About The Freedom Center

The Freedom Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is an office that helps individuals overcome various addiction types. Their outpatient program allows clients to receive high quality treatment while still living at home and taking care of their work, family or school responsibilities.

Their office combines a mixture of residential and clinical features. There’s a communal kitchen and dining hall, meeting spaces with plush furniture, and an activities room. The walls are painted in a clean white, but it might look a bit too medicinal for those who prefer a homey atmosphere.

When patients are assessed and a treatment plan is recommended, they’ll either be placed in the outpatient program, the intensive outpatient program or the partial hospitalization program. Each level of care varies based on the time commitment required. The parietal hospitalization program is ideal for clients who are either not ideal for inpatient rehab or are stepping down from rehab.

The intensive outpatient program is a step down from PHP and allows clients more time to do other things, such as school or work. The standard outpatient program is a good transition option for those almost ready to enter the aftercare plan.

All of these programs will feature individual and group counseling as a part of the treatment plan. The main therapeutic approaches that counselors use at this facility are cognitive (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). In addition to these evidence based treatments, patients can receive holistic treatments such as animal assisted therapy, acupuncture and life skills development.

The Freedom Center accepts private and public insurance for payment and will work to find payment options for individuals who don’t have insurance.

Caring about self awareness
Response from the owner1 month ago
Thank you for sharing positive words about The Freedom Center! Self-awareness and self-understanding is a critical life-skill that can help individuals build a positive sense of self and better understand others, too. This can help individuals overcome a variety of challenges in life including addiction and anxiety, while also helping them to learn, grow and build strong, positive connections with friends, family, and loved ones. It is our hope that teaching self-awareness in the community will foster a sense of purpose and fulfillment for those impacted by life's many challenges.

I had a great experience until the end of my IOP when I was discharged by my therapist through text message because of missed group meetings. I told her via text that I was sick and she knows I just got a new job as bills were piling. Instead of working with me and calling to check in I only get a text that says I m discharged from the program. I would understand if I was a client who didn t care but I did very well attended all the meetings prior to getting this job. I was not given any referrals or resources and have even asked referrals to trauma therapists and my therapist left me with none of these things. Very irresponsible and to make matters worse no one has contacted me to follow up. Very disappointing for someone new in recovery

He was discharged via text by his therapist and I was appalled. I have never met a clinician that would just discharge people over text instead of checking on them or having a discharge plan. Truly dangerous especially when working with people who are in recovery. I am so appalled with how this was handled and I sure hope others aren t being treated this way.UPDATE:I received a call from one of the directors who proceeded to essentially deny my fianc s experience due to him working with this specific clinician for years . Just because you have worked with someone for years does not mean they can t make a mistake. Every one of your clients should matter.I have consulted with professionals in this field who have said that this is completely unethical and can even be fatal to discharge someone NEW in RECOVERY without referrals, resources or check ins. This is absolutely heart wrenching for loved ones, my fiance found a community and thrived well with his groups but was disheartened by his experience with his therapist and ultimately administration. I just got texted resources/referrals only because I posted this review.Instead of wanting to make things right (offering a meeting, discussion even getting clarification from my fiance) , all we get is a text that says I hope your fiance does well in the future and appreciate your feedback. This is absolutely unacceptable and I hope nobody you treat ever has to go through something like this again.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab enables clients to focus exclusively on their recovery while living in a highly structured and supportive environment. Inpatient treatment is typically designed for clients who have just completed detox, are in early recovery, and/or are at an elevated risk of relapse. Their treatment generally involves intensive addiction counseling, including individual, group, and family counseling. Many inpatient rehabs also offer recovery-focused life skills training and/or holistic therapies, such as yoga, massage, and meditation.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Clients who are leaving inpatient rehab often choose to transition into an intensive outpatient program (IOP) to receive high-level support as they reintegrate into their home, workplace, and community. Intensive outpatient rehab also benefits those at risk of relapse. Clients typically participate in nine to 20 hours of treatment weekly, with modalities ranging from psychotherapy to addiction and recovery education. Many programs also provide medication assisted treatment (MAT) and complementary care, such as nutrition counseling, and acupuncture.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program typically partner with their case manager and care team to identify and access the services that best align with their recovery needs and goals. Rehab aftercare services are designed to evolve with clients' changing needs to promote their long-term sobriety. Care modalities are highly customized and may include a range of medical, mental health, and social service resources, including peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.
12-step icon12-Step
12 step programs provide accessible peer coaching for participants at all stages of their recovery journey. Meetings are peer-led, anonymous, free, and available multiple times per day in most communities. Participants also receive one-on-one mentoring by a self-selected sponsor. 12 step recovery is based on spiritual principles, which enable participants to understand their disease, accept responsibility for their choices, and relinquish control over that which is unchangeable. Religious affiliation isn't required and specialized formats are available.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Most sober living homes in Maryland are located in peaceful, quiet neighborhoods. These private residences are designed to offer a low-stress but structured environment where residents can focus on their ongoing recovery efforts and receive support to maintain sobriety. Several individuals, all of whom are in recovery, share the halfway house. This type of communal living helps decrease relapse, increase employment rates, and helps individuals hone their recovery skills.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
For intensive-level rehab treatment, 24-hour clinical care in Maryland is an essential tool. Medical staff are available around the clock to supervise the process, which involves cleansing the body of toxins. Close supervision is necessary due to the potential risks of withdrawal symptoms. Medical experts on-site are available to prescribe medications and other forms of treatment to address these symptoms and ensure a safe detox process.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Quitting drugs and alcohol on your own can cause uncomfortable and even dangerous side effects caused by the withdrawal process. In medically assisted detox, a team of licensed medical professionals will monitor your health, provide medication for potential withdrawal symptoms, and work to keep you safe and comfortable. Most people transition to an inpatient program or a maintenance program that uses medication assisted treatment (MAT).

Treatments

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I can't tell you how much this place means to me. They saved my life back in 2023, and they didn't forget me. I nearly gave up again in 2024, and Mary, Kirby, and everyone who's a part of this wonderful program came to my rescue again - making sure I had everything I needed to get there safely, have a place to rest and restore, and really work on myself this time. I don't think I could've made it without The Freedom Center. During program one day, I started having a panic attack, and Judy sat me down for all of 2 minutes, halting it in its tracks. No one has ever come close to anything like that for me. These people care, and these people know what they're doing. Let them help you, and they will. No matter what happens in my future, know that this will forever be a part of my family <3Shoutout to Ashlyn and David for being excellent therapists - Patrick as well, even though I couldn't grasp what he meant at the time (I needed to hear it). And, Federico for being the genuine and wise person he is.Sydney and everyone else, too. I won't forget you. You all made this possible.Things that might matter if you're considering this place:The housing they provide is spacious and comfortable. The staff is excellent. They respect your privacy. In PHP, food is provided and plentiful. In IOP, space for your own food is provided if you opt-in to their housing. Their new inpatient rehab is excellent - excellent nurses, staff, etc. You can pretty much do your own thing and get away with it, but you should participate because your life almost certainly depends on it. The regular outpatient will be great, but they're still working out the logistics. They have the experience. They know how to help. The rest is up to you.

The after care was awesome as I had the pleasure of staying at one of Kirby s homes. It was great as I was able to build friendships with others and meet people of character. Kirby did a great job supplying our needs. Overall gear experience. The follow up from Mary is above board. She has been consistent with checking in and that means a lot on so many levels of my journey in recovery. She cares truly and the check ins are priceless. Thank you both.

Spoke with a gentleman name Chris, very condescending in conversing with me in trying to seek help for a family member. You should consider regardless what I may sound like to you, never assume someone s inability to pay after quoting 1k a day. You don t know my status. I m sure this is a great facility unfortunately you Chris are deferring from the reflections this center can offer.

Response from the owner5 months ago
Dear Lisa, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We take all feedback seriously and aim to provide the highest level of care and service. We do not have anyone named Chris on our team, and $1,000 a day is not an accurate reflection of our treatment costs. It is possible that there was a misunderstanding or that you reached a different facility. We genuinely care about helping those in need and would love the opportunity to assist you. Please call us directly at (240) 720-3103 and ask for Corey during business hours. If you leave a message, we will return your call promptly to address this and provide the assistance you need. Thank you for your understanding and giving us a chance to correct this. Best regards, Corey Hassett Executive Director The Freedom Center

I appreciate everything from my experience here. The first day I got here almost a month ago and I was a complete mess. Crying to Seth in the office, and he told me This can be the first day of the rest of your life. I m certainly hoping that to be the case. Thanks also to my counselor Cathy as she always made me feel comfortable to talk and share my feelings with her. I have a great plan in place for leaving here thank I m feeling really good about. Thanks again to all the staff and the owner Corey for getting me in here when he did!
