About Richmond State Hospital

Richmond State Hospital is a public behavioral health and psychiatric hospital in Richmond, Indiana. It’s run by the state to provide inpatient and residential treatment to people who have drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness or both.

This facility is a 190 bed hospital, but it has different units for different specialties and populations. For addiction, they have a 60 bed unit that specializes in co-occurring addiction and mental illness. They have transitional care homes, too, to help you transition back to independent living after your treatment.

They use evidence based treatment strategies like acceptance and commitment therapy and motivational interviewing. You’ll get individualized treatment that centers on discovering your sober self and resolving or addressing the specific issues that contribute to your addiction. Along the way you’ll be developing life skills that will help you manage life without drugs and alcohol, like stress management and coping skills as well as mindfulness and emotional regulation. Plus they can help you get back on your feet with vocational services to help you secure a job and start building a career.

Clients have great things to say about their experiences here. Many clients credit this facility with saving their lives and allowing them to get back the life they had been wanting for so long. They say that the staff is caring and the facility helps them put their lives back together by even helping them regain custody of their kids and teaching them how to live sober.

Richmond is a very strict recovery program, they won't baby you so if you can't take a stringent recovery program go to a catering facility. I was there in the '80s and finished the program, it did me good, I have fell back a few times but with the tools they gave me I was able to get back on track and have been sober for 18 years. If you choose this program finish it and walk out a better person, remember it's tough but it will build character and you will be stronger for it. Good Luck, Roland

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Took a brief tour of one of the buildings turned into a museum. It was a great experience and very educational. Would've liked to have seen "behind the scenes" but with pandemic going on I completely understand.

This place saved my sanity. And my life. I will never forget the defeat I felt when I found out I was being committed here against my will. I thought I would find the experience uncomfortable and all out dreadful. Only one of these were true. It was uncomfortable. But the experience, and invasive treatment I got saved me. I m not prone to outbursts anymore. I am 2 years sober from heroin. And it s all because of my medication that they found worked through trial and error. They had to do away with home visits because of my roommate s suicide. Rest In Peace. But they will keep you until you get better. If you truly surrender yourself to the treatment and listen. You will get better. I haven t been back to a mental ward since. I was on 421 A. An addictions and mental illness unit. It was like they did everything they could to save me. We went outside often when it got warm. It s not like jail. You have people to interact with, and you have people who will listen. Attend all to 90% of your groups that are assigned to you. It s insentive to get out faster, and get better at the same time. It s a pain. But it s a good system. People care here. They never made me feel otherwise. Thanks to everyone on 421 A. Thanks for the accommodations that were given to me. And I cannot say enough about how kind everybody was. The food was kinda subpar though. But hey, they agreed to a double portions diet for me. That s amazing. Thank you all!!!
