About Regional Health System

Regional Health Systems — Merrillville Behavioral Health in Newburgh, Indiana, provides mental and behavioral health care services for children, teens and adults. They offer emergency support, inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment to help you address a range of challenges, including drug and alcohol addiction.

Their inpatient unit is for people who need an intensive level of care because they’re at risk of hurting themselves or others. If you’re suffering from an acute psychiatric condition, you can start your recovery here in a safe, therapeutic setting. Most people are here for about a week, and your services will include individual counseling, family meetings, and comprehensive discharge planning. They can hold up to 16 people at a time.

When you’re ready to step down to a less intensive level of care, they also offer outpatient counseling and psychiatry services. In addition to these two options, they can also connect you to other locations within Regional Health Systems that offer addiction specific services.

One client says she can tell how much her therapist cares and that she always feels comfortable when she comes here. Another client says the communication is great and her therapist always returns her phone calls quickly.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Regional Mental Health’s outpatient mental health counseling is provided for individuals, couples and families of all ages by their professional staff of psychologists, clinical social workers, mental health counselors and psychiatrists. These programs provide help to adults and children having trouble effectively managing their lives through the various stages of change and development. Leaving home for the first time, getting married or divorced, coping with a loss and handling stress are a few of the life cycle events emphasized in these programs. Striving Together to Achieve Recovery (STAR) is an adolescent program consisting of two days per week for 12 weeks. The young person would receive information about the psychological and physical effects of substance abuse as well as being educated on the 12-step program and other coping skills to stay sober. Parent or guardian participation is encouraged for the STAR group.

aftercare iconAftercare Support

Completing a drug or alcohol rehab program shouldn't spell the end of substance abuse treatment. Aftercare involves making a sustainable plan for recovery, including ongoing support. This can include sober living arrangements like halfway houses, career counseling, and setting a patient up with community programs like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

sober-living iconSober Living Homes

Consists of group homes and community-based apartments. Group homes provide 24 hour supervised residential care, either as a transitional step for individuals being discharged from more restrictive settings, or to avoid a placement in a more restrictive setting. Services offered within the program include room and board, milieu therapy, therapeutic activities, and education in activities of daily living, case management and linkage with other services. Community-based apartments are managed by Regional. There is not 24 hour staff on site, but there is a strong case management component to provide in-home support for successful independent living.

Regional Mental Health Center maintains special services for deaf and hard of hearing clients who may be in need of outpatient mental health or gambling services. Therapists are part of the case conferencing process for children in Special Education.

Heart icon Treatment

alcohol iconAlcoholism

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

drugs iconDrug Addiction

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health and Substance Abuse

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

opium iconOpioid Addiction

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Hand holding medical sign icon Clinical Services

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

medical-detox iconExperiential Therapy

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

life-skills iconLife Skills

Vocational Rehabilitation services provide information and skill building to train and assist severely and persistently mentally ill individuals in obtaining and maintaining community-based employment. Staff helps individuals locate types of employment that best fit both employer and applicant needs and provide job coaching to work with and train the employee on-the-job as well as monitor the employee’s job progress. When an employee is referred by the program, employers can be confident that the new employee is prepared and receives ongoing support to maintain employment.

nicotine iconNicotine Replacement Therapy

Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) is a way of getting nicotine into the bloodstream without smoking. It uses products that supply low doses of nicotine to help people stop smoking. The goal of therapy is to cut down on cravings for nicotine and ease the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.

Nutrition Therapy

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Rapid Resolution Therapyâ„¢ (RRT) is an innovative and holistic approach developed by Dr. Jon Connelly, founder of The Institute for Survivors of Sexual Violence. Unlike other approaches to trauma treatment that require an individual to experience painful emotions while reliving the trauma, RRT clears the negative effects of traumatic events effectively, quickly, and gently. In this uplifting approach to treatment and healing, negative habits and painful emotions are replaced by positive actions, energy, and a feeling of well-being.

I have been coming here for years and honestly love the place. My therapist has helped me grow in ways I didn't think possible. Reviews show a negative outlook on the receptionists, but every experience I have had with them was warm, welcoming, and full of patience and laughter. They handle themselves very well and are incredibly patient with guests. The only negative i can come up with is their current rotating psychiatry department, but thats due to a shortage of people in the profession!

I've been with regional for a long time on and off and it's honestly more hit and miss than I'd like. My last psychiatrist; although highly recommended did not make me feel comfortable. It is very odd to me that someone; who literally has your sanity in their hands, can callously and unabashedly offer you mind altering meds, and nonchalantly seem irritated when you don't just throw caution to the wind and accept without informed consent. It is also really disappointing that again someone can callously ask questions about traumatic and triggering information methodically and unfeeling without asking if you're ready or alright to continue before moving on to their next checklist item. Also why is it that therapists who don't give you meds have more conversations and insight to your life than the individuals signing away benzos and narcs to get you through the day? The system is broken and I wish someone would fix it.

I went here for both therapy and treatment for many years. Being here definitely contributed to the decline of my mental health. The nurses are amazing people and very nice but the receptionists are a completely different story. They come off as very rude and judge mental people. Always very passive aggressive towards anyone who comes in. I never felt welcome here even though I came here FOR YEARS. When it comes to doctors, they seem to not care about your well-being at all. They only care about getting your session over with. I would not come here or take your children here if you are interested in getting better. I was put on many different medications over the years and still never got better. They provided no aid in my recovery. Very disappointed in the treatment I received from professionals.
