About Palmetto Summerville – Behavioral Health

Palmetto Summerville - Behavioral Health is a residential treatment center for youth ages 7 to 21 who are struggling with behavioral health issues. That includes kids and teens who have drug and alcohol addiction. The facility’s program has relocated from Summerville, South Carolina, to North Charleston, South Carolina.

This program is an inpatient treatment for kids and teenagers who are having severe behavioral health issues and need the structure and 24 hour support of a residential program. There are separate programs for boys and girls.

It’s important to note that while your child’s treatment will be tailored to them, this facility doesn’t specialize in addiction. They use a multi phase behavioral modification system, and they help with a wide range of behavioral health issues. So this could be the right fit if your child’s drug and alcohol use is one factor in a severe overall behavioral issue.

This facility takes a trauma informed care approach to treatment. They use evidence based therapies like dialectical behavior therapy in the course of group therapy and individual therapy. They also have an educational component, so your child won’t fall behind in their academic work. That’s important because this inpatient program could be anywhere from two weeks to six months long.

I was here for 8 months and then a month a few months later. The first time I was there I got into fights and im not violent. Some with staff members who would hit first. Tried to escape multiple times and multiple kids did end up escaping thru the ground under the gate. SA by staff and kids were reported but nothing was done. Riots weren't dealt with properly and kids got severely injured and nothing happened. I tried to escape once and I broke both my feet. I wasn't given medical attention for 3 months. I was forced to try and walk on my broken feet and when I couldn't they would degrade me. Right after the incident. Wasn't allowed shoes to help the pain. I had to crawl for 2 of those months. And got yelled at for it. Kids got ahold of blades from the school building and did serious harm to themselves and got no medical attention. The last time i was there the only thing that had me sent to the short term was the fact that I told the only staff member that cared that I took the pills from the nurses station that was very easy to get into. Staff would give patients illegal drugs because it was the only thing that could keep us sane. Or so they thought. I was SA'd by a roomate and they made me stay in the room with her. I told them too. Their only excuse to why they were so harsh was because "this is a behavioral facility not therapy" when almost every child there wasn't there for behavior, they were there for trying to KTS. Lice and bed bugs, blood and vomit were everywhere. Untreated lice because nobody wanted to deal with it. SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN!!! DEHEC NEEDS TO COME IN ON A DAY THE STAFF ARENT WARNED ABOUT

Other Forms of Payment

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

Residential treatment programs are those that offer housing and meals in addition to substance abuse treatment. Rehab facilities that offer residential treatment allow patients to focus solely on recovery, in an environment totally separate from their lives. Some rehab centers specialize in short-term residential treatment (a few days to a week or two), while others solely provide treatment on a long-term basis (several weeks to months). Some offer both, and tailor treatment to the patient's individual requirements.

Treatments

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Mental health rehabs focus on helping individuals recover from mental illnesses like bipolar disorder, clinical depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, and more. Mental health professionals at these facilities are trained to understand and treat mental health issues, both in individual and group settings.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a modified form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a treatment designed to help people understand and ultimately affect the relationship between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. DBT is often used for individuals who struggle with self-harm behaviors, such as self-mutilation (cutting) and suicidal thoughts, urges, or attempts. It has been proven clinically effective for those who struggle with out-of-control emotions and mental health illnesses like Borderline Personality Disorder.

Experiential therapy is a form of therapy in which clients are encouraged to surface and work through subconscious issues by engaging in real-time experiences. Experiential therapy departs from traditional talk therapy by involving the body, and having clients engage in activities, movements, and physical and emotional expression. This can involve role-play or using props (which can include other people). Experiential therapy can help people process trauma, memories, and emotion quickly, deeply, and in a lasting fashion, leading to substantial and impactful healing.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Nutrition therapy, aka medical nutrition therapy (MNT), is a way of treating physical, emotional, and medical conditions through diet. Specific dietary plans are designed by professional nutritionists or registered dietitians, and patients follow them in order to positively affect their physical and mental health.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

They kept me uncommunicated from my son for about three weeks! Every time I called and asked they told me he wasn't allowed to talk to me until a month in and I called every day until they let me speak to him! So UNPROFESSIONAL!

My 15 year old daughter benefitted greatly from therapy and the staff. Her therapists Joy and Devine and her team reached her and helped her out of her negative self harming habits and gave her inner strength and ability to deal with things in a positive way. Thank you all.By the way for all the haters, you probably did not attend toYour case plans or your work. My daughter did. I have no negative things to say about Palmetto Summerville.

This place needs to be shut down and investigated now!!!!!!! My child has reported so many wrong doings in there. It s nasty. The staff is horrible and rude. When I signed my child out it smelt like an animal shelter. My child said they have roaches along with many other bugs. My child has seen kids get inappropriately touched by staff. Not to mention the staff lied about a lot and my daughter didn t feel comfortable talking to me on the phone bc they wouldn t let her speak freely. I have had problems with the dr trying to put my daughter on meds that she didn t need to be on. My daughter s mental health is worse since going to Palmetto. I only gave them a 1 star bc it made me choose atleast one to leave a review. Palmetto don t comment on this bc I have already spoken to y all s staff, coordinator, managers. I have climbed y all s chain of command. These people need to know the truth about this horrible place!!!!!

DO NOT PUT YOUR CHILD HERE. My daughter was having some mental issues and we were advised to place her here coming out of Lowcountry behavioral health (they were awesome). The people who work here are impossible to get ahold of, they stole my daughter s belongings upon discharge, refuse to give me the last name of their regional director Shannon, the secretary at the front desk answers the phone at her convenience and wouldn t offer me any of the upper managements contact info except for a first name. That is SHADY. As a facility that is supposed to be helping children manage their mental illnesses, they are clueless. My daughter went in there and played their staff like a fiddle. Seems like this place is just in business to offer jobs to people who can t get real mental health jobs. If you work here, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Find a new job because the reviews speak for themselves! Take a look for yourself. They re all saying the same things I said. And to my daughter s case manager, Allison Picco, I don t appreciate your consistent lack of communication. I ve emailed you several times and your lack of caring has been evident since the first day she was put in there. Makes me sick that this is who is helping our children.
