About Sequoia Mental Health Services

Sequoia Mental Health Services is a treatment center for behavioral health in Aloha, Oregon, in the Beaverton area. They have residential treatment programs here and they have outpatient (OP) services for drug and alcohol addiction as well as mental health care. They have specialized programs for co-occurring addiction and mental illness too so they are particularly qualified to help people with a dual diagnosis.

They have treatment here for adults and services for adolescents. Regardless of age, your treatment plan will be built around you specifically and what you need at this point in your recovery.

Your treatment plan will involve individual therapy and group therapy. They have family counseling as well. Beyond this they also provide life skills training and case management. They put a focus on community integration too because the goal is to give you the tools and the foundation to live independently in sobriety within the community. As needed they can connect you with other community resources that can help your recovery and help you establish a healthy independent life.

This treatment center also has therapy and mental health care for kids. Addiction affects the whole family, so therapy at this facility can help your kids and your family heal from the effects of addiction and come together to help your recovery.

Some current and past clients here say that the treatment center was a great help to them and worked with them to change their lives. Others, on the other hand, say that they didn’t get the help here that they needed and they say there was a lack of follow through. Everyone’s experience may be different based on the therapist or counselor you work with and where you are in your recovery journey.

First thing...I was a past client of SMHS. I had a negative experience with them as many people do. I reacted in the same way as most do.I blamed my therapists... I was unable to deal with my own issues and was unable to take responsibility for it.Truth be told they went above and beyond.Give these guys a chance. They will do right by you.

Our provider Lisa Knoop introduced herself to me as my partner's therapist via text to my personal device. I thought that that was a breach of confidentiality, but using an unapproved video chat platform (refusing to use the secure app the company provided) while her husband was in the room listening during sessions was a whole other level of screwed up. When I complained, Sequoia did nothing and refused to give me the information I need to escalate my complaint to the state.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Oregon offers a full continuum of care for those struggling with addiction. From detox, to inpatient, to outpatient, to aftercare, Oregon residents can find the support they need for recovery. This treatment empowers individuals to replace drug use with positive alternatives and develop a healthier lifestyle.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Rational Behavior Therapy (RBT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy meant to be short-term and comprehensive. It was intended to help clients become more self-sufficent and move forward without the need for expensive, ongoing therapy. It includes an emotional self-help method called “rational self-counseling,” the purpose of which is to give clients all the skills needed to handle future emotional issues by themselves, or with significantly less professional help.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Accreditations

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Established in 1992 by congress, SAMHSA's mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on American's communities.

This is a scam between the probation/parole department/court and middleman company used to Bill insurance companies like Medicare/Medicaid. These people claim to assist with housing only to leave people in situations which are dangerous to their lives. These people are responsible directly for several deaths and are under investigation currently by the FBI.

If I could give a zero star, I would.Let s start with how absolutely horrible this place is. I am in utter shock that it s even still in business I m writing a review for a friend that doesn t know how to speak up for herself and to save you the trouble from coming to this place. My friend has been attending DUI Classes for over a year now and changed councilors TWICE because apparently nobody there knows how to do their job. They suck at keeping tabs on peoples classes and requirements. She has been needing to retake classes time after time after time since they weren t on file or they didn t write them down . ???? It s been a year????? When it should ve been about 6 months???? She needed to have negative UAs for 90 days and she is at 180 days sober but is still taking UA s for who knows WHAT REASON? SHE HAS DONE DOUBLE THE WORK AND STILL THIS NIGHTMARE ISNT DONE.Everyone at this facility needs to DO BETTER. Stop sweeping everything under the rug and doing these people wrong!! This place needs to be SHUT DOWN.

They lie and they have huge turn over + when they change your workers they don't tell you who your new worker is they expect you too wait too hear from them even if you ask whom your new worker is they ignore you. They make promises and don't come through even when it's your case plan. .. I been with them for 8ish years and my plan has always been: get SSI, find a new place to live so my abuser ( whom they never helped me get away from, even though they are mandated reporters ) cant find me when he gets out of prison ( he got 10 years & it's already been 7 years) & I'm in the same place he got arrested at. My outreach worker request for my medical insurance to pay for my birth certificate it was approved so when I asked my worker when can we go order it. She said she did but vital statistics says she never ordered it. So when I asked her about it she blew me off for 3 weeks then she said she was no longer my worker I have a new one that will hopefully get in touch with me in the future. That was a month ago and no one has reached out to me . I sent her 2 emails and her coworker an email asking + someone who I have a signed ROI on file with sequoia for them to talk to tried calling 2 too see who my worker is and they blew here off too . Im also trying to get a PCA since I need additional help with stuff and for 7 months she said she's trying to get me one then out of the blue she said no I can't until I have medical papers ( but she had gone to Virginia Garcia with me 3 months before that and she even changed my medical too Kaiser Permanente & we had her phone # as my contact for there social outreach person too get ahold of me too help me get a PCA, but she never gave me my messages. Infact she told me the day before I went too the doctorThat she hadn't heard from them yet my Dr the very next day read my notes in the file that there outreach person did try to call my sequoia either twice and left a voicemail even. Plus so much more stuff they don't follow through on .. So highly don't recommend sequoia too people unless they just need to fill some requirement for something minor and need to say they have someone in the mental health field they work with so they can just say they have someone BUT IF YOU REALLY WANT HELP GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!

I attended weekly therapy at Sequoia about 3 years ago. My therapist, Mary, absolutely got me thru one of the roughest patches in my life. I am forever grateful for her professionalism and kind encouragement. I didn't really believe in therapy before I came to Sequoia, but now I'm a believer. I'll always be appreciate that they gave me the strength to create a quiet and safe life.
