They do their best to help people as soon as possible with mental/behavioral health care, but the woman in charge of calls regarding medications never answers and hasn't responded to my voice mails in 3 days. The front desk couldn't help. I also can never get in for months because they book everyone 3 months in advance for appointments most people probably cancel... Might need a new system for that cause this is wasting everyone's time.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Clients receiving treatment at an inpatient rehab facility are typically in early recovery or are at heightened risk of relapse. Clients in inpatient care remain at the facility for the duration of their program, enabling them to focus solely on their recovery. Inpatient treatment typically involves extensive psychotherapy, often including group and family counseling as well as one-on-one sessions. Recovery-focused life skills education is another common service. Many rehabs also offer evidence-based holistic therapies.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
Individuals in early recovery often require 24-hour clinical care in North Carolina. This supervised care typically includes medications to treat specific withdrawal symptoms, which vary based on the substance abused. For example, staff may provide sleep aids to treat insomnia in patients who are addicted to marijuana. For those overcoming a cocaine use disorder, anti-depressants may be prescribed to manage mood swings. Other medications may also be provided to treat addiction-related health issues.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

There are many types of drug rehab in North Carolina. To receive treatment for addiction, you can choose from many inpatient and outpatient programs. Often, participants start with detox and work through a full continuum of care that continues with ongoing support for long-term recovery.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
lgbtq-program thumbnail image
LGBTQ Program
Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy helps you reclaim your life after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Therapists help to process these memories, which promotes emotional healing and reduces anxiety in social situations. This improves your overall well being and increases your self confidence.

eye-movement iconEye Movement Desensitization And Reprocessing

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Life skills trainings involve all the skills a person must have in order to function successfully in the world. These include time management, career guidance, money management, and effective communication. Truly successful addiction recovery is based on the ability to not only live substance-free, but to thrive. Life skills teaches the practical necessities of functioning in society, which sets clients up for success in life, and therefore sobriety.

Recreational therapy in North Carolina helps you during drug and alcohol addiction recovery by engaging you in activities that support your physical and mental health. Sports, arts, and outdoor adventures give you positive experiences that help replace substance use and help you develop healthy habits and a support network.

Port Health helped me gain a quality of life that I never would have gotten without them. The staff are always so warm and welcoming and don't treat you like a number, they treat you as a human being. From Kathy and Brooke and T up at the front, to all the counselors, man oh man, what a team effort. I was treated like family from the moment I walked in those doors completely bankrupt. I got out of detox and got an appt. set up and have been going ever since. I graduated their SAIOP program, and now do their One hour groups, see a David once a month and see my beautiful therapist Liz once a month and if I need to talk to her sooner, she always makes herself available. With doing group therapy you become apart of the entire counseling staff. Leigh Anne is just adorable and amazing, Danny does amazing at teaching mindfulness Friday's and Amanda is smart as a whip and always likes to get you out of your comfort area. Chels and the counselors who do SAIOP are imperative parts of this recovery process, and I have been asked to come back and speak at these groups about my experience, strength and hope of what this program has done for my life. I will forever be grateful for this place and all the staff and the tools they teach you how to live a successful, mindful, can be proud of yourself and get your life back and better then ever before. I love you all so so much! Thank you for everything you have done to help me and continue to help me. Ohhhh and can't forget my love Angel the nurse that is amazing and so compassionate and she's always a breathe of fresh air.

I have suffered a lot of trauma from childhood I have been with Port Health for a lot of years. I have suffered emotional, mental abuse from my family for a long time. I have regular therapy sessions and also my mental health physician every month. They have helped me tremendously being able to cope with being traumatized by members of my family. I am still around some family members because I needed a place to stay and I am starting over. If there is a problem I always call for help during work and after hours support team. They do have regular meetings here on specific days and I have attended a meeting. I do attend therapy sessions regularly. I have been through alot of through trauma that was not my fault in my family. The most important part I learned through going to Port Health is it was not my fault and I was too young to ever remember and do not hold me accountable for anything that others have done in my families. I am in a better place now and I know every day it will get better. Thank you Port Health!

The staff at Port Health have always been friendly and professional. I have never had an unpleasant experience here. David Taylor has always treated me as an equal, listened to my concerns, and offered solutions as a holistic approach to care. He doesn t just write a prescription and send me out the door. Care should be centered around the patient and what works for them. He has taken time with me, on several occasions, to get to the root of the problem and work on them from top to bottom, inside and out. He lays the options out on the table, offering education to understand my options, and how they can work for me. I truly respect his advice and him as a person and provider. Port Health offers patient centered care that goes above and beyond. Thank you for that.

I have gone to this Port a few times, and I failed. But that was my fault, not anyone else's. I successfully completed the SAIOP program and LOVE my facilitator. They really do care for you here. I didn't want to step down. I still see her as my therapist and she knows me in and out. I recommend them to anyone that needs mental or substance abuse services!
