About The Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy & New Directions

The Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy treats individuals with opioid, alcohol, and other drug addictions in the Brooklyn, New York area. Whether you’re trying to completely detox from drugs or alcohol, or you simply want to take advantage of their outpatient and aftercare therapy options, there is a lot to be excited about with this particular clinic.

Apart from just addiction, they treat co-occurring conditions, as well. One of their modalities of care includes cognitive behavioral therapy, which can be extremely effective if done right.

Their outpatient program offers a few interesting therapy options. Some of the more expected ones include individual psychotherapy, group psychotherapy, collateral family counseling, and marriage counseling.

But aside from these, they also have some more holistic options like play therapy. When you first start, they’ll give you an initial intake assessment so that they can learn the most effective way to help you. Then they’ll give you a mental status evaluation. After that, you’ll begin your treatment and receive aftercare once the main treatment is completed.

I ve used this place twice over the last several years and both experiences and therapists have been great. I m shocked to see so many bad reviews because that hasn t been my experience at all. Ms. Levin was a great therapist, I can t say enough good things about her. She s very compassionate and caring. Molly is another great therapist and Julissa and Ashley are both great whenever I reached out via email my needs were always addressed promptly! In case you all don t hear it enough thank you for all you do!

I empathize with the individuals who left 1-star ratings. I too have experienced my share of mishaps during the initial stages of intake.I did have to call multiple times, I did have to follow up on more than one occasion and I did have to reschedule an intake session because I too spoke with someone who had VERY nasty behaviors. Instead of engaging I told her that I wasn t interested with continuing the process and took the necessary steps to be reassigned. Did it take time? Yes.I m one year in with my therapist who is truly an amazing individual and even worked with them to have my daughter assigned. That too took sometime but I got the sense that the staff to patient ratio may be off causing some administrative issues but once assigned things go a lot smoother. My therapist is human too, while it s her job she is human. I don t expect her to show up for me to 100% every session. Sometimes I get 75% and I m ok with that because I m sure she needs a session at the end of the day.

During the pandemic my sister s panic attacks came back full strength after having covid, pneumonia in both lungs, one of the people she was around passed away. ( to the point she was in the ER everyday due to the panic attacks) .She call this establishment since she went here 7 /8 years ago.She was assigned a therapist via virtually but realize she knew the therapist from a friend... she then stopped talking to the therapist immediately. The next day my sister Spoke with Ms A ( a supervisor/ manager) when I mean she was unprofessional. How could you have a job working with individuals who are already mentally unstable, going through life with so much and speak to them in such a manor!!! My sister ended up getting meds from her PCP and just tried to remember all the things she learned 7/8 years ago... but now she s having panic attacks again and she s lost on where to go because of the unprofessionalism last time. This is why individuals don t seek help, and why we see so many mentally ill individuals in the streets.

Other Forms of Payment

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Substance rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from substance abuse, including alcohol and drug addiction (both illegal and prescription drugs). They often include the opportunity to engage in both individual as well as group therapy.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Been going here off and on for many years. It's the best place for me. My current therapist is the best. They help you connect childhood to adulthood, in order to help you relearn things in a healthy way, setting boundaries and eliminating codependency so you can live a fulfilling life.

My experience with Brooklyn Psychotherapy have been good, but since 2022 began, that experience has changed. I have called them several times, left messages and no one returns my calls. I really don't know what is going on with the Center right now. No complaints against the two therapists that I've had, they have been awesome. My therapist went out on medical leave in 2021 and I decided to wait for her to return to resume my sessions, however Brooklyn Psychotherapy continues to bill my insurance and haven't been returning my calls about resuming my sessions. I will be reporting them for insurance fraud. Maybe if they see this public review, they will decide to call me.

If I could give this place a 0 rating I would. Seriously avoid this place at all costs. The staff is unprofessional and never call you back, you'll have to call them a million times yourself. Then for them to act as if you're annoying them. Oh and if you don't like your therapist or need a change for whatever reason yeah don't they will drop you. Go elsewhere if you need help, it's hard enough seeking mental health practitioners. This place should be investigated for medical malpractice.

I've been seeing my therapist for about 6 months now and it's been life changing. I was referred to the clinic by a friend and have since referred two more friends. This was my first experience in talk therapy and having a professional, non-biased listener in my life has helped my anxiety and help me discover various beliefs I have as a person. Highly recommend.
