller treatment center, Kiloby did their best and still managed to make a bigger impact on my life than any other 'rehab'/program. I can't say thank you enough. this place gave me an entirely new point of view.

Thank you for your comments, Dylan. We are happy you believe the Kiloby Center changed your life. To address a couple of your comments, we do require self-support time to prepare clients to head back into their lives with the tool of our groundbreaking work. Our staff to client ratio is actually much higher than most centers and we provide three private sessions per week for full time clients, something that almost no other center provides. We are sorry you did not find out sober living accommodations to your liking and will look into your concerns. Thank you again and we wish you the best!

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
The Kiloby Center for Recovery offers an Intensive Outpatient Program, which is three hours a day, for two or more days per week. This level of care is often appropriate for clients who have already finished detox, residential treatment or day treatment and are looking for a more flexible outpatient program as they transition back into their lives. Intensive Outpatient clients may stay at the Kiloby Sober Living House, at home or at nearby lodging. Intensive outpatient may be appropriate as a first level of care for those clients receiving the Naltrexone Implant.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

So I went to the kiloby center about 3 and a half or 4 years ago . At the time they had a sober living house to stay in if you were not from the area . Also worked with a detox place for before starting the outpatient program . The detox center I thought was really great , had great doctors nurses and staff that made the stay and detox bearable . Unfortunately I was not pregnancy tested when entering so I found out when I returned home to the East Coast that I was over 3 months pregnant . So I detoxed pregnant and was on my medicine during my whole time in the sober living house and in the kiloby center program . I don t know California laws but NJ and NY laws make you be pregnancy tested . Then the rest of the time was just unprofessional and surreal . Between the unorganized days , lack of communication and money hungry owner . Along with a counselor working for the kiloby center leaving with a newly sober patient and having a relationship while both staying in the sober living house . Also I was in the detox for about 12 days and then in the sober living and program for a month but got asked to leave the day before my flight because I was having outbursts not knowing why at the time . Later finding out I was 22 years old and having pregnant hormones mood swings along with being newly sober . I bet if I paid the $10,000 for the second month , my outburst wouldn t matter though . Since I was already leaving the next day with a flight ready to go . I had to either figure out somewhere to stay for the night since I couldn t stay in the sober living for one more night or get my flight switched to that day (day before my original flight) . Soooo even though I do think that their holistic methods can totally be helpful for people who are very spiritual and the usual 12 step program didn t help them, I would recommend finding a different place . If it was not for the admission/ center mom (I don t know what her actual job description is) then I don t know if I would of even made it a month . But thankfully I went home and my daughter is totally healthy and got the proper care I needed . I hope this place learns how to deal with newly sober people better and have a more professional environment .

I'm unable to fully share in words the profound impact my experience at the Kiloby Center has had in my life. I'm so very grateful to have had the privilege of experiencing the "magic" that happens on a daily basis at Kiloby. This is truly a place of unconditional love. The tools that they offer are priceless.

The Kiloby Center was my first experience of mindfulness, and I can t recommend it highly enough. It changed my life and I practice the living inquiries and listen to the guided meditations daily. They have caused me to realize the personality and the self is a construct and I am not stuck in my stories

Age 70, I chose to come to the Kiloby Center to work through childhood and developmental trauma. It was the right time and place to do both. The staff helped me do a trauma inventory and facilitated me in such a caring way that I began to change my perspectives on this life. Multi modalities including mindfulness, yoga, 5 rhythms, trauma release exercises, individual facilitation and group sharing helped me come alive to my feelings. After decades in Twelve Step programs, I was finally able to release guilt, shame, blame and fear. It was the best 3 months of my life and I recommend it to those of you who seriously want to change. It is not the place for the faint hearted or folks looking for an easy fix. Thanks so much to all the staff and courageous fellow travelers!

I've been in some form of therapy almost all of my adult life and this was by far the deepest and most integrative work i've ever experienced. the combination of mindfulness, somatic work and trauma release was very powerful. the staff are so skilled, loving and supportive...they are great at helping you identify events in your life that you never would have realized were traumatic and then to begin the healing process. i say "begin" because while there you are taught very practical and user-friendly tools to help you continue to transform your suffering after you've left the center.one of the central precepts in Buddhism is "do no harm"...i am finding as a result of this work that i am doing "less harm"... to myself and others.so grateful for these people and this revolutionary approach to recovery!

If you are seriously ready to heal and make a lasting change in your life, I would recommend this place. You are going to heal on a deep level and also learn to continue this healing on your own whenever needed..which is rare. I am forever grateful. All I can say, is if you stick with it, you may not ever look back!

Life-changing for me. The work that's being done here goes beyond anything I've encountered before. It helped me release lifelong-held trauma and beliefs about myself, others and the world. Read and check out Scott's books; or even better, schedule an inquiry session with one of the Kiloby facilitators and see for yourself. Very literally mind-blowing. Thank you and love to all on staff!
