About Signature Health – Willoughby

Signature Health is a healthcare network and one of their clinic locations is in Willoughby, Ohio. At this outpatient treatment center they offer drug and alcohol addiction treatment. They have other community health services here too like mental health care and medical care as well as free walk in screenings for HIV and STIs and Hepatitis C.

The addiction treatment here is outpatient but at different levels of intensity. They have an intensive outpatient program or if you need more support they have a partial hospitalization program too. In that case, you’ll still live at home but you’ll come to the treatment center on weekdays for a day of treatment.

The treatment here uses a combination of counseling or therapy and medications for addiction. The medications help to ease the physical addiction symptoms while you address the mental aspect of addiction through therapy and counseling. Most of the program is group counseling so you’ll work through the complex issues in addiction recovery while also getting the strength and support of others in your situation.

This outpatient clinic helps both kids and adults which is helpful because addiction can affect people at any age. For teens with addiction and for kids who are affected by addiction in their family the counselors here offer individualized guidance and treatment.

Clients do have some concerns about the operations here though. They note billing issues and communication issues as well as problems getting prescriptions. Several clients do say though that they’ve been happy with their therapists and that they’re an excellent resource for people with addiction.

Allowed me to detox cold turkey off several dependence forming medications. This sent me to the hospital twice due to a stress induced seizure. I nearly died. This place doesn't care about people. All they will do is cut off your meds that work for you, and then try to start you on antidepressants and buspar. I was so disappointed by Adele Waterstein's (My formed psychiatrist there) conduct that I know I could pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit, and am considering it. My life has been destroyed and I'm now nearly mentally disabled. I can't even get work or basic tasks done. I'm losing everything, and I feel horrible. Absolutely awful. They are aware of all this and never intended to offer a solution. Avoid this death-trap of a behavioral health clinic.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient programs are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. Signature Health’s outpatient programs include a wide range of mental health and chemical dependency services, including diagnostic assessments, psychiatry, opiate detox (Suboxone treatment), case management and counseling.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs are designed to ensure clients receive continuing care while in the maintenance phase of recovery. Some clients may be in outpatient treatment, which is generally considered to be an element of drug rehab aftercare. The specific services provided in these programs are often determined by the client's case manager and care team in consultation with the client. Common services include peer coaching, career counseling, and 12 step program induction.
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) is a short-term form of intensive rehab, usually for those with acute symptoms that are hard to manage but don’t require 24-hour care. PHPs have structured programming (i.e. individual and/or group therapy), and usually meet 3-5 days a week for around 6 hours (i.e. 9am-3m). Some PHPs are residential (patients sleep on site) and some are not, so patients sleep at home. PHPs can last from 1-6 months, and some offer transportation and meals.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one’s body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Ohio provides comprehensive treatment to address the physical and psychological needs of those struggling with substance use disorders. This may involve inpatient and/or outpatient care.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). Therapy groups meet on an outpatient basis and currently include DBT, Art Therapy, Creative Healing for Women, Adult Survivors of Child Abuse (Women Only), Wellness and Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), Social Skills, and CD Persuasion Group.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Signature Health’s team of social workers and counselors address issues including anxiety, depression, ADD or ADHD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance abuse, and dual diagnosis.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist's finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

I don t understand all the negative reviews. I have been going to Willoughby for 5 years, weekly. Yes, there are some providers that I am not a fan of. BUT, they have always helped me find someone who was a better fit. The receptionists are great, the pharmacy is great, and they also take feedback about their groups seriously. There s always going to be a few bad apples. But I credit signature and the providers I ve worked with for saving my life. I really needed the help, and they helped me navigate that.

I've been in therapy for many years and I've never experienced the horrors that I have at Willoughby Signature Health. Sara Thomas covers about every warning sign in a therapist you can think of. The moment I instinctively thought "Threats don't belong in therapy" during session should have been the moment I left. You are not less than any doctor or practitioner of any kind. Sara was often defensive and cruel when talking about myself or about others. Much akin to the saying- pay attention to who gossips because they'll be gossiping about you next in no time flat. When I calmly asked not to personally put me down in a certain manner she quickly cut me off and refused to let me speak. A Therapist often did not let me speak. Let that sink in, I had to. No matter how reasonable or meek or kind I was- it made absolutely no difference. She attempted to diagnose without ever meeting me (the patient). Unbeknownst to her, I have had a legitimate and healthy conversation with a previous therapist on the matter in the past. One that was actually full of reassurance as well as presenting me with examples of myself that couldn't possibly fit the proposed diagnosis. Facts should be the only thing used in diagnosis and this past therapist used just that. This previous therapist learned about me and my history over years of treatment and exercised that knowledge in and around any talk of diagnosis. That is the proper way of handling something serious. Had I not gained the self insight and self preservation that I did with previous therapy it's very possible I wouldn't be here writing this. Taking medication you don't need while treating something you don't have can be deadly. Thankfully for me, I was blessed with kind insightful therapists prior to seeing Sara. The last person I saw doesn't work for Signature anymore sadly but I'm starting to understand why lol. I truly worry for those seeking help after me who are assigned to Sara Thomas. If it feels off, it probably is. It's ok to cut ties for your own personal boundaries and safety. Even if it does hurt to do so. Even if they do flail and insult as result. You And your Boundaries Are important and Do deserve respect (Lesson from my previous therapist that literally saved me here ). A "professional" raging over small things (Anything) is a no go. And with patients? Absolutely not. Good ones are out there. No doubt about it. Just maybe not here :( It's too bad they seem to be buying everyone out in the area. It makes for less options for those seeking help and that's no good for anyone IMO.

felt invisible and unheard from the doctors and counselors here after a couple months of treatment . Not even reception is friendly. I stopped going altogether even though I came on my free will. Every single person there made me feel worse. These kinds of steps to improve your life should feel relieving, not criminal. I also tried to work with dr Phil in weight management and he was ready to be in and out each time, no room for actual questions from me, just prescribe some pills that don t work. Every area of need here I was put to the side and made to feel small. I don t even remember the MAP lady but she was very, very large and didn t want to help me in other areas bc the drugs might cause weight loss.

I made the mistake of choosing this place for mental health. Their more directed towards the treatment of drug addicts. They'll black list you and not contact you any further despite reaching out repeatedly for a councilor n doctor. Now they reach out once their bottom line is a steak. Avoid this place.

I made the mistake of giving their doctors a try. They're actually nurse practitioners and very unprofessional. None of my issues where taken seriously. I literally had to beg for help and was only scrutinized. After scheduling a second time I pleaded for some kind of prescription to ease my pain and suffering. It was prescribed once and only once. Then I made the mistake of giving the pharmacy a try. I don't even know how they managed to mess up so much in one single month. Truly. I was pressed into delivery and tried it. First delivery of my daily prescription was lost immediately and it had to be prescribed an emergency fill back at my CVS pharmacy. Ok can't trust that. Came downstairs after my nurse practitioner appointment to fill what I begged for and they had already sent it out for delivery. Why? Who even gave that go ahead?? I certainly didn't. So instead of taking the dose that evening like discussed I had to wait a week for it to eventually arrive. When I contacted outside of appointment to ask for help continuing prescribing the medication, well, I think you can guess it. Nothing. Seriously it's the same problems for so many. Do these people just lack empathy and sense entirely or what is actually going on??
