About Tanager Place

Tanager Place is a comprehensive child and family wellness center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Their mission is to help families throughout the area whose children, teens, or young adults are struggling with behavioral health or mental health issues like addiction.

This organization actually has several programs and ways that they help youth with drug and alcohol addiction or other behavioral health needs. They offer either outpatient care or residential care so your child or teen can get the appropriate level of treatment and supervision. In some cases they can even come to your home for treatment.

The counseling here is highly customized to your child and your family. They’ll work with your child to help them better understand addiction and recovery. Better yet they’ll help them develop strategies for a healthier future. What I found especially noteworthy about this treatment center though is that they will treat mental health conditions along with treating addiction. They understand how these two can play into each other and will make sure your child gets the specialized treatment they need.

Tanager place needs to shut down within a week I was there the same kid that had a history of violent behaviors and hit some kid up side the head with a paddle lock and had to get stitches. stabbed me in the temple heading back to my room. The kid was extremely dangerous and was known to attack others. When I got stabbed I wa left there with blood pouring on the floor while all staff attended to him to keep him away from everyone. The other kids there didn t know how to help so they were grabbing towels to try to clean it up. These kids were aged 9-15 When the ambulance came I thought it was for me NOPE it was for the kid to get taken to hospital for stabbing me for mental evaluation . Took hours before I was able to actually go to the er . Had to get stitches.I tried running away because that place was not safe. staff full on football tackled me which is not allowed. When I was tackeled I was hit so hard my head bounced off a tree stump in the ground and got knocked out I remember waking up to the staff screaming at me to get up and go in side as I have a hand full of blood I couldn t speak I was so concussed I couldn t really move they dragged me inside threw me into a room and I sat there for HOURS before I received medical attention had to get 9-12 staples I was complaining the entire time I was in there room how I was dizzy and blurred vision and that I don t feel good and begging to go to hospital and the nurse said to quit I m fine . When I got to the hospital the doctors were shocked . My scalp was open and like ripped back. My mom pulled me out of this place and I m glad she did because I could have been killed this place is a disaster. Kids stabbing each other. Fighting each other staff fighting back staff were extremely unprofessional all were bearly 20-25 this place is not a safe place at all. Staff were on power trips. Orchard place in desmoines is the best residential facility in the state. Staff care, safe restraints on campus school. The staff are actually trained to deal with kids behaviors. Very rarely would u have violent behaviors . If you are in a position to send your kid to a residential facility for help. PLEASE do NOT send them to tanager place. I felt so bad there were little kids there .. I was there for a total of 2 weeks was in hospital 3 times. Stabbed twice once with a chess peice and one with a broken off metal attenna from a radio. Same kid. Cracked open my head from getting food ball tackled from a staff. Watched the staff laugh at kids behaviors instead of trying to deesculate. When my mom pulled me from this place I had money, a wallet and a lot of my stuff still at the place. They would return any of our phone calls or anything blocked my mom s number. So I never got it. We would have drove there and got it but my mom lived 3 and a half hours away I believe that s how far it is. I was 15 when I was at tanager. I am now 21. I would not recommend ANYONE to send there kid to this place. It is not safe. I had to sleep with my eyes open because it wasn t safe.

I use to be at tanager 2 to 3 years ago my experience there was really good and I had one of the best successful discharges there, and I was in a good cottage with good staff members and kids. The good staff that use to work at Tanager don't work there anymore and after they stopped working there everything went down hill. I don't recommend parents sending there kids to Tanager regardless if there there for suicidal issues or non suicidal issues because over the years tanager has become a really bad place. The overnights fall asleep and there not suppose to and then while there asleep kids will elope/ leave campus and the higher ups blame the kids when staff need to watch the kids and do there normal checks up, yet alone THEIR JOBS!!! Staff that are with suicidal kids they won't do anything to help them, I wasn't suicidal at all when I was at tanager but the kids in other cottages were and it's just so CRAZY how kids would hurt themselves and staff get away with it when they are the ones that let kids get a hold of stuff for kids to hurt themselves. Staff at tanager never really care about the kids since kids run away and leave campus all the time. Hopefully this helps parents and or kids/teens that end up going here. Best of luck.

I went to tanager a couple years ago and I may not have seen how much it helped me then but I realize now. I'm positive every staff member would be happy to help any kid as long as they wanted it or asked. Almost every one of the therapists do an excellent job in my opinion and they all are their cus they do genuinely care. Even if y'all don't think so. The only bad part about tanager i would have to say is the kids. Having to live in a cottage with 10 other kids going through possibly similar traumas as yours or completely different and the kids seem to just, clash. But yeah

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Our son was unsuccessfully discharged due to behaviors. A facility that is trained to care for kids with behaviors and they discharge. Yet, when asked for a certificate of transfer signed they refused. SO the safety concerns they didn't want to deal with were ok for everyone in our home to deal with..The therapist we had was great but administration not so much.

I was sent there because I was dealing with suicidal tendencies, and in dark a moment were I was feeling suicidal, I needed to talk to staff but they refused then and told me to go to my room and they'd come see me later. Because I was suicidal and didn't receive help when I was feeling that way, I did try to commit suicide. I was in a coma for four days and the doctors didn't know if I was going to live. Tanager Place then discharged me and cut off communication because they knew my mom could rightfully sue.

I interned here when I was in undergrad at University of Iowa and Tanager is truly a well run facility. The staff is well trained and they provide structured, supportive, and comprehensive therapeutic interventions for children with myriad needs. My experience here was exceptional!

This place is ok for kids but if you re looking for a job I wouldn t suggest it management does not care about staff and you ll get close to the kids just to get let go for little to nothing and I can only imagine how it feels for the kids who constantly have people coming in and out of their lives! Oh and after they fired me they took over 500$ out my check!

I lived there back in 1984 and 1985. It was the best place my social worker placed me in. I miss all my friends I made there and all the staff that took care of us. I sometimes wish I could go back in time and be there again with everyone. I love and miss you all!!
