About Oaklawn Psychiatric Center

Oaklawn Psychiatric Center provides a wide range of addiction and mental health services for kids, teens and adults in Elkhart, Indiana. They offer skills training and case management, individual and group therapy and psychiatric services. They also offer youth and adult inpatient treatment as well as intensive residential programs.

You can visit one of their open access clinics to start receiving treatment at this location. These walk-in clinics don’t require appointments or prior phone calls. During the first appointment you’ll complete paperwork, have a clinical assessment with one of their therapists and develop a treatment plan. The procedure requires two to four hours.

Be aware that, although every treatment plan is tailored to your particular requirements, they all follow the group first model of care. This implies that group therapy will be the first setting in which most clients receive care. Peer support groups employ the same evidence based techniques as individual therapy. While some clients may continue in group therapy as their main form of treatment, others may only attend for a few sessions as they get ready for more in depth work in individual therapy.

For young people with moderate to severe drug use disorders, their 28 week New Hope Adolescent program offers intensive drug treatment. Participants gain knowledge about drug abuse, its effects on individuals and families and recovery techniques.

The most common use of their medication assisted treatment is the treatment of opioid use disorders. Research indicates that this approach nearly doubles the success rate of clients, and their team of prescribers and nurses is committed to the cause.

Their mobile opioid response team is available around the clock to assist anyone suffering from an opioid use disorder. Especially in the early stages of recovery, their peer support professionals are a special asset to the treatment team offering unmatched support.

Receiving services from this location is independent of your financial situation. Their access center specialists will assist you, and if you qualify, they might even be able to help you apply for various kinds of coverage. They provide a sliding fee scale as well.

The therapist Barb I saw here (2019) was one of the best I ve been to. She truly empathized with my issues and helped me work through trauma. The classes I went to here for probation (2022) were honestly probably the worst though. As I was having issues staying awake due to medication and depression, it didn t help class was right after my shift at the factory and ran 3 hours long on a work night. I live 30 min away from this location, so it was hard getting here on time as it started right after work (was also dealing with untreated ADHD). I actually ended up getting into a car accident on the way here one time when I was too tired to drive.. I couldn t legally opt out though as they said it d be a mark on my record for refusing treatment . The teachers thought I was being purposely disobedient. They treated me different because of it, often in front of my peers, which made me feel terrible about coming to these classes. One of the teachers was nicer to me than the other though and seemed to understand what I was going through. She recommended I see someone here for psych meds as she said she could tell my ADHD was ruining my life. We were drug tested 3x a week (charged $25/test) so it was very expensive. I ended up finding elsewhere to go to for classes which worked out in the long run. Winter of 2023 i started coming here again, this time for psychiatry. My doctor is Brandy and she is truly a godsend. Very grateful I found a doctor who listens to my concerns, and doesn t make me feel guilty for talking about my feelings and problems I ve had with certain medications in the past. I ve seen her for months and I feel like it s making a difference in my life for the better. She doesn t dismiss me off as a drug addict like previous doctors have, she sees me as a person and that s why I m glad I took a chance on getting help here. :) so I m just writing this review to say it honestly depends on who you re seeing here. Every doctor/therapist is different and some may be a better fit for you personally. Don t let a bad experience turn you away from getting help.

Other Forms of Payment

Private insurance refers to any kind of healthcare coverage that isn't from the state or federal government. This includes individual and family plans offered by an employer or purchased from the Insurance Marketplace. Every plan will have different requirements and out of pocket costs so be sure to get the full details before you start treatment.

Self-pay involves paying for treatment out of your own pocket. You can use savings or credit, get a personal loan, or receive help from family and friends to fund your treatment. If you don't have insurance or your insurance plan doesn't cover a specific program, self-pay can help ensure you still get the care you need.

Financial aid can take many forms. Centers may have grants or scholarships available to clients who meet eligibility requirements. Programs that receive SAMHSA grants may have financial aid available for those who need treatment as well. Grants and scholarships can help you pai for treatment without having to repay.

Sliding scale payments are based on a client's income and family size. The goal is to make treatment affordable to everyone. By taking these factors into account, addiction recovery care providers help ensure that your treatment does not become a financial burden to you or your family, eliminating one barrier to care.

Medicare is a federal program that provides health insurance for those 65 and older. It also serves people under 65 with chronic and disabling health challenges. To use Medicare for addiction treatment you need to find a program that accepts Medicare and is in network with your plan. Out of pocket costs and preauthorization requirements vary, so always check with your provider.

Military members, veterans, and eligible dependents have access to specific insurance programs that help them get the care they need. TRICARE and VA insurance can help you access low cost or no cost addiction and mental health treatment. Programs that accept military insurance often have targeted treatment focused on the unique challenges military members, veterans, and their families face.

Medicaid is a state based program that helps lower-income individuals and families pay for healthcare. Medicaid covers addiction treatment so those enrolled can use their coverage to pay for rehab. When a program accepts Medicaid the client often pays very little or nothing out of their own pocket.

Addiction Treatments

Levels of Care

outpatient iconOutpatient
Outpatient Programs (OP) are for those seeking mental rehab or drug rehab, but who also stay at home every night. The main difference between outpatient treatment (OP) and intensive outpatient treatment (IOP) lies in the amount of hours the patient spends at the facility. Most of the time an outpatient program is designed for someone who has completed an inpatient stay and is looking to continue their growth in recovery. Outpatient is not meant to be the starting point, it is commonly referred to as aftercare.
intensive-outpatient iconIntensive Outpatient
Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are for those who want or need a very structured treatment program but who also wish to live at home and continue with certain responsibilities (such as work or school). IOP substance abuse treatment programs vary in duration and intensity, and certain outpatient rehab centers will offer individualized treatment programs.
aftercare iconAftercare Support
Clients receiving support in a rehab aftercare program have completed inpatient care and may also be preparing to exit formal outpatient care. Outpatient services are typically categorized as rehab aftercare, but these services often continue beyond the cessation of formal treatment. Rehab aftercare services are designed to promote life-long recovery through comprehensive, wraparound care, which may include medical, mental health, and social services. These programs are usually created in collaboration with the client's case manager and care team.
12-step icon12-Step
12-step programs are addiction recovery models based on Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). A number of substance abuse programs (including some drug and alcohol rehab centers) use the 12 steps as a basis for treatment. Beginning steps involve admitting powerlessness over the addiction and creating a spiritual basis for recovery. Middle steps including making direct amends to those who've been hurt by the addiction, and the final step is to assist others in addiction recovery in the same way. 12-Step offshoots including Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), Dual Recovery Anonymous (DRA), Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous (SLAA) and Gamblers Anonymous (GA).
partial-hospitalization iconPartial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program (PHP) can provide intensive rehab on a short-term basis. While PHP treatment typically requires a commute, telehealth may be available. PHP treatment costs can vary but are often covered by most insurance. The program duration can vary to meet your specific needs and require you to meet for a minimum of 20 hours a week for an average of 90 days. PHP Treatment services often include relapse prevention strategies, medication management, individual and group counseling, and other behavioral therapy interventions.
medically-assisted-detox iconMedically Assisted Detox
Drug and alcohol addiction often takes a heavy toll on one's body. Over time, a physical dependence can develop, meaning the body physiologically needs the substance to function. Detox is the process of removing drugs and/or alcohol from the body, a process that can be lethal if mismanaged. Medical detox is done by licensed medical professionals who monitor vital signs and keep you safe, healthy, and as comfortable as possible as you go through detox and withdrawal.

Treatments

The goal of treatment for alcoholism is abstinence. Those with poor social support, poor motivation, or psychiatric disorders tend to relapse within a few years of treatment. For these people, success is measured by longer periods of abstinence, reduced use of alcohol, better health, and improved social functioning. Recovery and Maintenance are usually based on 12 step programs and AA meetings.

For long-term recovery from drug addiction, drug rehab in Indiana is often key. This treatment gives individuals who are struggling with a substance use disorder the tools to manage their disorder and achieve long-term sobriety.

Many of those suffering from addiction also suffer from mental or emotional illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety disorders. Rehab and other substance abuse facilities treating those with a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder administer psychiatric treatment to address the person's mental health issue in addition to drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

A combined mental health and substance abuse rehab has the staff and resources available to handle individuals with both mental health and substance abuse issues. It can be challenging to determine where a specific symptom stems from (a mental health issue or an issue related to substance abuse), so mental health and substance abuse professionals are helpful in detangling symptoms and keeping treatment on track.

Opioid rehabs specialize in supporting those recovering from opioid addiction. They treat those suffering from addiction to illegal opioids like heroin, as well as prescription drugs like oxycodone. These centers typically combine both physical as well as mental and emotional support to help stop addiction. Physical support often includes medical detox and subsequent medical support (including medication), and mental support includes in-depth therapy to address the underlying causes of addiction.

Programs

teen-program thumbnail image
Teen Program
Teen programs are designed to address the unique pressures teens face, pressures that can drive them to experiment with dangerous, addictive substances. They need programs that meet them exactly where they are and give them tools for long-term recovery. Therapy can help teenagers understand and work through underlying issues so they can reclaim the life ahead of them.
adult-program thumbnail image
Adult Program
Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.
program-for-men thumbnail image
Program For Men
Men face specific challenges and concerns when seeking addiction treatment. Gender-specific recovery programs help them tackle these issues head-on in an environment that's focused, targeted, and distraction-free. It also gives them the opportunity to connect with and learn from other men who have been through a similar journey and can offer support for the next step.
program-for-women thumbnail image
Program For Women
Rehabs for women provide a safe, nurturing space for female clients to heal. These treatment programs consider the specific obstacles that women can face during recovery and place a special emphasis on mental, social, physical, and reproductive health. They explore how each woman's experience has shaped the trajectory of their substance use, addressing issues such as sexual abuse and past trauma.
young-adult-program thumbnail image
Young Adult Program
Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
child-program thumbnail image
Child Program
The providers who specialize in the children's rehab space understand the specialized needs that this population faces. School-based and social services such as tutoring and family counseling are often central to treatment. Child programs may also address the needs of youth experiencing substance abuse in the home, including a parent's or sibling's addiction.
hearing-impaired-program thumbnail image
Hearing Impaired Program
A sensory disability, such as hearing impairment, can compound the challenges of addiction recovery. Drug rehabs that are specially designed to accommodate the needs of persons with hearing impairments will include special accessibility features and accommodations to make treatment as comfortable and effective as possible. This may include access to American Sign Language interpreters.

Clinical Services

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a therapy modality that focuses on the relationship between one's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is used to establish and allow for healthy responses to thoughts and feelings (instead of unhealthy responses, like using drugs or alcohol). CBT has been proven effective for recovering addicts of all kinds, and is used to strengthen a patient's own self-awareness and ability to self-regulate. CBT allows individuals to monitor their own emotional state, become more adept at communicating with others, and manage stress without needing to engage in substance abuse.

Group therapy is any therapeutic work that happens in a group (not one-on-one). There are a number of different group therapy modalities, including support groups, experiential therapy, psycho-education, and more. Group therapy involves treatment as well as processing interaction between group members.

In individual therapy, a patient meets one-on-one with a trained psychologist or counselor. Therapy is a pivotal part of effective substance abuse treatment, as it often covers root causes of addiction, including challenges faced by the patient in their social, family, and work/school life.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a clinical approach to helping people with substance abuse issues and other conditions shift behavior in positive ways. It is more goal-oriented than traditional psychotherapy, as MI counselors directly attempt to get clients to consider making behavioral change (rather than wait for them to come to conclusions themselves). Its primary purpose is to resolve ambivalence and help clients become able to make healthy choices freely.

Trauma therapy addresses traumatic incidents from a client's past that are likely affecting their present-day experience. Trauma is often one of the primary triggers and potential causes of addiction, and can stem from child sexual abuse, domestic violence, having a parent with a mental illness, losing one or both parents at a young age, teenage or adult sexual assault, or any number of other factors. The purpose of trauma therapy is to allow a patient to process trauma and move through and past it, with the help of trained and compassionate mental health professionals.

Whether a marriage or other committed relationship, an intimate partnership is one of the most important aspects of a person's life. Drug and alcohol addiction affects both members of a couple in deep and meaningful ways, as does rehab and recovery. Couples therapy and other couples-focused treatment programs are significant parts of exploring triggers of addiction, as well as learning how to build healthy patterns to support ongoing sobriety.

Research clearly demonstrates that recovery is far more successful and sustainable when loved ones like family members participate in rehab and substance abuse treatment. Genetic factors may be at play when it comes to drug and alcohol addiction, as well as mental health issues. Family dynamics often play a critical role in addiction triggers, and if properly educated, family members can be a strong source of support when it comes to rehabilitation.

I liked going here, I found some caring people that helped me a lot. Nevertheless, I think they could improve their way of giving treatment.

I attempted suicide in mid August of 2023. I went to Oaklawn for an initial assessment at the start of September 2023. I was told I had to attend a 12 week support group before receiving individual therapy. It s now the end of January 2024. I ve been calling every week and can t get a call back. It shouldn t take 6 months to get into a support group! It s now the middle of March and I finally got into a support group. It actually took 6 months. The support group takes 3 months, then I might be able to start receiving one on one therapy. 3 weeks into the group, and it s being combined with another therapy group. I am so frustrated with Oaklawn!

I only stay here because Dr. Kramer if not for him I d be gone. A couple years ago I had counseling quickly racked up a $1,000 balance because every time I checked in no had the courtesy to let me know insurance wasn t covering the provider/counselor I was seeing/ talking to. When I met with McKenna she never apologized . nothing. I work in health care we would never let someone s balance get that high with out letting them know talk about making someone more depressed when it s a psychiatric center it s crazy

I would recommend no one to go to this place or any other Oaklawn facility for that matter. On multiple occasions I've been lied to, misinformed, and denied information that is considered crucial to me. Not only has it taken more than 7 months on a waiting list for a counselor they said would contact me within 30 days for individual counseling, still wondering if I'll ever get that call but probably not. Another incident happened recently though where I was asked to take a drug/alcohol screening for corresponding classes in accordance to other matters. Anyways, I take ADHD medication daily, and they called and send I failed for Methamphetamine and they ran it multiple times in their lab and know it has to be that. However, when I asked them further questions they had no logical answers and were unable to provide me with adequate documentation. The lady, Carol, even went as far to say I was a liar and said she'll help me once I start being honest with her. This place is a joke, and no one in a psychiatric crisis or seeking any other form of mental health or substance abuse issued should never go here it'll just make it that much worse for you. STAY CLEAR OF ANY OAKLAWN, THEY ARE FRAUDS WHO ARE PREYING ON PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES JUST FOR A DOLLAR IN THEIR POCKETS.

Terrible. I was forced here. I received NO therapy, was forced to be part of "social circles" because it would 'get me out earlier.Wasn't allowed outside a single time in the week I was there. Forced to spend group time with patients that are suffering from far worse mental health issues. If anything, this place traumatic. Do not go here. Do not send anyone you love here. Get them REAL therapy instead.

For a health care facility they have horrible Covid prevention. People walking around with no masks or wearing them around their necks. Why bother?
