About Sabino Recovery

Sabino Recovery is a mental health and addiction treatment facility in Tucson, Arizona. It’s located on a 140 acre property that provides clients with calming desert and mountain views. Clients can expect to get a personalized treatment plan for recovery after a thorough assessment is completed. The treatment plan begins after a client has successfully completed the detox program. The organization believes in the importance of individual therapy, which is why every client will participate in 50 one on one sessions in 35 days. Patients will also be participating in a small group therapy that doesn’t have more than eight individuals, as well as family therapy sessions.

One service that stands out to me is the number of drug addictions they offer treatment for. Clients can receive treatment for Percocet addiction, fentanyl addiction, benzodiazepine abuse and many other substances. An additional thing I like about this facility is the various therapeutic approaches they use. Beyond common therapeutic approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy, staff members also employ expressive art therapy and meditation to help clients with recovery.

This facility also offers many integrative therapies that clients can choose to take advantage of. These integrative therapies include hypnosis, tai chi and many other unique therapeutic activities.

Sabino Recovery has a continuing care program that begins when a client is first admitted. Staff members start developing an aftercare plan that may include intensive outpatient programs and sober living arrangements. Clients can also be a part of lifelong alumni programs, which offer individualized follow ups and weekly group Zoom calls for continual support in maintaining sobriety.

Sabino is unlike any other treatment center I ve ever been to and for anyone reading these and wondering whether they should choose this place, the answer is yes, pack your bags. It s ALWAYS scary to take that step, but this is one you will not regret. I have been to several in the past 2 years and none of them came even close to the overall, deep healing that Sabino offers. It s different in a good way. First off, the true healing always begins once you leave, but you get the tools, the friendships, the stability and the awareness at Sabino. Instead of just focusing on the issue at hand, they dive deeper and focus on where the issue came from. They dig deeper, love deeply, and give you tools you never thought you had inside you or needed, but actually did. The staff is amazing, it s beautiful, clean, great food and a great atmosphere to heal in. Trust me when I say you are well on your way when you choose this place.

Though I started to write a review for months, I think now is actually perfect. I reluctantly accepted I needed residential help spring of this year after my local therapist forced the issue. I was turning 62 and thought, why bother, it s too late, what s really going to change. I had experienced a lot of childhood trauma that had helped form my unhealthy coping skills. Then in 2013 I found my 15 year old son who had completed suicide. I had survived, but I certainly wasn t thriving. I started drinking more. I had gotten to a point that I no longer just drank to not feel but to also feel anything. My marriage was a mess and I realized I couldn t be the mom or MiMi I wanted to be . Seven months later, I m sober and continuing to heal and grow. The group of friends I made while there are still a big part of my life. I have a group of women I talk with every week, who understand where I was and where I m going. They have been a large part of my continued healing and it doesn t cost a thing. No program is perfect, I know. Yet Sabino was perfect for me! From Shara, the director, down, the staff is wonderful. All the therapists I had the opportunity to work with were great. I felt as though Tana, my primary therapist and small group leader, was put there just for me. Trish, my trauma therapist helped me get in touch and process the deep grief I had buried, in order to survive. After doing this I was able to let go of so much pain as I shared with Tana and my small group. This is the first Christmas since my son died I was able to bring out old decorations. Were there still some tears and pain, sure, but not suffering and many of the tears were happy ones.A good, in person family program, was huge for me and one of the things that influenced my choice of Sabino. It did not disappoint. My choosing to heal has encouraged my entire family to choose healing. I have a son at Sabino now, another wanting to go after the first of the year. This is just incredible to me.I must also say, life has hit our family hard since I have been home, yet it hasn t stopped my healing journey. A year ago the situations we have dealt with these last few months would have destroyed me.Yes, it is a lot of money, yes, it is scary and the work is painful. It is also, so worth whatever it takes.I can say without a doubt going to Sabino for 60 days was the best investment I have ever made in myself and our entire family!

What an incredible place!!! I was living with trauma for 50 years which got to the point of my anxiety and depression taking over my life. It was the most difficult decision of my life but the most important. I left in in July 2014 after 35 days and my life is so different now, all for the better. The staff is so caring and loving from the Therapists to the BHT's (Behavioral Health Technicians), the Nursing staff, etc. On my first full day it seemed like everyone on the staff knew my name and welcomed me with open arms. Individual Therapy, Process Groups, Group Therapy and a plethora of other sessions keep you busy but there is still free time to relax and socialize or do whatever you want. And the Saturday trips for coffee at Le Buzz and Sunday field trips allow you to clear your mind and be in the public so you're prepared for the next step.Sabino works on so many different levels, not just the mind but also the body and heart with integrative therapies such as massage, yoga, qi gong, brain mapping, equine therapy to name a few. And you will never go hungry because (although I will never really admit it to the staff) the food was incredible. Sunday brunch was terrific.Sabino is on a big property but there are less than 35 Residents at a time. But there is also basketball, pickle ball, tennis and a huge swimming pool. The wildlife is so beautiful from jack rabbits, coyotes, javelinas, etc. and the sunrises and sunsets are so beautiful and calming. The Residents (or as I called everyone...my family) are just wonderful. There was not one person who didn't care about another and I was able to have so many open conversations with everyone. They were so accepting and non-judgmental. I learned so much from everyone and I miss all of them. And when it was time for me to leave, my continuing care was all planned and laid out for me so I knew I was going to succeed. Plus, there are Alumni Zooms every Tuesday (just Alumni) and Thursday (with Alumni director/Therapist) so there are times that I feel like I have never left. For the first time in my life I can honestly saw that I like myself, but more important, that I am my best friend. And I could never have done this without Sabino. If you every have a doubt about Sabino, get it out of your head. It will be the best decision you will ever make!!!WE GOT YOU!!!

Sabino Recovery works with several private insurance providers and also accepts private payments when possible, please contact to verify your specific insurance provider.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Many clients who enroll in an outpatient rehab program are exiting intensive inpatient care and no longer require such high-level clinical supervision. Outpatient programs typically follow a step-down structure, with treatment frequency and intensity decreasing as clients progress in their recovery journey. Partial hospitalization (PHP) and intensive outpatient (IOP) levels of care are the most time-intensive and are designed primarily for clients who have just left inpatient treatment or who are at an elevated risk of relapse.
inpatient iconInpatient
Inpatient rehab is designed primarily for persons in early recovery and those who are exiting detox programs. It's ideal for clients in crisis or at an elevated risk of relapse. Inpatient treatment centers provide housing and meals, allowing clients to focus on their recovery away from distractions and addiction triggers. Clients engage in intensive psychotherapy, and many inpatient programs feature recovery-focused life skills training and/or complementary therapies like meditation, creative arts therapy, and other holistic treatments.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Rehab aftercare programs support clients' successful reintegration into their home, workplace, and community. Drug rehab aftercare presumes that recovery requires life-long support. These programs typically offer a wide variety of services customized for the clients' unique and evolving needs. Clients may receive vocational training and career counseling, housing assistance, legal aid, peer coaching, and 12 step program induction, among other services. Clients' case managers often play a lead role in rehab aftercare planning.
sober-living iconSober Living Homes
Sober Living Houses (SLHs), aka sober homes or halfway houses, are safe, substance-free, supportive living facilities for those recovering from substance abuse. Ideal for those who've just been through inpatient or outpatient treatment, SLHs are supervised environments with rules that support sobriety, such as curfews, shared chores, and therapeutic meetings. Residents are also often trained on life skills and coping skills to make it easier to transition into society. SLHs also provide a strong sense of community that can lead to the kind of deep and lasting connections with other sober individuals that supports a new, healthy lifestyle.
heart-hands iconIntervention Services
Intervention services helps family or friends of addicts stage an intervention, which is a meeting in which loved ones share their concerns and attempt to get an addict into treatment. Professional intervention specialists can help loved ones organize, gather, and communicate with an addict. They can guide intervention participants in describing the damage the addict's behavior is causing and that outside help is necessary to address the addiction. The ideal outcome of an intervention is for the addict to go to rehab and get the help they need.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
The initial phase of recovery treatment typically includes 24-hour clinical care in Arizona. This constant supervision ensures a safe detox process, which helps the individual physically stabilize from substance use. Patients will receive medications to curb withdrawal symptoms and cravings, as well as other necessary medical treatment. This period typically lasts up to a week, then the individual will receive medical clearance to begin inpatient or outpatient rehab.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

Drug rehab in Arizona is the process of treating individuals who are dependent on a particular addictive drug. Because addiction is complex, this treatment typically includes a variety of interventions that address the many physical and emotional issues involved.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Equine therapy, aka equine-assisted therapy (EAT), is a form of experiential therapy that involves interactions and activities with horses. It does not necessarily involve riding horses, but all activities related to horses, such as feeding, grooming, haltering and leading them. A mental health professional frequently oversees the activities (often in conjunction with a horse professional), and helps patients process their thoughts, feelings, and behavior patterns during and/or after the interaction. Equine assisted therapy is particularly powerful and effective in the treatment of addictions and trauma, as both are marked by detachment from others and a lack of trust in one’s self and one’s environment. Working to build connection with a horse can not only assist residents in re-grounding themselves, but can also offer the hope of forging new and trusting relationships in the world beyond treatment.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

EMDR is a therapeutic modality originally developed to help process trauma. In an EMDR session, a patient is prompted to undergo eye movements that mimic those of REM sleep. This is accomplished by watching a therapist’s finger move back and forth across, or following a bar of light. The goal is repetitive sets of eye movements that help the brain reprocess memory, which can significantly reduce the intensity of remembered traumatic incidents. Associated memories can heal simultaneously, leaving patients significantly calmer, more stable, and more emotionally relaxed. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that result from disturbing life experiences. It is one of the most widely researched and validated methods used today in the treatment of trauma. EMDR is based on the premise that a disturbing experience becomes locked in the brain and stored with the same perceptions that existed at the time of the event.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Nutrition therapy helps reduce the discomfort of detox and reduces cravings during drug rehab in Arizona. It helps you navigate nutrition, teaching you how to plan and prepare meals that meet your nutritional needs.

Creativity is inherently healing, and can help those in recovery express thoughts or feelings they might not otherwise be able to. Creative arts therapy can include music, poetry/writing, painting, sculpting, dance, theater, sandplay, and more. Unlike traditional art, the final product matters far less than the experience of creation and expression itself.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

I ve been to Sabino Recovery (SR) twice now. My first time Jan-Feb was a like altering experience focused on the childhood trauma I had never acknowledged or was aware of. Knowing all of that helped me understand some of my activities such as collecting large amounts of stuff , whether things or when food shopping. I returned to SR to further understand and change behaviors as a second act. The therapists are top notch, and both times my trauma therapist, Pat Thurman, was fantastic and was really the cherry on top of the sundae. The maximum capacity of residents is nice and small, 30, meaning you get to know all of the staff and fellow residents, and they us, which makes for a very comfortable time spent there. Nick and Chef Rob kept us well fed with delicious meals 3 times a day. Yes, I gained a few pounds with each stay. The Sunday brunch is fantastic and an always looked forward to. Hard to say no to the offered meals! The campus is small but on 140 acres; it s beautiful and benefits from the Tucson weather. What really made the experience was the residents. I gained insight and perspective from learning about their struggles and could see the improvements in most of them before they leave. Many friendships develop in the 35 (minimum) day there.Overall, I can HIGHLY recommend SR. ALL of the residents appreciated having the opportunity to be able to attend, including myself.

Sabino offered everything I could've hoped for in order to begin my path of recovery from Complex-PTSD. From individual and group therapies such as Somatic Experiencing, workshops on various subjects including trauma, inner child work, abuse in its different forms, integrative services based on Asian practices equine therapy and brain mapping to name some of what Sabino has to offer. Going there was the very best decision I've made in my lifetime. I have a very good beginning on the path to recovering from my traumas. So grateful!

I went to Sabino Recovery in 2018 and I can't say enough good things. This place helped me work through my trauma and I could not be more grateful. It is hard when you are and in the thick of working through everything but so worth it on the other side!

I was a resident at Sabino in September/October of 2021. Years of trauma and grief (new and old) had finally taken its toll and I was broken. I made the decision to go to Sabino and it was the best decision I ever made. Sabino focuses on your mind, body and soul! It all connects. From the delicious meals, to the integrative therapies, to actual talk therapy, individual and group. From the AMAZING staff and community, to the surrounding beauty of the landscape and mountains. This was my home for 35 days and this is where I finally began to heal. Sabino did for me in 35 days what years of weekly/bi-weekly therapy could not do and I am forever grateful for the MASSIVE foundation they provided that has allowed me to be me again. To anyone needing/wanting to heal, in whatever capacity, you can do it safely and successfully at Sabino.I had to immerse myself completely from the first day, apply myself and be present. I had good days and bad days and it was hard work at times, but every day that passed I felt stronger. The stronger I became, the better I felt and I found myself realizing and then saying, It feels so good to feel good. And once I started feeling good, I wanted to keep feeling good! I left Sabino with valuable tools that I practice and put to use everyday now that I m home. I have value, strength and hope again and I wouldn t trade my time at Sabino for anything. To everyone that played a role in my healing Thank You! Remember, YOU are the greatest project you will ever work on!!!
