About Penn Psychiatric Center

Penn Psychiatric Center is an outpatient mental health center in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. They help with a wide range of mental health and behavioral health issues and that includes drug and alcohol addiction. This clinic also has a location in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily a rehab but more of a counseling center because they help with anything you may need for your mental health. Their primary services are individual counseling and group therapy. They have medication management as well if you can benefit from medications.

There’s a focus on your support system here as well. They have family therapy which helps your family heal from the effects of addiction and come together to grow your recovery. There are peer support groups too so you can develop a peer support system and get the help of being around other people who know and understand your struggle.

You might need to expect some scheduling hiccups here though. Clients at this center so often say that they love their therapist and the care they get but that scheduling is difficult and there are often mishaps with appointment schedules.

Last time I left a review about my multiple voicemails and calls NOT being responded to, I got an immediate call back and warned that I got them in trouble with their compliance officer by a very unhappy person. I hope this review helps me get a response in regards to making an appointment and getting one of my medications refilled. I have called several times over the past week, left 4 voicemails, and even wrote a handwritten request to my psychiatrist asking to have my meds refilled. My pharmacist has also called and left a voicemail to no avail. I look forward to someone getting back to me and hope the compliance office is aware that they still remain non compliant. I was also made aware that there is only 1 person to answer the entirety of the call volume for all penn psych locations. I highly recommend they hire more folks or at least have the receptionists answer calls as well.

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They charge you $400 out-of-pocket for an initial consultation which is utterly ridiculous. Took me maybe half an hour to find a psychiatrist online for four times less than that amount. Not to mention the completely unprofessional way they responded to a recent 1-star review.

Review edited; Have confirmed that there is an issue with Penn's call and text system, objectively. It has been deleting my voicemails, and those left by others, too quickly. It is also telling Penn that reminder texts are sent when they're not.To do this, I just had to make a huge stink, show up in person, talk to the office manager, AND file a grievance. The COO at Penn is the one who posted the gaslighty response below, which contains CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION. If you've had issues with contact, it may be because she has been gaslighting patients instead of following through with IT.Also, that commentary about custody had nothing to do with the issue with the nurse practitioner, but now that I've read it, I'm likely filing grievance with the state. That borders on, if not veering directly into, HIPPA violation.Original Review;Really good at first. Now, I'm unable to get calls back when I try to confirm appointments or schedule. They simply don't seem to respond to voice mails. Im also not getting my text notifications, AND I had a nurse try to take my son off of his meds without properly consulting his mother, who is the primary custodial parent.I'm a bit disappointed that things have gotten this bad.

Thank you for your review. We have on record a single voicemail for the number you provided. That voicemail was responded to within 24 hours. Additionally our records show the confirmation text was successfully sent to the number on file. If you have changed your number please let us know immediately. Appointment information is available on your patient portal. If you are having difficulty accessing your portal please leave a message requesting technical assistance and our IT team will return your call. As for the second matter, we were under the impression the issue was resolved. Please note we do not have custody documents on record. If we do not have valid legal custody records on file we are required to act as though there is no agreement and both parents have equal rights. Therefore if you attend an appointment and agree to a plan for your child unless we have documentation on record that indicates another person is required to make that decision we will not know to communicate that with them.

They re not the worst, they re not the best- I ve had some really positive experiences with them, as well as negative ones. But what I really came here to say is this:They really gotta channel all this energy that they ve put into writing super long & personalized responses to reviews, into answering the phone.

Thank you for your review. We have a very high call volume but work to do our best to answer as many phone calls as possible. The fastest way to receive a response is to send a message through our Patient Portal. Also please note if you do not leave a message our system is not set up to keep record of your call and number so that someone may call you back. We do our best to respond in 24 hours, according to our records we have been successful in meeting that response time.

Took 3 months to get an appointment while my Son was psychotic, depressed and self destructive. Seen end of Jan. and is on 2nd Professional already. Now June he is the worst he has EVER been. Psychotic as hell and NOT even on a Psychotic Medication. Keep putting him on drugs that do not work with him. No Social Worker although the site says they do. I am at my wits end. My son needs help and no one cares! ( I am a Nurse and worked psych)
