About St. Joseph’s Addiction Treatment and Recovery Centers

Located in Saranac Lake, New York, is St. Joseph’s inpatient treatment facility for substance use disorders. The 67-bed coed program for adults offers stays of up to 90 days, depending on a client’s individual needs. They specialize in addiction treatment and dual diagnosis treatment i.e. clients who have a substance use disorder and mental health disorder at the same time.

One of the standouts of St. Joseph’s is its trauma-focused approach to treatment, which means that therapeutic interventions take into account the impact trauma can have on a person’s psychological, social, biological, and neurological development. Therefore, treatment aims to empower clients to re-establish control over their addiction behaviors and their lives in general.

Inpatient treatment for substance use disorder at St. Joseph’s includes individual and group counseling, medication-assisted treatment, self-help meetings, and psychiatric services for those who need it. Plus, clients can attend a number of specialty groups including yoga, exercise classes, women-specific programs, mindfulness-based relapse prevention, anger management, and GED classes.

While clients report that the rooms could do with updating, the calming mountain environment offers stunning views and the opportunity to connect with nature.

Medical briefcase icon Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient rehabs offer an intermediate level of care for clients who do not require the kind of intensive supervision and support an inpatient program typically provides. Many clients transition into outpatient care immediately after exiting inpatient treatment. Others enter outpatient programs upon completing detox. Some facilities offer ambulatory medical detox for clients who do not require hospitalization. Most outpatient rehabs offer a combination of services, including addiction counseling, life skills training, and medication assisted treatment (MAT).

inpatient iconInpatient

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Residents at St. Joseph usually stays for 90 days. Their comprehensive program focuses on client-centered care.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

12-step icon12-Step

Their intensive treatment model is based on a multidisciplinary team approach and utilizes many principles espoused by the philosophies of the self-help fellowships of both Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. 12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.

24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care

For many different stages and therapies offered during addiction treatment, it's essential to offer 24-hour clinical care in New York. often involves medication treatment for drug or alcohol detox. The withdrawal symptoms experienced during detox can be dangerous, but having medical experts on-site around the clock means someone is always there to step in and provide emergency medical care when and if it is ever needed.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

family iconFamily Therapy

Residents also participate in Family Program sessions which educate both residents and their family members about the destructiveness of chemical dependency as a "family disease", and to assist in breaking through denial on the part of the both residents and families. Of note, St. Joseph's Family Program was the first residential offering in the country, and has served as a model for treatment facilities nationally.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

Recreational therapy (aka therapeutic recreation) uses creative and fun activities to help with addiction recovery. Recreational therapists lead patients in entertaining and engaging activities like sports or games; art (drawing, painting, sculpture); drama, music, and dance; and/or community outings (field trips) to improve patients' physical, social, and emotional well-being.

art-brush iconCreative Arts Therapy

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

St. Joseph's saved my life. Although at first, I went there against my will, I'm happy and grateful for ending up here. When I left and looked back in perspective, I realized how miserable my life would've been if I hadn't had the opportunity to go here. Special thanks to my ... Read More

It's a joke. Everything is out of place. I was a patient there for 77 days mandated. Thankfully I got to leave two weeks early! But the lectures have nothing to do with recovery, it's basically what the counselors pull off Google. Reword it to avoid copyright slap it on a power point and hope there's a Ted Talk to sum it up in a way that the residents will maybe listen. They force everyone to participate and over schedule the day with nothing but drama and "hygiene" time but it's really find something to do that doesn't involve living the building or walking around the building. How dare we talk about our "war stories" or use there it might trigger us. But we've got to expose our feelings daily. And the website has not been updated since 2003. Bring your Crocs wear leggings do whatever you want just don't fraternize with the opposite gender men with get women pregnant. Women will get men sick. Makeup makes your a sult and cologne makes you a punk. Stay home if you can.

Absolutely horrible experience. Couslers are uneducated and lack the will for adequate care. The facility it self is nice from its outside, inside where 90 perfect of time is spent feels like an upscale prison. Look else where for treatment!

Would be 0 stars if this were an option. I was recently a patient here. I witnessed multiple people multiple times breaking this facilities rules. Bringing food to their room, getting haircuts, changing rooms, and leaving the facility to go to the local store, yet these patients were allowed to stay. No write-ups or being placed on "restriction" ( seems all they can get done in a timely manner is their form of discipline ). Some of the staff is extremely vindictive and enjoys making things harder on you, rather than helping you, which made me question why they were in the addition field at all. They treat adults like children, especially with their way of getting the attention, which is yelling "TIME" and sometimes ringing a bell, which gave me memories of preschool when the teacher would raise their hand. But the absolute worst thing that happened to me brought the end of stay. I was assaulted in my sleep by another client and had to make a trip to the local hospital for stitches. The plan was I would return, but after I was done at the ER I called for a ride back and was informed that I would not be welcomed back because I took some of my belongings with me. They still have my wallet and cash I brought and I cannot get in touch with them. The patient who assaulted me was not immediately discharged yet I was for bringing my belongings to the ER. Same thing for the man who left the facility to go to the store for smokes. There priorities are entirely in the wrong place. OASAS (NYS office of addiction services) would be smart in breaking ties with St. Joseph's. Please find another facility to get proper care.

DO NOT COME to this sunken ship of a facility if you are not mandated, and even if you are, try to find somewhere else to appease your judge. I had a 28 day stay that was not mandated and spent the first 1/2, yes half, of that WITHOUT a counselor. They never contacted my family about family sessions even tho they took their information and said they would. Basically all they do is reprimand you for arbitrary rules they have such as. No whistling, humming, hooded sweatshirts, bouncing a ball, looking in the direction of a member of the opposite sex (patients) ECT.... Basically no program, 1 lecture (30-40 minutes), 1 small group (45-60 minutes) and 1 AA meeting a day. Otherwise the time is yours to twiddle your thumbs or do a puzzle or pingpong or read. No Television (even the news). No Ice , No caffeine, No sugar, No Haircuts. No say in your recovery whatsoever and no fun. Worst experience of my life. Please take the honest review to heart and don't send your loved ones here. Would be a giant mistake when there are much better programs out there. 3.0 on Google and falling for sure. All positive reviews are from years ago. I have struggled with addiction for years and been to a few programs, this by far and away takes the crown as worst facility i have ever set foot in. Watch out for Claire ( who is spiteful, disrespectful and seems to enjoy making your stay harder rather then helping people who are there for that exact reason. Also she Will barge into male patients room and without knocking), Tammy, and DeEtte if your unfortunate enough to have to go here. If your time is short enough, take jail instead. On a positive note Jeff, Edward, and in some sense Lauren were very good at their jobs.

Just left the facility today and I gotta say if I could give a no star review I would. This Rehabilitation center is a FRAUD!!! 90% of the patients there are mandated/coming from jail to do a 90 day program. Luckily I was only there for 28 but i forced myself to stay everyday because I have legal issues myself but I gotta say if you are going through substance abuse issues I wouldn t go here at all. On a side not the staff are horrible and selfish and the whole program is literally patient ran. You have 2 groups that are ran by actually staff. Again if it wasn t for the mandated patients coming to this facility then I would believe this place would go outta business they are fraud and just use your insurance money to benefit themselves and don t care about you one bit. To them your just money. By far the worst rehab I ve ever have witnessed in my life. WOULDNT RECOMMEND!!! What Justin H said was 100% what this place is. FRAUDS!!! Oasis needs to shut this place down asap

Was mandated to do 90 days at this place, I m only giving it a one star because the food was good and that was about it, very understaffed, no groups about recovery at all. Please don t send your loved one here if they need help with substance abuse because they don t try to help or inform you on anything about your drug of choice like I said you only have one good group and that would be the small group With Drew and other than that there s nothing but free time and if you didn t come in with depression you are definitely going to have some before you leave st joes. They should be shut down for lying about this program telling people about the amenities at there vet substance abuse program making people think that there going to be at this really nice substance abuse program and sending them to the building next door where you can t access any of the amenities. They should be doing group after group of recovery topics but nahh this place is a fraud and just reeling in insurance money and not doing anything that should really be going on in a recovery program but I want to give jeff a shout out there because he went above and beyond to get bands to come play there and get people smiling and having fun in recovery, YOUR THE MAN JEFF KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING. Oh yeah I ended up leaving 26 days in and just went to jail because it was practically like being in jail just without the bars, they don t want you to have any fun can t listen to music no television not even the news in the morning, you only get 4 phone calls a week and there only 10 minutes long, they have all the equipment to do zoom calls with your family but they don t allow that. Please don t send your loved ones here if they are really trying to get help this place is only running because of judge mandates, look at all the other bad reviews on this place. IF YOU HAVE A HELIO HEALTH INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT IN YOUR AREA GO THEIR THEY HAVE AMAZING PROGRAMS AND WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR ADDICTION, DONT GO TO ST JOE s GO TO ELEMENTS WITH HELIO HEALTH IF YOU HAVE TO DO 90 DAYS OR IF YOU ONLY HAVE 30 DAYS GO TO HELIO HEALTH WILLOWS INPAITENT BOTH AMAZING PROGRAMS

I went to St Joseph's detox in November and I thought that it was the best detox that I have been to. It was quiet, peaceful. The staff was awesome, very compassionately. That is what I needed for detox, just to be able to detox in peace!

This place is meant to be punishment for a life of bad choices, pain, and addiction. If that sounds like something your into rather than compassion, care, and concern then this place awaits your penance. During my stay there I ve had unqualified male staff (ex-police officer) threaten and degrade me in front of the community. They have their tolken minorities there for their quota (I am Hispanic) however this place is undoubtedly racist. This place left me with unnecessary memories I would love to forget. Please look elsewhere.

Almost exactly 20 years ago I went to Rose Hill for 3 months, I was angry and scared and just wanted to be home with the people I thought were my friends. The time I spent at Rose Hill was one of the most defining experiences of my life. Biking, hiking, volleyball, basketball, weight lifting, learning how to build meaningful relationships with other people, learning daily structure and basic responsibility, the staff, the food, all of it.I came to Rose Hill scared, angry, misunderstood but I left feeling like I had re-discovered a relationship with myself, then when I returned home my old people, places, and things left me feeling lonely and lost, but I knew the direction I wanted to take my life because I understood there was more to life than I was allowing myself to have. Now I'm an adult with a family, a home, and a peaceful life. The journey from there to here was not easy, it was not perfect, I made so many mistakes and experienced many dark times, but I would not have known how to navigate myself away from those things without my experience at Rose Hill.I hope that little has changed there in the past 20 years, it truly was an amazing place.
