The worst, the worst. On the second night, the mean nurse forced me to take the medicine because it wasn't suitable for me, so when I told her I wasn't going to take it, she got angry and abused me, and when I told her that the room was filthy and smelly and I wanted to talk to the person in charge, the man... The nurse sent me a nurse and asked me, ``What are you going to talk to the person in charge?'' Cora, hurry up and leave!'', so I thought that the person in charge wasn't going to call me, so I walked to the nurse's station and told her I was in charge. When I told her to call someone, an elderly, unclean-looking male nurse came to the room and at first apologized and knocked me down, but this guy was also a guru, and when I told her that I was feeling sick and couldn't sleep, she said something strange. 2 doses were to be injected into the IV, so I asked her something, but she ignored me, and I asked her why the injection site was lukewarm, but she ignored me and left. I couldn't sleep because of fear, and when I said I wanted to go back the next day, he offered me that mysterious drug again, so I asked him to write what it was called on the tablet, but he told me it was dilaudid, so I got scared and refused, but he kept repeating it over and over again. I was afraid that I was going to be forced to have sex with her after I suggested it. Since then, nurses and janitors have harassed me in various ways. In the end, the room was cleaned only to the bare minimum and left, leaving the room smelly and the completely broken clock left in a mysterious place. Just when I thought I could finally take a shower, I experienced a hell of skin peeling, where a hot shower was applied to a place where I had no skin due to burns. When I told him that the shower was hot, he said, "You're interfering with my work!" and banged the shower on the tub, making a loud noise, and turned the shower temperature up even more. When I told her that it was getting hot, she grinned, so I said again, ``It's hot!!'' and she lowered the temperature just a little bit and peeled off my skin in severe pain. I was so frustrated that I screamed after it was over. I was almost kicked out of the hospital, but when I came home I realized that I was in no condition to come home. This place has the best burn unit in the US, but while the burn unit is good, the care at St Francis is zero star. It was a terrible experience that I wouldn't want to go back to if I had other options.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
When an individual is in denial about their substance use disorder, their loved ones may organize a drug intervention in California. This effort involves gently but assertively confronting the individual about their substance use and sharing how it has affected those who care about them. A professional interventionist may also attend this gathering. Their expertise with intervention services can prove helpful in guiding the conversation to a positive result.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
hiv-aids-program thumbnail image
HIV/AIDS Program
HIV/AIDS programs support disease prevention and management in high-risk individuals in recovery. Individuals who engage in intravenous drug use and other addictive behaviors are at a higher risk of becoming infected with HIV. Rehab centers that specialize in treating this population typically have a high number of nurses, physicians, and psychiatrists on staff who can make sure both their medical and mental health needs are met.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.
military-program thumbnail image
Military Program
Serving in the military is both mentally and physically challenging, and can result in trauma that persists even after combat ends. Military programs are tailored to the specific and often complex needs of active duty personnel, veterans, and military families. Clients often access these programs through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating, and dysfunctional eating patterns. Many psychologists and other mental health professionals consider eating disorders to be food addictions, meaning food is being used in an addictive way (similar to drug or alcohol addiction). Certain substance abuse treatment programs will have treatment for eating disorders as one of the services offered. An eating disorder may also present as a co-occuring disorder or dual diagnosis alongside drug and alcohol addiction.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Yesterday my spouse and I went to get some labs at around 4pm. To our surprise, lab closes at 4pm. However, we went to admitting office to set up an appointment for the following day at 8am. In the middle of the process, the person doing the admitting ( I believe his name is James??) called the lab and to our surprise, this nice lady named Tasha accommodated after hours labs due my spouse. Both employees have a Great spirits, they were very empathetic, caring, & very professional! I want to thanks both employees for their dedication, thoroughness, and kindness to get us in after hours. This and all Hospitals in this racist city, do not go to any of these Hospitals especially if you are in Pain, purchase fentanyl or heroin before you go to these Hospitals because they discriminate and refuse to give you any pain medicines, I thought Doctors made a pledge to help especially when you are in extreme PAIN!!!!! I GIVE SAN FRANCISCO HOSPITIALS ZERO STARS, Why DO YOU THINK SO MANY PEOPLE ARE DYING FROM HAVING TO BE FORCED TO SELF MEDICATE, these so called Doctors took a oath to relieve patients pain while in the hospital, unacceptable and these doctors and hospitals need to be punished harshly, I overheard doctors laughing at people in serious need to relieve pain.

My second time at this facilities ER & the staff are amazing! Great spirits, great bed side manner, empathetic, caring, & very professional! A special thanks to Amber in triage for her dedication, thoroughness, and kindness to get me in promptly and make me laugh, the PA Angela Kinderman, Nurses Justin and Dylan were all just so top notch explaining everything to ensure I understood my issues, treatment, and recommendations for follow up and care, they were very kind and their disposition and patience helped ease my stress in such a scary and painful situation for me. They deal with a lot and to still show quality care and empathy is what makes my heart smile! I appreciate you all at St Francis Emergency Room; thank you!!

0 STARS! They made my friend walk home on a broken foot without crutches or any treatment. After hours of waiting, they told my friend his toe was broken (we already knew that). They said they wouldn't accept his insurance and just handed him a printout of other clinics he could walk to and send him on his way.St Francis was known for helping the poor. Take that name of your terrible hospital if you're literally going to tell someone to pay up or walk home on a broken toe!

The medical staff in the emergency department are very good, but they paid about 2,000 US dollars in fees. Almost a year later, a Swiss debt collection company is asking for about 8,000 US dollars in medical expenses. Is this true?

I was worried for my health, so I went ahead and had the er bring me this hospital. Nurse or the staff that were helping me, were judgmental and even joke about the issue I had. As I appreciate the work these workers do. I shouldn t be treated like I was a nuisance as I was concerned for my physical health and wellbeing.
