If you need appointments scheduled for a time around your work schedule, too bad. They won't change your doctor, and they won't make an effort to schedule them at times that work for you. Need medications on time? Too bad, you'll get them whenever they feel like because they've decided you don't care since you're busy with a sick child, who in turn had surgery, and missed some appointments so they will mismanage your children's medication. It feels very much like being punished, and it's affecting the children's stability. There's no understanding here of reality, just a rigidity in their way of handling things that leaves the patients without care. Every issue is a phone tag disaster. They'd rather you lose your job and dedicate your life to their appointments than work with a parent. If you experience a major life change, they will not acknowledge this, they will put *more* pressure on you and be even less willing to do anything different than what you were doing prior to said life change. The doctor most of us see is very kind, but consistently late to appointments, which has caused us to miss several because they were scheduled in a window of time that was too strict to accommodate lateness. All around, it's been a rough experience here. The good they've done is grandly overtaken by the chaotic management of appointments and medications.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

I don't know how many of these so-called doctors are allowed to treat children. Especially children who need serious mental health treatment, which clearly these doctors are not able to provide. They always do more harm than good.

Don't go here for psych testing especially if you are a woman seeking answers about adhd or autism. I had an initial interview (I waited almost year for this appointment) with Quynh Chau. I thought it was going fine until the end of the interview. She told me there was no indication of autism based on how I interacted with her. I brought up the concern that if I had autism how would she differentiate between if I was masking or just not autistic. She stated that "autistic people are not emotionally or socially intelligent enough to mask" anyone who knows anything about autism know masking is real especially with higher functioning individuals, there are studies published on it. I was appalled, confused, and humiliated. It is incredibly concerning that she is trusted to diagnose autism while believing and spreading that false information. Oh not to mention the super out of date adhd assessment questionnaires from 1998 or something. I canceled my psych testing because I don't trust that she has up to date knowledge to make accurate diagnoses.

As someone that recently had a loved one here - I was APPALLED(for the most part. There were two staff that I absolutely loved and cannot thank enough). Now, before I get to the bad, I would like to say thank you to the two following people -Nurse Josh!! He is a wonderful, wonderful human. He could see me getting upset after visitation and actually took time to sit down with myself, my fiance, and other family present at visitation and listened to my concerns. He never cut me off, got rude, or tried to make excuses. He passed my concerns along to the appropriate parties and esp. when it came to my fianc s joking behavior towards suicide, made sure he also followed up with my fiance to get an accurate representation of what was going on so he could also report that instead of just blowing it off or laughing along with him. There are not enough words to show my appreciation for him. Josh also heard my concerns about family pretty consistently missing 20-30 minutes of visitation time and told me the next time he was on shift he would personally come out to ensure we were all in at the right time. He stuck by his word and on day 3 I finally got a full visitation with my fiance. It s terrifying and stressful enough when you have a loved one in a place like that. Whenever my fiance told me Josh was working I felt 100 times better because I knew he was in good hands at least for that day.Security supervisor Jake - this man stopped me after visitation one night to talk to me about my previous concerns with another security guard. He listened, didn t try to make excuses for anyone, and genuinely just made the process of visitation a lot smoother. One conversation completely helped my anxiety level. Now for the bad -My fiance was admitted here and for the second visitation, one security guard informed us that his shift was already over and left the family out in the hallway for 20 minutes (out of the hour). I spoke with a nurse (the CHARGE NURSE..couldn t see her name because she had her badge flipped) because I already had some concerns with the security guard from a previous visitation. Charge nurse informed me first that she did not have the time to take my concerns (concerns such as the security guard laughing right along with my fiance when talking about suicide, watching my fiance slip his GPS bracelet and choosing to say nothing, interrupting my visitation with my fiance to talk to my fiance about alcohol and drugs..) When I pressed more she informed me that there was nowhere for me to lodge a complaint d/t me not being the patient. When I asked how I could adequately advocate for my fiance if there was nowhere I could lodge a complaint or nowhere for me to go when I had concerns, she responded that I should focus on being a fiance and let my fiance advocate for himself.Thankfully my fiance is now out of there and we can start the healing process. And I will continue to be both an ADVOCATE and a FIANCE.I am writing this review because one, PSS needs to do better. But I am also writing this review because I have been in the mental health field for about 10 years now and need family members to know they CAN absolutely lodge a complaint even if they are not the patient. They CAN advocate for their loved one. Especially when they re in an inpatient treatment facility. The state has a 24/7 complaint line. There are multiple, multiple resources available. A quick Google search will always be able to at the very least point you in the correct direction.Do better, Porter Starke.EDIT 7/19: I tried writing an updated review but it was deleted. So I will post it here because I will not be silenced. I called and left a voicemail on 7/16 after receiving a comment asking me to call and discuss my concerns. After not receiving a call back, I called the phone number again on 7/17. I was informed my concerns were forwarded to the VP of Clinical Services, Sandy Carlson. I was informed that Ms. Carlson was in a meeting and would return my call soon. It is now 11:03AM on 7/19/2024. No return phone call at all.

I am an Iraq War veteran and am being treated with no respect by this company. They had a case worker see me in the ER at Porter in August '21after the VA made a medication change that wasn't good. The VA paid for the hospital visit and would have paid Porter-Starke, but they didn't bill me until last month (June '24). The VA only allows one year to claim an expense, so Porter-Starke insists on me paying them now. Waiting almost three years to bill someone is the definition of incompetence, and their lack of care is gross negligence. The VA would have gladly paid Porter-Starke had they done the right thing and on time. I am now getting the VA Patient Advocate, and Senator Todd Young involved starting tomorrow.

Psychiatrist was too intense. Rushed me to answer questions then dismissed my concerns as foundationless once I couldn't keep up with their questions.I asked for clarification if there was more paperwork before leaving only to have the receptionist call me telling me that I forgot to do paperwork when I was already in my car driving home. I asked for further clarification, and they told me "Goodbye" and hang up on me.

I m sick of them scheduling appointments months apart and then canceling it the day of my appointment, they re so incredibly rude and it s non-stop canceling my appointments. I have to wait a long time for my appointments, to then have them be cancelled maybe an hour or so before I have to be there. It s a waste and they do not care about their clients or anything. I d advise not even bothering with this place, to have my appointments cancelled the day of repeatedly is ridiculous. Worst place I ve ever been!

Horrendous place. I originally took my son here May of 2022 because he spoke of suicide at school and needed to be released. I thought having him in counseling would be good, so I made him an appt. The soonest available they had was AUGUST. And even then, they called me like a week before his appt and said they needed to reschedule because the doctor was going on vacation. The next available they had was October!!! I said no thank you! Unfortunately, I made the mistake of trying again recently, only to show up and be told we don't have an appointment. Get real. To come here and see that this place has 2.3 stars does not surprise me.
