Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

ECT is a form of treatment in which controlled electric currents are passed through the brain, sometimes causing short seizures. Treatments are done under general anesthesia. ECT appears to change brain chemistry for the better, and has been shown to provide fast and sometimes dramatic improvements in severe mental health conditions that can exist alongside addiction, including depression, bipolar disorder, psychosis, and suicidality. ECT is also often used by those who prefer it to taking medication.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

The care teams at St Mary s Hospital saved my life, from doctors and nurses in the ER Dept to the main hospital doctor and nurse teams on the floor after my admittance for 6 days. I am on blood thinners, had major oral surgery and hours laters began bleeding excessively and constantly for hours. I went into afib, my bp dropped, and I passed out any time I tried to stand. There were 2 ER visits; the doctor at the 1st one was able to control the bleeding and pain and I was sent home. But it didn t last. At the 2nd 911 call and ambulance to ER, I was admitted. The doctors and nurses are excellent. I felt heard and received excellent care. Not everything was perfect, there were a few hitches, but after 2 blood transfusions, with the bleeding stopped, I improved. I highly recommend St Mary s Hospital. My experiences at Mercy (due to my heart condition) were horrendous. St Mary s care teams, from medical, to nutrition, to Physical Therapy, is how the system should work, with the needs and care of the patient first. I am grateful to all who helped me.

The L&D is top notch. I had both my babies there, in 2020 and 2024. Even at the height of the pandemic, the care was till incredible.

My experiences at SSM St. Mary's Hospital have been positive. Whether it's been security, valet (Martha is wonderful), the parking lot attendants, receptionists, everyone is terrific and easy to work with..

I have been to this ER on a few different occasions and will not be coming back. This past time was on Sunday. I could not bare any weight on my ankle and when I first got there they promptly got me to X-rays, I then waited 6 hours just to be discharged with out ever speaking to a Dr. They listed my injury as a ligament sprain but not once did any imaging to see ligaments. They gave me an ace bandage and sent me away. I ended up going to urgent care the next day because something is not right and I couldn't walk. Urgent care gave me a referral to an orthopedic Dr and a walking boot and told me to never go back to this hospital because if I would've been seen by a Dr they would've done more imaging or atleast put my foot in a boot until I could get seen by a specialist. If I could rate it a 0/5 stars I would. I do not suggest going here at all. This wasn't the first time I went and was discharged without the Dr actually seeing me and having to take other means to getting the help I needed. I've been 4 times last year and seen the Dr once, and even then it was for like one minute and he discharged me without doing an exam.If you can drive a little further and go somewhere else. I feel like they make you wait forever just to be discharged without ever seeing a Dr. There's a handful of nice nurses but many of the nurses are bitter also. Not to your face persay but every single time I go in the rooms to get checked in or blood work done, etc. They're always talked bad about patients out in the waiting room which is 100% unacceptable to be doing that Infront of other patients.Again do NOT go here.

Worse hospital in St. Louis unprofessional staff. Staff literally laughing and joking playing games on their phones while I m literally dying in the room no one came to check on me people just walked by and stared at me. St marys needs to be condemned and shut down or a management change

The most horrific patient care and hospital service I've ever witnessed. My 88-year-old mother-in-law was transported to Sisters of St. Marys (SSM) located at 6420 Clayton Rd, Richmond Heights, MO by ambulance due to extreme joint pain and swelling which impeded her ability to stand or walk. Upon arrival to the emergency room, she was made to wait in the emergency room waiting area for 12 hours before being taken in for treatment! After finally being taken into the treatment area, she waited an additional 2 hours before receiving a prescription dose Tylenol for pain and an additional 2 hours before fluid was extracted from her knee. Prior to being taken into the treatment area, she was called on four separate occasions to have her vitals taken over and over! This procedure was followed for practically every patient who had the patience or perhaps no other choice but to endure this very awkward process. This process seemed so unusual that it appeared to be a stall tactic by hospital staff as a substitute for treatment. I observed this treatment of patients over and over for14 hours while in the waiting area. During this 14 hour wait, I observed patients who were in severe pain begging for help and or attention. The staff was completely insensitive or might I say "desensitized" and robotic-like to their cries and pleas for help. Patient care and service was so poor and lacking that several patients walked out after waiting for 2 or 3 hours following their initial intake. The only service that I observed that was performed within an acceptable time frame for most patients was the initial intake which varied anywhere between 15-20 minutes. After the initial intake, patients sat for 2-4 hours to have their vital signs checked over and over. Meanwhile, patients needing assistance to get to the bathroom or those who were wheelchair bound and in need of mobility assistance were ignored or barely acknowledged. Patents had to beg other patients to escort them to the restroom! I observed staff that were so uncaring and unresponsive and solely focused on whatever "one" task they were responsible for (of which patient care was not primary) that they completely ignored patient's pleas for help. I think SSM should be placed under new leadership at the highest levels through first-level supervision given the quality of patient care, service, and empathy is severely lacking and directly reflects on management's expectations of its employees and a clear lack of accountability across the board. I would advise anyone seeking medical attention to stay away from SSM and by all means not allow a vulnerable loved one to be treated at this hospital. SSM provides horrible patient care services. Their failure to provide quality patient care and service to those in need is reprehensible and is in violation of Joint Commissionstandards. . For the sake of your health and safety, stay away from this hospital.

I m giving 5 stars because the nurses, techs, and doctors were fantastic. The food wasn t the problem but getting the orders right seemed to be an issue. I was there from Tuesday night through Saturday afternoon and most of my meals were missing something- condiments or a supplement beverage I was supposed to receive 2x a day. The food is an outsourced vendor that SSM/St Mary s should find a better way to communicate between patient and vendor staff. They need an online portal where patients can choose selections based on their dietary restrictions.
