About Penn Psychiatric Center

Penn Psychiatric Center is an outpatient mental health center in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. They help with a wide range of mental health and behavioral health issues and that includes drug and alcohol addiction. This clinic also has a location in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

Keep in mind that this isn’t necessarily a rehab but more of a counseling center because they help with anything you may need for your mental health. Their primary services are individual counseling and group therapy. They have medication management as well if you can benefit from medications.

There’s a focus on your support system here as well. They have family therapy which helps your family heal from the effects of addiction and come together to grow your recovery. There are peer support groups too so you can develop a peer support system and get the help of being around other people who know and understand your struggle.

You might need to expect some scheduling hiccups here though. Clients at this center so often say that they love their therapist and the care they get but that scheduling is difficult and there are often mishaps with appointment schedules.

outpatient iconOutpatient

Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.

check iconDual Diagnosis

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

mental-health iconMental Health

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

inpatient-file iconCognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

couples-therapy iconCouples Therapy

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

dialectical iconDialectical Behavior Therapy

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

family iconFamily Therapy

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

intervention iconGroup Therapy

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

mental-health iconIndividual Therapy

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

house-medical iconTrauma Therapy

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They re not the worst, they re not the best- I ve had some really positive experiences with them, as well as negative ones. But what I really came here to say is this:They really gotta channel all this energy that they ve put into writing super long & personalized responses to reviews, into answering the phone.

Took 3 months to get an appointment while my Son was psychotic, depressed and self destructive. Seen end of Jan. and is on 2nd Professional already. Now June he is the worst he has EVER been. Psychotic as hell and NOT even on a Psychotic Medication. Keep putting him on drugs that do not work with him. No Social Worker although the site says they do. I am at my wits end. My son needs help and no one cares! ( I am a Nurse and worked psych)

I've had nothing but positive experiences at Penn Psych and at both locations. The front desk staff is always warm and friendly and treats people with dignity and respect. I've worked with both a therapist and medication provider and both have done an amazing job helping me get on track. After having a bad experience at a different facility, I would highly recommend Penn Psych.

All appointments schedule get cancelled, when scheduling it's more than 7 weeks out & then cancelled. Was told intake take over 3 hours. They are not meant to serve mental health community

Response from the owner10 months ago
Hello. We are sorry for the inconvenience and the delay in starting services. We have been working around many clinician absences due to illness over the past 6 weeks. We always try to provide as much notice as possible and we value and respect that this can be frustrating especially for intakes. But it is important to us as an organization to make sure our clinicians are healthy and able to provide the best service possible. As an organization we chose to include all aspects of the initial assessment and paperwork in the first appointment, the intake. We understand this can be lengthy but our objective is to allow for a meeting with a prescriber as soon as possible after your intake. Again we apologize for the inconvenience and the delay in starting services.

They don't cater to a patient wishes .I requested telemed appointments for a treatment plan and they said they can't do it .I leave a half an hour away

Response from the owner1 year ago
Hi Daniel, We do understand and respect your wishes. However, insurance requires multiple documents and forms to be signed during treatment plans. We have issues with individuals completing the appointment but not completing the forms. This documentation requirement puts a large strain on our administrators as they have to send the forms, check and follow up if people do not return the forms. Treatment plans are required by the state and must be completed in full and on time in order to attend any other appointment. As a result we have a process put in place that if you can show that a telehealth appointment is needed, and an in-person appointment is not just an inconvenience, a telehealth tx plan can be approved. A treatment plan is required twice a year, and as you stated you live half an hour away. You have indicated an inconvenience not a need. Although we value your time and understand your wishes we need to make sure we can accommodate individuals who need the service via telehealth. We serve over 1,500 clients and we do not have the resources to provide treatment plans via telehealth to all clients who make the request. You only are scheduled for treatment plans twice a year, all other appointments can be done in whatever manner you wish including telehealth. We hope you can understand and appreciate our position.

I wish I could give negative stars I would. This place is NOT serious about helping people with mental health. They are EXTREMELY unprofessional. They are EXTREMELY rude to people when they drop the ball on something because they cant handle admitting they were wrong They treat clients like they are P.O.S. If you truly need help, DO NOT GO HERE!!!! They do not take mental health serious. It is a joke of a Psychiatric Health Center. 2.8 stars speaks volumes.

Response from the owner1 year ago
We have an attendance policy in place because we need for individuals to be committed and serious about their own mental health as well. We have waitlists and individuals waiting for services, repeated No-Shows and Late Cancellations are not acceptable. These appointments could be given to individuals currently waiting for services and willing to take an active role in their own mental health. Our attendance policy is 3 No Shows or Late Cancellations in 3 months. This is not a single instance or miscommunication. All no shows and late cancellations can be disputed and made excused if you take the time to contact us and let us know if there was an emergency, illness or other acceptable reason your simply did not show. We make calls and send warning letters to remind people of our policy.
