About Yuma VA Clinic

The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System – Yuma CBOC is located in Yuma, Arizona. They provide outpatient primary and behavioral health care services for veterans, military members and their families. If you’re struggling with drug or alcohol addiction you can visit the clinic for counseling support. They accept self pay, private insurance and military benefits.

Something I like about this clinic is that they offer help on the same day you ask for it. There aren’t any long wait times. You might even qualify for help without enrolling in a VA health care plan. When you visit them they’ll evaluate your symptoms, talk to you about your condition, and help you create goals for recovery.

Their goal is to support your mental health and overall emotional wellbeing. They offer individual and group counseling sessions to help you address the disease of addiction as well as any co-occurring psychological conditions such as anxiety and depression. If you need more intensive care beyond their outpatient program they can help you find resources within the VA healthcare network, including residential rehab treatment programs.

car-building iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

house-medical iconAftercare

Rehab aftercare programs support clients' successful reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Drug rehab aftercare presumes that recovery requires life-long support. These programs typically offer a wide variety of services customized for the clients' unique and evolving needs. Clients may receive vocational training and career counseling, housing assistance, legal aid, peer coaching, and 12 step program induction, among other services. Clients' case managers often play a lead role in rehab aftercare planning.

clipboard-medical iconMedically Assisted Detox

The safest way to remove addictive substances from your body is done under the care of licensed medical professionals. Known as medically assisted detox, this level of care is typically in an inpatient setting with a team of medical experts that may include doctors, nurses, and mental health clinicians. Medications like Suboxone, methadone, or Vivitrol may be administered to help alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

Individual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Couples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Family Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life Skills

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Experiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Ive been in the VA health care for 20 years and have had 5 major surgeries with great success in all. Ive never had a problem scheduling appointments and have been treated with excellent care. If its so terrible I cant figure why a person would go there for health care? I dont think anyone is required to use the system. Keep up the good care for us VA doctors and nurses please. Thanks to you all!

Called at 0810 and still on hold at 0855. They transfered my call to Tucson. This is to be expected at the Yuma VA clinic.

They need to just shut this clinic down. Its worthless.

1

how can it have 3 stars its close down cause it sucks!!! Worse VA primary care I seen since 1989. Poor veterans, lazy incompetent doctors and staff. Shameful 3rd world countries have much better service. Go to San Diego VA, there you will be treated like a human. This clinic is a wasted of Gov tax payer money..Dr Lester, Dr Ozuna & Jamie shame on all you.

Hard working group of folks at this clinic. They do not receive enough praise for what they do. I think that Vets sometimes fail to realize that it is a Government organization very similarly ran as the DoD when we were all active duty. With that being said, it is not perfect. However, I can only speak for myself. They do everything they can for me and I am grateful for them and the work they put in despite all the red tape they have to navigate through to provide good patient care.-Jesse

Totally messed up my prescription glasses. Won t correct their mistake.

2

The Yuma VA clinic is the place in the city of Yuma where they make people wait outside. The line can be 20 people long. It s Yuma, not known for its mild temperatures. For me not an issues, but watching some of the elderly Vets in wheelchairs wait outside it s ridiculous. Learn to manage your appointments so people aren t outside for an hour.
