About Peninsula Hospital

Located in Louisville, Tennessee, Peninsula Behavioral Health provides behavioral health care services for children, teenagers, and adults. Operating under Covenant Health Peninsula, they offer age-specific inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, and aftercare services. Dedicated support is available for folks with co-occurring addictions and mental health disorders.

Their inpatient treatment is divided into two units. There’s one for minors and one for adults. In both programs, you’ll have access to acute mental health services and crisis stabilization. A multi-disciplinary team of providers, including nurses, psychiatrists, and counselors, works to develop an individualized treatment plan designed around your needs. If you require more extensive or longer-term residential care, you may be referred to Peninsula Hospital’s Basic Skills Unit. Available inpatient services include medication management, counseling, and addiction education.

Their outpatient treatment is available if you require a less intensive level of care or are ready to transition down from inpatient services. This program helps you better understand and address their condition, identify triggers, and learn healthy coping skills for recovery. Available services include individual, group, and family therapy, case management, peer-based support groups, psychiatric evaluations, medication management, and recovery-focused education. Their aftercare program may include referrals to other departments within Peninsula Hospital, as well as outside providers that can offer additional recovery services.

Peninsula Behavioral Health accepts most commercial insurance plans. They also accept Medicare and military benefits. Speak with your individual provider to confirm your coverage as out of network benefits may vary.

They gave me the tools to help myself the first time. I was able to perform miracles with their help. Mind you I was poor in a way for the following years. They gave up on me for my illness. I sense conflict of interest.. No doctor should have to go through residency to put up with that scenario. Yet doctors do group up in highly opinionated cliques where care can vary due to greed and debt and desires to want families. To secure this the clique or fraternity is formed at the end of the day the patients suffer antithetical of the cause of the doctors creed.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
inpatient iconInpatient
Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.
24-hour icon24-Hour Clinical Care
At certain points in the recovery process, it's important to have support available 24/7. 24-hour clinical care offers a safe environment in which to recover from drug or alcohol addiction in peace, knowing medical detox and other treatment will happen with professionals on hand.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

When your day-to-day life is taken over by drug use, this is known as substance use disorder. If you abruptly stop using your drug of choice, you experience withdrawal symptoms. To overcome this cycle, professional drug rehab in Tennessee is usually needed.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
seniors-program thumbnail image
Seniors Program
Nearly one million adults age 65 and older live with a substance use disorder. Treatment providers who specialize in senior care understand the social, psychological, and physical effects of aging and how they relate to recovery. They can help clients address particular challenges and risks they may face as they get older such as overdosing and medication interactions and dependencies.

Clinical Services

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

While engaged in couples therapy in Tennessee, you'll learn how to trust, communicate, forgive, and manage emotions. Developing these skills can be beneficial at any time during the relationship, but they are particularly crucial when facing life challenges.

Really enjoyed my stay here. The staff were sweet, Shawn S., Darryl, and Bryce in the female wing.Dr. Raman did an amazing job walking me through treatment for depression and anxiety. They had a chaplain on call.Especially enjoyed Tai Chi lessons with Ben F.Thank you Peninsula for putting me on a healthier path mentally. I walked away with great coping skills that i will carry with me for many years to come.

I cannot express to you how great my experience here was. I was in the adolescent unit (I ve heard the adolescent unit is far better than the adult unit unfortunately) and the staff here are incredible!! Everyone was so kind and tried to help as best they could. In another facility, I had a break down and they just sat there and watched me telling me I m not qualified to help you . But At peninsula everyone would do their best to help and make sure we were all comfortable!! I felt like a person and not just a patient! I look back at my time here and have very fond memories. There was an outdoor area with a playground for the littles and a basketball court! There were tables where we did mindfulness activities with a mental health instructor. The day room is huge! Lots of space and lots of activities: coloring, painting, pearler beads, outdoor activities, video games!!, movies, the list goes on. In the adolescent unit, rooms used to be shared but when I was there, they had changed it to where we had our own rooms. Shower pressure was good and water was warm! Unfortunately I cannot say how much of a difference it made because I was still trapped in the cycle of attempts and inpatient facilities. I have run into past patients after discharge and they say that it helped a lot. If anything were to happen again, I this would be my first choice. I love the staff here (especially Grant, he is a very kind soul with a big heart) + they have really good food.I have an amazing experience here!! 10/10 if you are an adolescent, I highly suggest peninsula!!

Interestingly I have no recollection of eating at this place. I was only there for a week but genuinely curious as to how I was fed. No other complaints except I did have to ask several times to be released until I felt panicky I was stuck because I was being moved to the next ward with guys or something. Loved being with the other residents mostly and playing basketball

I'm sure every place has the bad and good. Most of the bad reviews seem like they're from people who didn't want to go there in the first place, which understandably, I get it. However, my daughters experience was very good. They communicated with me every day, Kept me updated on everything going on with her treatment, she said she really liked the staff and the activities. Their therapists and psychiatrists also got to the bottom of what was going on. When 3 months of outpatient therapy was getting us no where. They stabilized her after a crisis, and I feel comfortableknowing she's safe and she feels safe. She is home now, and doing a lot better than before. I can't thank this place enough for their help.

This is my trauma I had experienced in 2007-2008.I was forced to go to NA and AA meetings in what we called the 'white vans' twice a week for a year. Even though I wasn't an alcoholic or an addict, we were forced to read these books in a cult like environment everyday and write in long journal entries of why we were 'wrong' in life, why we were either addicts or alcoholics, why we were not able to cope with reality and how our lives had become 'unmanageable'. These things are triggering to me and are deep rooted within my trauma that I've honestly tried to block out for many years. We were forced to speak at least twice a day for an hour for each of us in a circle. Even if you couldn't think of anything to say they would make you say something, or make up something, or repeat a memory or experience over and over again. If you didn't, they would ridicule and embarrass you or punish you with 'CMs' which were like no desert, or you have to carry 3 huge backpacks for a mile, whilst carrying a huge water gott for a whole month straight, everyday, several times a day. Only having 5 min shower/ brushing teeth/ using the bathroom instead of 15 min. Having to repeat mantras before we line up and walk, like ' I will not do this or I promise I will speak when told to'. If you decided not to do anything, they would restrain you, and depending on the counselor or staff member, it would be VERY aggressive, depending how they felt that day from what I've noticed which sometimes they drug you, and put you in a small locked 5x10 room with a tiny window and depending whether you were drugged they would leave the lights on, if not they would leave the lights off and watch you. I lived in fear and anxiety every day. It makes me physically shake now just talking about it again. But that is only a fraction of what I have been through. There is so much more. That was the longest year of my life. The only escape I had was within my dreams when I slept. When we were told to sleep and wake up everyday. We were always watched, always heard, always what was told to do. We were stripped of all freedoms and humanity. And then forced to do child labor like cutting trees, bushes, crosscut trees with manual saws, and axes. Lift railroad ties to build a POW wow site and then they claim it as 'sacred' every day. Having a soda like coke or something was so rare and everyone acted so crazy like it was the best day in the world. Watching a movie or TV in general too. Many of the 'counselors' were very corrupt and did many bad things to us and we were always looked down upon, like wild animals essentially. Music was also rare. I remember crying hysterically when one of my 'counselors' played one of my favorite songs right before we went to bed. It wasn't even the full song, just a ringtone. He was nice to play it for me a few times. I would have these note cards that I would write out lyrics of my favorite songs that I could remember, and tape them next to my bed and imagine the song being played as I read them every night. Drawing pictures of my old friends bc I wasn't allowed to have pictures, only pre-approved photos that my family sent me.This only scratches the surface of my trauma at Peninsula Village, or as they have renamed it several times...I have been physically, mentally and spiritually abused from this place. The only thing I can do is forgive, but I will NEVER forget. I will always remember all of the faces that I was with while I was there for a year. Staff, Counselors, Therapists, School teachers, Medical practitioners, and especially those that were with me, my friends, the 'troubled teen' patients. We will destroy you, if not in this life, than we will in the next.

My daughter (age 8) was referred here, from the childrens hospital, after a mental health crisis due to a violent episode while on zoloft. The doctor there met her once and immediately wanted to her put on psychotic meds without ever winging her off zoloft to see if that cleared her symptoms. I refused and asked her to be taken off zoloft to see if that helped 1st (after advice from her reg therapist and the therapist at this hospital), which i was then berated for refusing by the doctor. The symptoms were resolving after coming off zoloft, yet the doctor, after the 2nd visit with her, now wanted to put her on mood stabilizers and adhd meds. I consulted her reg therapist again and was told it was reasonable for me to want to wait on medication and give intensive therapy a try 1st. I relayed this to the doctor, that I wanted to try therapy 1st, unless he can tell me what the rush was or her diagnosis. He could not tell me what the rush was or a diagnosis other than "if you want your son dead or the insurance not to cover residential" but she wasn't violent at peninsula nor a immediate danger to my son at this point. Given that her symptoms were no longer present I denied medication again to my 8 year old. Then they called me about a week later saying the symptoms were gone (other than adhd) and that she no longer had thoughts to harm her or her brother and was denied for residential due to this. Therefore she was being discharged from their care. The doctor, after only seeing her a 3rd time, again stating that he still feels she needs medication even though her symptoms are gone and his only reason was because "she used to have those thoughts." He insisted that zoloft could never do this - even against numerous NIH published research articles. As retaliation for refusing the medication for my daughter, he reported me to CPS. According to CPS my daughter is a danger to my son and herself - even though the doctor at peninsula released her. So either the doctors are spiteful or release dangerous people here. Doctors like the ones at peninsula make people not want to seek help for fear of retaliation. If you want an alternative treatment for your kid other than medication then this place I would avoid unless you want CPS called on you.

I was sent here twice as a juvenile/adolescent. I have plenty of horrible stories, but the biggest one that plays back in my head just about anytime I think of this hell hole, is when I was switched rooms without any given reason. Well I get comfortable in my room, & decide to use the restroom. The restroom had a pool of blood from where another adolescent tried/did harm herself. Anyways just wanted to say if you consider sending your child/teenager here you probably need the help more.
