About South Shore Child Guidance Center

South Shore Child Guidance Center is an outpatient clinic in Freeport, New York. They’ve been around since 1955. Their clinic offers outpatient mental health and substance use treatment to children, teenangers, and adults. They take pride in offering a multicultural approach and bilingual services.

They feature individual and family therapy for adults and children. If you’re in need of home-based crisis interventions or school support services, this might be the program for you. They also have a mobile crisis team waiting to address your mental health crisis and get you the immediate treatment you deserve.

Regarding their substance use services, you have the opportunity to engage in chemical dependency education classes and medication assisted treatment in addition to counseling services. One thing that stands out to me is that they also offer a DWI offenders program. They also work with students who need psychotherapy at J.W. Dodd Middle School in Freeport, Roosevelt Middle School, and Uniondale High School.

If you’re in need of specialized services for intellectual and developmental disability or behavioral health issues, this program offers different types of treatment for that. For those that have an intellectual or developmental disability, they offer clinical and day services. They can also assist with helping you with community needs such as going shopping and exploring social and recreational activities.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare. The South Shore Child Guidance Center’s Clinic Program provides a range of outpatient services that includes assessment, psychiatric evaluation, treatment, and support, while promoting social and educational development.

aftercare iconAftercare

Clients in rehab aftercare programs receive a customized portfolio of services designed to promote their sustained sobriety. These clients have completed high-level treatment, are typically exiting detox and/or intensive inpatient care and are reintegrating into their home, workplace, and community. Rehab aftercare services address addiction disease as a chronic condition requiring continuing care. Clients typically work with case managers and recovery teams to access necessary resources, such as peer coaching and 12 step program induction support.

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

The ultimate goal of a sober living home in New York is to provide structure and support for those who want to maintain sobriety. Often, sober living homes are a transitional space for those moving from residential treatment to mainstream life. Residents typically stay at least 90 days, with most living in the halfway house for more than six months.

heart-hands iconIntervention Services

A drug intervention in New York occurs when family members and friends lovingly confront someone with a substance use disorder. The goal of this confrontation is to motivate the person to seek treatment. Loved ones point out how the person's destructive behavior is affecting them in hopes that they will agree to get help. Most inpatient rehab facilities offer intervention services that can help families walk through this process step by step.

medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox

Medical detox involves weaning your body off of addictive substances in a medically supervised environment. If you've become dependent on alcohol and/or drugs, quitting on your own can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. In medically assisted detox, a team of licensed medical professionals will help manage potential withdrawal symptoms, ensuring that you're as safe and comfortable as possible. This process typically takes about 5-7 days, although the length will depend on your individual needs.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

When you choose drug rehab in New York, you'll participate in a variety of treatments that are designed to help you live a drug-free lifestyle. Common methods of treatment include group, individual, and family counseling, medication management, nutrition, exercise, and management of co-occurring mental health disorders.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

desert iconMotivational Interviewing

Introduced in 1983, motivational interviewing is a method to help clients commit to change. It's based on the philosophy that change is hard, and clients must explore their own options and come to their own conclusions rather than receive warnings or advice from the therapist.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition Therapy

As you recover from addiction, eating the right foods will help you heal and build your health for long term sobriety. Nutrition therapy teaches you about the nutrition your body needs and how to eat the right foods to support your recovery.

recreational-therapy iconRecreational Therapy

In addiction treatment, recreational therapy focuses on engaging you in healthy activities to help reduce your cravings and improve your mental well being. You might engage in activities like cooking classes, hiking, group sports, or swimming as a constructive outlet for stress and emotions that help your recovery.

My son started here when he was diagnosed with mild ADHD when he was 6.5 yrs old and we've had nothing but a great experience with this center. My son currently see's Taylor and she's wonderful! We will continue for as long as my son needs the extra support.

This place is absolutely horrible. Not only does this place do the OPPOSITE of what they are meant to do, but they make your problems even worse so I advise you, go somewhere better and not in some sketchy neighborhood with horrible therapists.

Bianca Nuez has been my son's therapist for a couple of months now and I just came to the conclusion that this person has been doing more damage than good to my son's health. I visited the place for the second time a couple weeks ago and I left the place in panic. She used the time she was supposed to spend treating my child in personal accusations following the child's mother advice. Since there's a friendship between these two who are also coworkers, Ms. Nuez proceeded to tell me to leave my house, while ignoring the fact that I was a victim of domestic violence from her coworker/friend. This indicates a lack of ability to perform her job properly. It lacks ethics and professionalism. Ms Bianca ignored the fact that she was using time that was paid by my child insurance to personally attack me.Stay away from this unprofessional, unpleasant, and nasty place.

Avoid this Clinic in Freeport like COVID -19. The Clinical Director of the children counseling center is a liar. They close out my daughters case in March of this year which was a lie. The Clinical Director of the children's program indicated that she had sent out a letter to my home indicating this......which was also a lie. I spoke with my daughters NP Kathy in May of this year so if her case was closed Kathy would not have given my daughter a call for a session. I informed Kathy that Sheryl the counseling for my daughter has not called her in a while and wanted to know if she had reached out to her. To my understanding you can not just see a NP or a psychiatrist if you do not have therapy in place. So this is another reason why the "Clinical Director" not assistant director Anna was LYING. Kathy informed me that Sheryl has not reached out to her regarding my child's progress in therapy nor has she stated that they case was closed. When I tried to get my child enrolled back into the program the Clinical Director was Very Rude and Nasty. Instead of assisting in this process she continue to state that the "SO Call Dates that her therapies had given me a Call" All Lies. I look in my cell phone and I never received a call from Sheryl- on the dates she indicated and her therapies was writing P-Notes for the false telephone calls. Then the Clinical Director gets upset and states to me are your calling me a Liar......Yes I am because this is what you ARE. SO nothing was accomplished during this call and the only reason why she reached out to me was to argue with a parent on the telephone. VERY Unprofessional...... I tried to call back to speak with the person over top of the Clinical Director of the children unit at South Shore but they keep given me the run around. If this is how this agency is RAN no one should attend their program. I will be given DOH a call to report them!!!

Don't trust the therapists or "nurses". Not even 5 minutes into my evaluation where they suggesting medication when we barley started the questioner. I have nothing against medication but to suggest medication to a client without prior medical history knowledge and current health or medication is dangerous and unprofessional.I have been to other clinics and have never been made this uncomfortable or had such a strong promotion of medication without even a diagnosis or complete evaluation. Tell me why the "nurse" kept pressuring the idea of meds even when I explicitly said how I'd rather wait to talk with my therapist as I had not even one session yet. Her response was to keep pressuring even "low" doses of said medication. Once again we were not even halfway done with our "evaluation".The "evaluation" itself was generic and consisted of basic questions that one would find online. It was nothing like my previous more in depth evaluations from other clinics. Then on top of that the therapist (Figueira) without even trying to ask about my previous history of therapy, assumed and made a serious accusation of a previous diagnosis, that I never received in the past. She stated that it was the reason I had receive therapy in the past and was why I came back to this new clinic. She did not even ask why I was in therapy in previously. Did not try to get to know me or my situation. She as well, continued to pressure the use of meds on me even when I expressed discomfort, as again we have not even had our first full session.I find it strange and highly dangerous that this clinic has a strong obsession with medication, and with it just being offered out like candy.I had a friend who went here an warned me about a therapist who did not listen to her, but instead the therapist would talk about their own problems, remaining unprofessional. I knew this but still decided to give this place a try. I will not be returning. The only genuine person here was the nice guy who took my intake. I had a longer an more genuine listening experience with the intake person than I did with the nurse and therapist.I've never felt such unprofessionalism from a clinic until now.
