About The Buckeye Ranch: Residential Campus

The Buckeye Ranch in Grove City, Ohio, is an addiction and mental health treatment facility that provides behavioral health support to children and families around central Ohio. The facility focuses on families and works to equip youth with the knowledge they need to heal and grow.

The Ranch provides residential treatment services as well as community and education based mental health services. They also offer integrated care and child welfare programs. Children and families can receive mental healthcare, family therapy and physical and nutritional healthcare. I like that this facility also provides access to social support and educational resources which are important when families are facing these types of challenges.

Community based care at Buckeye Ranch includes an intensive family support program. Participating families can receive intensive home based treatment, multisystemic therapy and functional family therapy. I think it’s important that they also integrate dual diagnosis treatment. This addresses any conditions that are occurring at the same time such as depression and substance abuse. The Ranch’s services can benefit children who have recently experienced changes in their grades, school disruptions or fights. Treatment also covers impulsive behavior, self harming behaviors and drugs or alcohol consumption.

The Grove location is currently undergoing an expansion, and a new building is expected to open by the summer of 2025. The newer building will increase the facility’s capacity to 96 total beds for residential services. This includes at least four crisis stabilization units. The expansion will also include renovations to the existing dining areas.

Reviews from former patients and community members reflect an overall positive outlook on the facility and the care they receive there. Some former patients mentioned enjoying the beautiful grounds on the ranch. Others mentioned how the staff will do anything to ensure the safety of the patients.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

12-step icon12-Step

Many treatment centers base their recovery models on the 12 step programming standard, which combines intensive peer support with spiritual, psychological, and emotional growth. Participants in 12 step recovery programs are expected to regularly attend group meetings, which are free, anonymous, peer-led, and open to the public. They are also required to select a sponsor to guide them through the recovery journey. These programs deploy spiritual principles to foster participants' self-understanding, forgiveness, acceptance, and accountability.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

Intervention services help family members prepare for a drug intervention in Ohio. During an intervention, family members typically read letters they have prepared that explain how the individual's substance abuse has affected their lives and relationships. Each family member also explains what they will do if the individual does not agree to get treatment. An intervention specialist offers support to guide this discussion and makes appropriate treatment recommendations.

partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program

Designed for individuals with moderate to severe addictions, a partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides a more intensive form of outpatient therapy. PHP treatment can serve as an alternative to inpatient hospitalization or as a step-down option after being discharged from a hospital or residential program. A partial hospitalization program typically requires a minimum of 20 hours weekly for an average of 90 days. Depending on your care plan, PHPs can include relapse prevention, medication management, and behavioral therapy services.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Ohio provides comprehensive treatment to address the physical and psychological needs of those struggling with substance use disorders. This may involve inpatient and/or outpatient care.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Therapists who apply motivational interviewing in Ohio don't try to confront clients or force advice onto them. Instead, they listen and come alongside clients to help them explore why and how they might decide to make changes for themselves.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Overall, my year experience as a staff was pretty decent. I encountered many children and many staff who genuinely cared about the kids . unfortunately, it was rough getting to work on time my supervisor Teresa. Miss T Basically ignored my attendance pretty much as long as I was helping her out. She would bend the rules when it would benefit her the second I took things to HR she switched. She literally tried to take my bonus away, so I went to HR thankfully HR was understanding and was able to give me my bonus but because of that miss T Decided that she was going to talk to the CEO about my attendance to get me fired ! I don t understand before I was coming in a little bit late it was all OK, but the second that I told on her for taking my bonus, she turns around and turn in my tardiness . So any new hires please be careful trust NOBODY. Literally everyone at that place is late, literally! Many staff can even Vouch this, some staff is even later than me. The crazy thing is, I don t even think I was at my final warning She literally decided to do this because I went to HR on her about her taking my bonus ! She used to make up rules that I had to follow specifically in order for me to get my bonus ! She got me fired Because I picked up overtime, she was on vacation. So because I didn t get it approved by her, she decided that she wasn t going to give me my bonus. And I have to text messages to prove soon as I went to HR. She got in her feelings and got me fired. I am old enough and woman enough to admit I was late but again if I was picking up her units and working for her, she wouldn t have had an issue ! Another staff literally just put in her two weeks notice because of her !Overall, I genuinely love the kids and I genuinely love working with kids, so I m still thankful for every thing !

In 2013, this place had its issues, but helped me tremendously though there were three multi-repeat residents in my unit, alone. It was the most disheartening experience to interview there and to see the units now. They are not even a shell of what they used to be. The lights were all off in one unit, only one light filtering from the small office window, with residents standing around taking turns playing music on an iPod. No more furniture making it a warm environment fit for healing, except for uncomfortable looking chairs and one table. This all would have NEVER happened in 2013 - we would have been engaged in activities, learning new coping skills, or talking with staff. Pomegranate got shut down, and the Buckeye ranch I m certain will be after them in the next 10-15 years, hopefully less. If you have had a bad experience here, please report it to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Take your kids to children s hospital if they are in need of help.

this place was a joke, i definitely got more trauma than help being here. i witnessed another resident cutting themselves and trying to hang themselves in front of me. a lot of drugs got on my unit nelson which was also a co-ed unit and a transgender male gave me fake pills and me and another female od. we both almost died and it was so scary. i felt very uncomfortable around the staff, at lot of staff made racial remarks to me and there was a group of boys who jumped a old lady and stole her car. she was a sweet lady too. it s a messed up crazy place. no stabilty. felt like jdc kinda and i was there before. i was there in 2022/2023

This place was like something out of a horror film for me. I was here for years. I try very hard to forget about my experience in The Buckeye Ranch s residential program. I feel like I need to speak up about my personal experiences and things I had to witness while in this facility, I d like to prevent any child from going through what I had to endure. I also would like to point out that there are many other ways to help your children without sending them away, if you do please take into consideration that they may leave this place with more issues and more trauma than they had to begin with. Just top 5 experiences I had to live through 1. Molested by another patient there 2. Witnessed staff abusing another patient 3. Witnessed many very brutal suicide attempts 4. Was jumped and attacked by other patients 5. Privacy did not exist, yes your minor child will be repeatedly strip searched in front of multiple adult staff it s a requirement, I was even watched while showering. There s so many more things wrong with this place and because of it I ll never fully be ok again, you truly lose all sense of dignity in this place. Have more questions reach out. If you went through this, reach out, maybe we can help others.

I worked here a couple of months ago. This place is an absolute joke. I went through the orientation and thought it was going to be an amazing place and it seemed like they actually cared. I was so wrong. The next week when we actually got placed into houses, everything was not how they portrayed it to be. The techs in the house made me feel uncomfortable and would laugh at the kids and make fun of them behind their back constantly. They did not practice what they preached. They did everything that I was told not to do in my orientation such as bringing in outside food and eating it right in front of the kids knowing they can t have it. The next week I dropped off my keys and never came back and I m so glad. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE, THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEM!
