About The Gooden Center

The Gooden Center provides substance use disorder, mental health and dual diagnosis treatment in Pasadena, California. This cozy home-like rehab is a haven for men to work on recovery while connecting with peers.

What started as a small organization of five Alcoholics Anonymous members and an episcopal bishop in 1962 has grown into a supportive space for thousands of men. You can access multiple levels of care, including residential, intensive outpatient and sober living.

Whether you need 24/7 structured support or can live at home while attending treatment, their programs aim to meet you where you are in recovery. You can participate in several proven and holistic treatment approaches, like weekly individual counseling, process and education groups, family groups, 12 Step programming, yoga and group meditation. They strive to help you foster healthy coping skills, improve impulse management and strengthen your communication skills.

What stands out most to me is their family treatment program. You’ll have countless opportunities to work on recovery with your loved ones in private sessions and multifamily group activities. I like this approach because you can heal together with your loved ones as well as the families of other peers. Having sessions with multiple families in the program can open your eyes to your shared similarities and help you learn from others.

Another incredible feature is their lifelong alumni aftercare program. They understand that completing treatment is just one step in recovery. Their alumni services connect you with helpful resources to benefit you in long term sobriety. For example, you can access a mentor, job training and placement and GED services for free. They also hold fun events, like barbeques, bowling nights and softball games to build a solid sober support network.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential clients reside at their flagship house, Bishop Gooden Home, on El Molino Avenue near historic Old Town Pasadena. During drug or alcohol treatment clients will learn skills to enhance coping mechanisms, strengthen impulse control, and improve communication. Patients will also learn alternative ways of dealing with relapse triggers and emotional and spiritual barriers. Length of stay is based upon the resident’s need and consultation with the clinical staff.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

IOP sessions are three hours in length and take place Tuesday through Saturday with sessions in the morning and evening to accommodate work and school schedules. IOP clients may live near to their outpatient rehabilitation center. Groups take place at one of their nearby facilities, where a room is set up in close proximity to resident living quarters.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Commonly known as "day treatment," a partial hospitalization program (PHP) is an intensive form of outpatient treatment where clients meet during the day and return home in the evening. PHP treatment doesn't require 24-hour care and often serves as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or a step-down after a residential program. With PHP treatment, you can receive daily support for 6 to 8 hours which includes evidence-based therapies and medication management. The cost of PHP treatment typically varies but averages 90 days.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in California teaches participants constructive ways to stay clean and sober. Treatment revolves around helping individuals stop using the substance they are addicted to and learn healthy habits to avoid relapse.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy in California is a method that therapists often use for the effective treatment of substance use disorders. It is based on the principle that substance abuse stems from unhelpful ways of thinking and patterns of behavior, which can be changed by helping the individual learn better ways of coping.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

The goal of couples therapy in California is to strengthen the couple's relationship. The therapist may take one or more approaches to counseling which may include the Gottman method, emotionally focused therapy, behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic couple's therapy.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

The use of experiential therapy can be helpful for the treatment of behavioral disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction. This method teaches you how to release negative emotions and cope with pain from the past. Activities such as art, music, and animal care are used to facilitate this process.

I CAN speak aboit getting 4 or 5 calls per day from thjs place... the MD is a joke. She dpesnt access patient documentation to knpw what medkcation a patient takes which is so unsafe. She will yell at you and become disrespectful and lie IF you cask questions or disagree with her unsafe behavior. I wouldnt trust a dovtor that cant communicate respectfully with my care. Up to you if you choose to.

STAY AWAY!!!If you want to recover in dilapidated squalor, surrounded by religious zealots and Joe Rogaine listeners, and have your controlled medication STOLEN from under lock and key by someone on their staff. I left after about six hours. They forgot to give me one of my medications when I left, when I returned for it, there were 10 capsules missing from the bottle. They acted like it was a total mystery.STAY AWAY!!!!UPDATE: the single meal I was given there has resulted in a nasty food borne illness due to the lack of compliance with food safety measures. (The food is left out at room temperature after being transported from offsite)

I stayed there for three months the therapist are professionals but a lot of the other staff is very unprofessional and work from a counterintuitive level ,I felt progress in my overall wellness but felt very uncomfortable and was harassed and bullied by the non therapist employees in the transition living the best care is kind and overwhelming clients with petty approaches and neglect is very confusing during mental health inpatient treatment Iwas really insulated and hurting the process I exercise pacient communication and have to take my life forward without out the overall disenfranchised wellness I experienced .
