About Summit Academy

Summit Academy is a private residential school in Herman, Pennsylvania. Their 122-acre campus welcomes court-ordered young men aged 13-17. They specialize in at-risk services, integrating trauma informed care with substance abuse and mental health treatment.

Their program focuses on helping young men improve their lives for the future. Many who attend this program have experienced significant trauma and life challenges. They provide a safe space for healing and growth to help young men redirect their lives. You’ll have access to academics, therapy, counseling, community service, athletics, arts, and vocational training.

I love how this program focuses on holistic healing and personal development. You won’t just have access to proven therapeutic interventions but also a supportive and encouraging environment to explore your passions. They offer trades training in welding, carpentry, auto repair, screen printing, and more. You’ll also benefit from education assistance, with the opportunity to earn your GED, diploma, or college credits.

Their campus also stands out to me. You’ll recover in a vast community with peers who can resonate with your experiences. With access to a fishing pond, sports fields, and a swimming pool, you can improve overall well being while gaining the skills to promote long-term recovery.

outpatient iconOutpatient

The Day/Evening Program is designed to provide an alternative to institutionalization or transitional after-care following residential placement. The support, structure and guidance provided to these students enables them to grow and develop personally while remaining engrained in their home, school and/or community environments. By attending program on-site at The Academy just four days per week, the students in the Day/Evening Program are afforded the opportunity to maintain community employment, attend post-secondary education programs or focus on family reunification efforts and counseling.

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients receiving services from a rehab aftercare program are usually stable and in the maintenance phase of recovery, having completed detox and/or intensive inpatient treatment. Rehab aftercare services can vary widely based on clients' individual and evolving needs, but often include peer coaching, relapse prevention support, 12 step program induction, and medical, mental health, and social service referrals. Individual care plans are typically developed by the client in partnership with their case manager and care team.

12-step icon12-Step

12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).

They believe that education is critical to a young man’s development and future success. So they created an environment that maximizes the potential for meaningful learning. On average, students arrive at The Summit Academy functioning two to three years below their appropriate grade level. To accelerate their skills, they offer strong individual attention, a computer-equipped Learning Center and year-round education, as well as daily, supplemental remedial instruction in both Math and Language Arts.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

Drug rehab in Pennsylvania is devoted to the treatment of addiction. Levels of care, treatment methods, and settings differ, but the aim of each program is to end drug dependency and empower participants to achieve long-term recovery.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

The road to self-sufficiency is paved with desire, determination and knowledge. When their young men and women are exposed to hands-on training in one of their Industrial Trade classes, they acquire each of these things, as well as the ability to control their future. Students can receive trade instruction and employability skills in areas of: Food Service, Woodshop, Building & Custodial Maintenance.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They get your kid lie to you and put your kid in situations that are unsafe because they are use to dealing with kids with no parents or support system so stay on top of what's going on with your child

I was recently locked up at summit and it was all around one of the best experiences I've had in my life. The staff was very helpful and their academic department is very good. Summit gave me the opportunity to show people that Im a better person than what I had portrayed myself to be. I thank the staff at summit and if any of you see this I want to say thank you to Mrs. Alyssa, Gretchen, Mr. Beznecher, Stew, Bobby, Ray, Rhett, Mrs. Danielle, Emory, Beau, and Brian.. You all told me that I was better than untold myself I was and showed me that I am and I just want to say that I appreciate everything you guys did for me and I hope you all continue helping troubled youth and continue pointing them down the right path
